    1. [NCEDGECO] Robert Coleman, d. 1806 or 07, Edgecombe County NC
    2. Wes Coleman (h)
    3. List, In fitting together the information in wills of Colemans in Edgecombe County (that Northern portion that became Halifax County), I have one will for Robert Coleman, Sr. that does not fit well with the rest. The rest are, I believe, descended from Robert Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia who first was deeded land in 1684 and is in the Quit Rent Roll of 1704 for Nansemond County with 1400 acres of land. But this one misfit in Edgecombe County could be from the Robert Coleman line from Amelia County Virginia. This single will shows this line: Robert Coleman, Sr. will dated Nov 13, 1806, probated in May Court of 1807, Deed Book D, p. 276. wife Mary received 2 negro girls, 20 acres of land including houses Robert had two sons listed: Charles and Robert. Charles Coleman, son of R.C., Sr. had three sons: Willie Coleman Allen Coleman Robert Coleman Robert Coleman, Jr. son of R.C., Sr. had two sons: Charles Coleman John Coleman I believe that this pair, R.C., Sr. and R.C., Jr. were probably that pair mentioned in a deed recorded in the Edgecombe County Deedbook #11, page 373, dated 1 Feb 1805, recorded in Feb Court in 1805, wherein Dempsey Barnes of Edgecombe County granted to Robert Coleman, (Sr), also of Edgecombe County for the sum of 10 pounds, a tract of land beginning at a pine in John Daws corner then running east to a water oak in a branch then north up said branch to a poplar then west to a pine in Robert Coleman's (Jr) line then south to the beginning, containing 20 acres, signed Dempsey Barnes (+), witnesses: J. Farmer, William White. (Source: Family History Center film no: 0018889 as reported in an email from Tommy Colbert, Mar. 30, 2001.) I have puzzled over the lineage of the Amelia County Colemans for a while, as it was laid out by J. P. Coleman in his book published in 1965 entitled "The Robert Coleman Family from Virginia to Texas, 1652 - 1965". I see on pages 50-52 of his work that he believes the Robert Coleman of Halifax County who relocated to Fairfield County, SC was in fact connected with the Colemans from Amelia County Virginia, who are known to have settled in Union County, SC; a neighboring county of Fairfield County. While I see no proof of this anywhere and discount it as flimsy speculation, neither can I disprove it yet. As I have pieced together from many helpful folks and sources, there would appear to be four Robert Colemans in a line from the Nansemond County Robert Coleman to his great grandson Robert Coleman. I know that another great grandson, a brother of this Robert Coleman, Kader (or Cadar) Coleman was one of the first, indeed may be the earliest known Coleman in Fairfield County, SC. So, the questions are: 1. What else is known of the above family of Robert Coleman, Sr. and Jr.? 2. Who was R.C., Sr - Where was he from, who were his parents, where exactly in Edgecombe (Halifax?) did he live? 3. Who were the offspring from R.C., Sr. in addition to those listed in his will (and given above) - what were their names, where did they live, whom did they marry, and where did they raise their families? 4. What connections if any exist between this R.C., Sr. and the Colemans of Amelia County and/or Nansemond County Virginia? It appears to me that any common ancestor for Robert Coleman of Amelia County Virginia and Robert Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia, if such exists, would be found back in Great Britain, probably/possibly in Wales. Any connection, even by marriage, is undocumented so far as I know prior to members of both lines reaching South Carolina (J.P. records such a marriage connection, pp. 374 - 5). The Edgecombe County Colemans who I beleive, based on wills of Edgecombe County NC, were among the Nansemond County Coleman line are given online at: http://freeweb.pdq.net/wcoleman/cole1684.htm Wes Coleman COLEMAN GENEALOGY - Wes Coleman's Genealogy Page http://freeweb.pdq.net/wcoleman/genealogy.htm
