Bev, I looked for any Josiah Cook in my Edgecombe stuff and found absolutely none except for that one estate record in 1788. But, what I have is just an abstract; you might want to get hold of the original and see if it will give you any more information. It's very strange; I didn't find any deeds or anything for him, like he dropped from the sky. Maybe that alien theory of genealogy applies to this case... One, he is about 35 when he married the widow Martha Dickinson. Two, Martha Dickinson was also born in North Carolina. She also had two other sons. In the 1840 census she his show with 2 males under 5 and 1 male 5 - 10. Josiah and Martha have two children, Robert born 1847 and James Wesley born 1850. Martha dies between 1850 and 1868. Josiah Cook marries Jane Stribling in 1868. Jane is a widow with at least two sons: William Stribling born 1860 and Benjamin F. Stribling born 1862.
