    1. Re: [NCEDGECO] Barnes, James Herbert - Nash or Edgecomb Co.
    2. Marleen Sue Van Horne
    3. Karen, I know nothing about James Herbert Barnes. My ggg-grandmother was Elizabeth Barnes form Edgecomb County, she died about 1870. However, if your James is from the same family you should be a ble to link back to Dempsey Barnes who florished in the county in the 1750's. Try census records and the published wills for Edgecomb County. Marleen Van Horne

    1. [NCEDGECO] Barnes, James Herbert - Nash or Edgecomb Co.
    2. Hi Listers: I am new to this list and I am writing because I am helping a friend with research on his Barnes family. Right now all I have are the names Roy Russell Barnes (b. about 1920??) and James Herbert Barnes, Sr. (B. about 1900??) Birth dates are just a guess. Do these Barnes names sound familiar to anyone that could assist in this family ancestry? Thanks! Karen

    2. Carl, Here are the websites you might want to check out, they will have links to others NCNASH-L@rootsweb.com NCEDGECO-L@rootsweb.com wilsonnc@egroups.com Hope you hear from the girl about Sid Denton. She may have info to fill in some places for you. Had a message from my aunt when we got home, she had fallen this week and has a compression fracture in her back. I took her my brace from my back problems. The emergency doctor had told her nothing was wrong and sent her home. She was in such pain that yesterday she called one of the lawyers she works for whose husband is a doctor to see if he would look at her xrays, he called back that it was fractured. He called her doctor and she got some pain pills but I told her I would drive her to the doctor, where ever. Just don't want it to get worse. Take care, Judy

    1. [NCEDGECO] Fwd: African American Lancaster Family in Edgecombe County area
    2. Traci Thompson
    3. Edgecombe List People, I am forwarding this to the list in hopes some of y'all can help Ms. Lancaster. Anyone ever heard of this family? Unlike book lookups, I cannot do lookups in the 1900-1920 census because of the time involved (they are not transcribed.) So can anyone out there with time and access help her? Thank you! (Oh, and I have also searched the social security death index, just in case the man had a SS#, and came up with one hit that might help.) Traci the Librarian >I am trying to help somebody locate the burial place, death date and perhaps some descendants of a Matthew Lancaster, a black man who was born around 1900 on the Lancaster Farm in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Matthew had a younger brother named Mark and possibly a son named Peter and a wife named Ida. He may have worked for the Atlantic Coast Line railroad. Could somebody check the census records for 1900, 1910 and 1920. The man who is asking is named Turner A. Wiggins. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Deborah A. 1. [NCEDGECO] Daffin
    2. Traci Thompson
    3. Idalyn, I'm almost positive I've already looked this one up, but I could be confused, so here it is again: The only Daffin is Sarah Daffin, listed in Bertie County in 1788. There are two bondsmen listed, David Edwards and Titus Edwards. No Daughfins. Hope this helps! 3. Jane, I assume you mean in the land grant books? There are no Peter Andersons, but there are records mentioning Stephen Wells. In 1761 Stephen Wells was a sworn chain carrier for Samuel Eason in Edgecombe County. "Stephen Wells 20 June 1749 400 acres in Edgecombe County on the north side of Tarr River, joining the mouth of a Great Branch, the N. Prong of a Great Branch, and the sd. river." (The original has his signature on it.) "Stephen Wells 26 November 1761 595 acres in Edgecombe County on Tar River, joining the mouth and side of Wild Cat Branch, Benjamin Flowers, Whitleys line, Wells corner, and the sd. river" (original has his signature on it.) "Stephen Wells 20 June 1749 406 acres in Edgecombe County on the N. side of Tar River, joining Wells corner, the mouth of a Great Branch, the N. prong of a Great Branch, Benjamin Flowers, and the sd. river." "Stephen Wells 2 March 1761 145 acres in Edgecombe County in the Parish of St. Mary, joining William Eason, Sapony Creek, Arthur Allen, and Daniel Pridgen." (the sworn chain carrier was Stephen Wells, Jr.) Hope this helps, Traci >Traci, Could you please look up Stephen Wells and Peter Anderson for >me ? I would be most appreciative. 1. [NCEDGECO] Whitehead - newspaper
    2. Victoria
    3. While looking through some newspaper extracts from the Marion County, SC area, I noticed a few entries which may be of interest to our group. Newspaper articles can be such a wonderful resource for discovering just where those migrating kinfolk went. Here's one which does not reference Edgecombe County directly but I'm including it since the WHITEHEAD surname has such strong connections to Edgecombe. I know that a number of my ancestors migrated from Edgecombe to South Carolina and beyond; perhaps yours did too. WHITEHEAD entries: from "The Marion Star", 2 March 1858 issue "Mrs. Ann WHITEHEAD, wife of Rev. Hugh Whitehead, died in Coffee Co., Ala., on the 23rd December last, in the 32nd year of her age. She was born in South Carolina, Marion District, 26 Sept 1826 and emigrated to Alabama about a year ago." There's only the one Whitehead entry; it's not a common surname for the area. Happy Holidays, Victoria
