Ann, I tried to help but got confused. Is it Jordan Sherrod or Jordan Brantley?? Also, I tried both on my Confederate CD and did not find a soldier by either name. Traci the Librarian _________________________________________ From: "Douglas, Ann" <andouglas@davidson.edu> To: NCEDGECO-L@rootsweb.com Sherrod is a frequently used surname in the Brantley family also. Sherwood/Sherrod Brantley had a son named Jordan for whom we have no information. Recently while looking at the North Carolina troops rosters from the Civil War, I found a Jordan Sherrod. It's a long shot but I'm hoping that someone may have some information on Jordan Sherrod. Linda, Try getting Bella's death certificate, if you haven't already. On the 1860 Halifax census, there are three Brantleys. Two are in their 60's and 70's; the other is a G.F. Brantley, male, age 33. He was an engineer and his birthplace is listed as Halifax, N.C. In my Halifax marriage book, a Benjamin F. Brantley married a Sarah Gammon Oct. 30, 1860. (That's the only Brantley marriage listed that might have resulted in a child in 1868.) Not much, but I hope it helps in some way. Bella was born 1868 in Haifax Co, died 1930 Edgcombe Co, married 1888. >Also researching Savage and Sherrod in Edgcombe Co. > >Thanks >Linda Anderson Audrey, Your Savages are extremely confusing! This is what I picked out of my Edgecombe County books. 1.) No James Savages on the 1800 census. 2.) There's one on the 1810. 3.) None in 1820 and 1830. 4.) One on the 1840 census, living beside William Savage. William is btw. 40 and 50 years old, James is btw. 30-40 and so is his maybe wife. 5.) No James on the 1850 census (as head of household, anyway.) 6.) James H. Savage m. Catherine Barfield in 1834. 7.) James Savage m. Fanney (Frances?); proven by a deed dated 1829. 8.) James Savage m. Charlotte Smith of Halifax Co.; proven by deed dated 1839. 9.) James D. Savage m. Phereba Lawrence, 1844. 10.) James D. Savage m. Jane F. Johnston, 1853 * There are DEFINTELY two Jameses alive at the same time, and it looks like possibly more. 11.) A James died in Edgecombe in 1834 and left a will that basically left most everything to his sons-in-law and one youngest dau., Emmy Savage. Those are the only people mentioned. A James H. Savage was a witness. According to his obituary in the newspaper, he died Oct. 9, 1834 and was around 65 to 70 years old (putting his birth date in the 1760's.) A Frances Savage died around 1845 and left a will in Edgecombe, naming a bunch of kids (but no James), including an Emma Eliza Savage. Educated guessing: The old man is probably the James who married Fanny, nickname for Frances, who is probably the Frances who left the will. The James H. could be an older son, and could be the one who married Catherine. Anyway, it seems anyone named James liked to travel around. Hope this opens some clues!
