Betty, There are two revealing mentions of Guilford Parker in the book Kinfolks of Edgecombe County, N.C., 1788-1855: "Deed Book 24-149 Division of the real estate of ISSAC FARMER, dec'd. among the legal representatives, to wit: 1.) JONAH FARMER; 2.) JAMES HORN in right of JOHN W. FARMER; 3.) WILLIAM FARMER in right of GUILFORD PARKER and wife, AGGY; 4.) MARTHA FARMER; 5.) JAMES HORN in right of SIAR O. DAWS (his life estate); 6.) CATHERINE FARMER, March 16, 1846." "Deed Book 22-114 LANCASTER PARKER and GUILFORD R. PARKER sold land jointly, Nov. 3, 1837." A Lancaster Parker is also in Nash County Deed Book #14, p. 395, mentioned in the land division of Jesse Barnes (which said one tract of land was in Nash and two in Edgecombe) as living near Toisnot Swamp (which is now in Wilson County), 1844/45. Guilford is indeed in my Edgecombe marriage book, in the section of surviving marriage bonds, as being married to Priscilla Farmer on Feb. 27, 1833. However, in the section entitled "Edgecombe County Marriages As Proved by Bibles, Wills, and Deeds, From the Files of Hugh B. Johnston, Jr., Historian-Genealogist," is this: "Jordan, Joshua and Agnes Farmer, dau. of Isaac Farmer, Jr., before 1810" "Parker, Guilford and Aggy Farmer, dau. of Isaac Farmer, before 1846" (most likely proved by the deed mentioned in the Kinfolks book.) The wills left by Farmers don't help much; both an Isaac Farmer (d. ca. 1805) and a Samuel Farmer (d. ca. 1817) mention sons named Isaac but no daughters named Priscilla or Aggy/Agness. Isaac Farmer Sr. mentions in his will (written ca. 1800) that his wife was currently pregnant. The Parker wills don't mention any of the people in question. However, in Estate Records of Edgecombe County, N.C., 1730-1820, there are no mentions of Guilford but a few of Aggy and Lancaster: "ISAAC FARMER inventory taken by Asahel Farmer, exr., Jan. 24, 1805, May Ct. 1805. Isaac Farmer, Asahel Farmer, Josiah Farmer, Jesse Farmer, Elizabeth Farmer, Zilpah Farmer, and Enos Farmer were buyers...account of sale of property of Elizabeth Farmer before she married her husband, Isaac Farmer, held April 4, 1805...Division of negroes among the thirteen heirs of said dec'd., viz, Asahel Farmer, John Farmer, Isaiah Farmer, Keziah Farmer, Agness Farmer, Barsheba Farmer, Martha Farmer, Elizabeth Farmer, Sally Farmer, Christian Farmer, Milicent Farmer, and Patience Farmer, only twelve being named." "SIMON PARKER inventory taken by Joseph Barnes, admr., Aug. 15, 1816. A year's provisions were set aside for the widow...account of sale by the admr., March 19, 1816. Elizabeth Parker was the principal buyer and Ishum Parker and Lancaster Parker bought, Aug. Ct. 1816." Census records: There is no Guilford nor Lancaster on the Edgecombe 1840 census. There is, however, a Lancaster on the 1840 Nash County census, page 062, which unfortunately I don't have (I got that reference off the Ancestry.com index.) Lancaster is on the 1830 Edgecombe census, and has one male 10-15 years; one male 20-30 years; one male 50-60 years; one female 5-10 years; one female 10-15 years; and one female 50-60 years. There is also a William Parker on the same census. He had 2 males under 5 years old; two males 5-10 years; one male 50-60 years; and one female 30-40 years. Going back to the 1820 census, Lancaster has one male in every category except over 45 years old. He had three females under 10, one 10-16, and one 26 to 45. Lancaster and William are both also on the 1810 census, but going back to the 1800, only five Parkers are listed: Jonas, Kedar, Peter, Weeks, and a William, which appears to be a different one age-wise. Based on the above figures, Lancaster should have been born around 1770 or 1780, making him 20-30 in 1800; I tried looking at each Parker in 1800 to see who had someone that age, but the ages are so arbitrary, it didn't help much. Curiously enough, I did not find a Simon Parker in 1790, 1800, nor 1810. Conclusions I feel comfortable drawing: 1.) Lancaster was probably Guilford's father, but proof would be nice. 2.) Guilford probably left N.C. after selling that land in 1837; Lancaster may have stayed behind in Nash County (although I could not find a will nor an estate record for him; if you could look at the 1840 census, it might give clues.) 3.) Guilford may have married Priscilla and then Aggy/Agness later; Agness may have been a relative of Priscilla; or Priscilla and Aggy may be the same person. (Although I'd doubt it, as Aggy is consistently referred to as either Aggy or Agness.) 4.) Isaac Farmer is probably Aggy's father. By the way, I didn't see a Redding Parker in any of the sources I checked. I also could not find a marriage record for Lancaster. Hope this helps! Guilford was on the 1850 Sumter Co., AL census, but Priscilla was not listed. Guilford died about 1851 in AL. Living next door in 1850 was William Parker 29 (or 20) b. NC and Sarah Parker 80 b. NC. Was this Guilford's brother and mother? The age for William could possibly be 20 instead of 29. It was difficult to read. If that was the case he must be Guilford's son, not brother. I have found notes in a family Bible, that said Guilford Parker's son John Gray m. Martha Ann Joyner his first cousin and that Martha Ann "spoke of her grandmother Sally Parker". The notes stated that Martha Ann Joyner's mother was Mary "Polly" Ann Parker d/o Redding Parker. The logical assumption here would be that Redding Parker and wife Sally were the parents of both Mary "Polly" Ann Parker and Guilford Parker. Oren Joyner (Joiner), father of Martha Ann also was from Edgecombe Co., and was on the census of 1850 Sumter Co., AL. Does anyone have information on these families? We would like to have more information on them, about their Edgecombe connections, parents, siblings, etc. Betty Ramsey _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
