Hi Traci, Thanks for all your help! "I'm looking at that page in the census, and boy, I can see why you can't read it! The first names are pretty easy, but the surname had me stumped for awhile. I could say with 99% certainty it wasn't Hill, because there's definitely about 5 letters in that name, and one is a definite "g." I scrolled back a little until I found someone with the same last name, and you can tell better from that family that it is most probably "Knight." ---Someone sent me the transcription of the whole page. Thanks. But wait a minute...who was the other Knight family? Were they Black? ---One again, thank you for being so helpful. And thanks for contacting Minnie Jo for me. ---Karmella __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! Personals. http://personals.yahoo.com
Karmella Glad you wrote. I just abstracted a deed tonight that might interest you. Tommy Edge. Co. db 21, page 382, date of deed 22 Dec. 1835, date recorded Feb. Ct. 1836, Sally Knight, Edge. Co. to David Barlow, Edge. Co. "doth give unto the said David Barlow" all my right and title to three negroes viz. Nancy and her two children, Margaret and Caleb, signed Sally Knight, wit. Wilson Sessoms.
Greetings list, I discovered something peculiar. Earlier I had requested the abstract of the will of Peter Knight (1809) for the names of his children. I was hoping to get more info. on his slaves. One kind member of this list sent me a transcribed abstract, but the "negroes" were unnamed. I was shuffling through my papers and found some copied pages from will abstract book 1793-1823. I had forgotten I had this. I found the abstract of Peter Knight's will and it DOES name his slaves. Are there two different abstracts or is someone being "shy" with the slave info.? ---Karmella __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! Sorry about the confusion...here's a better link to include webpages. http://c.webring.com/hub?ring=easternnorthcaro Dawn Conner-Jeppesen http://www.geocities.com/frwhlngrl/
Hello all, I am writing to the list to let you know that Yahoo has changed their webrings. My homepage has been listed with them so in order to keep my site active, I had to transfer to their new process. While looking, I noticed under genealogy, they had no sites listed for NC. I decided to create a webring for just this purpose. I am supposed to maintain this webring. I have never done this so please help me if you think there is something I should know. I invite everyone to list their sites with this webring for more explosure and hopefully more genealogy results. You can list your site by going to the following URL... http://c.webring.com/membercgi?ring=easternnorthcaro&addsite I have listed this as genealogy in Eastern NC and Southeastern VA. Thanks so much, Dawn Conner-Jeppesen http://www.geocities.com/frwhlngrl/
Hi Dawn! When I clicked on the URL in your message, it couldn't find the site. I do have a page to add, it is about Isle of Wight County in Virginia, which you included as southest VA. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/%7Eeyoung/isle_wight.html Thanks, Elaine

>Does anyone have the slave schedules for Edgecombe >Co., 1850 and 1840? >I need a look-up for Willis Knight. (total # of >slaves, male and female, each year) I'll get back to you on the 1840 question. Willis is not on the 1850 census because he died in 1845/46. His will abstract follows, transcribed & abstracted by David Gammon: "WILLIS KNIGHT 22 July 1845 May Ct. 1846 Wife POLLY KNIGHT - lend beds, horses, chairs, tables, crockery, etc., also the dower which fell to her by the death of her former husband JESSE KNIGHT in the tracts of land I bought of SILAS WILKERSON and LEWIS KNIGHT, also lend her the land I bought of PETER KNIGHT called the ANDERSON and WREN tracts adjoining same, also lend her $400 and Negroes ANNA and GEORGE. At my wife's death, the $400 shall be divided between REBECCA BROWN, PATSEY BROWN, POLLY BROWN and LIDDIA ANN BROWN(daughters of LITTLE BERRY BROWN). All other property loaned my wife is to be sold at her death and proceeds divided between JORDAN KNIGHT, WILLIAM KNIGHT, JOHN KNIGHT, and HARRIET LITTLE. Son JORDAN KNIGHT - all the land where he now lives. Son WILLIAM KNIGHT - tract where he now lives, and another tract I bought of MICHAEL HEARN adjoining same and RANDOLPH COTTON, also one-fourth part of the Light tract deeded to myself and JOSEPH R. LLOYD by MICHAEL HEARN, also a tract I bought of ASA BROWN and wife and JOHN BUNTIN and wife, also Negro DREW. Son JOHN KNIGHT - land I bought of PETER KNIGHT after my wife's death, also the land I bought of SILAS WILKERSON except for my wife's dower, also another tract I bought of LEWIS KNIGHT except my wife's dower, also one-fourth part of the Light tract. Daughter NANCY MAYO (now living in Mississippi) - Negro CARRY and her child BETTY, also $600 plus all Negroes already received. Daughter NANCY - life estate in Negroes CHERRY and her three children ARON, CELIA, and JAMES, with reversion to the children of NANCY at her death. Daughter HARRIET LITTLE - Negroes SANDY, MARY, and JOSHUA already in her possession. Other property to be sold and proceeds divided between my sons JORDAN, WILLIAM, AND daughter HARRIET. Ex. - sons WILLIAM and JOHN Wit. - WILLIAM C. LEIGH, JESSE W. LEIGH" Traci "Local history is not just local history but human history, world history. Karmella, >It is interesting that Willis didn't >receive any slaves from his father. He may have given him some previously. >I have been having trouble figuring out who this >Walker Knight is. According to Walker's will abstract, >his wife's name was Elizabeth. So is the Elizabeth in >Peter's will a daughter in law, or his daughter? One guess would be she was his daughter and she married another Knight. This would not be unusual. There probably was, however, more than one Elizabeth Knight in Edgecombe at the time. >I would like the 1800 information if anyone has it. Elaine Peter Knight does not appear in my 1800 Edgecombe census nor in the statewide index (at least under the conventional surname spelling.) Either he was missed, was out of state, or was living in someone else's household. Traci the Librarian "Local history is not just local history but human history, world history. Now THAT certainly clears up a lot. Are you sure Walker's wife and Peter's daughter were the same person? Greetings List, Everyone has been extremely helpful thus far. Thank you! I need a little assistance in interpreting a census page (copy) I received: 1880 Edgecombe Co., Upper Fishing Creek Township, town of Whitakers, pg 137C. I am having trouble reading the names in household #118 from the copy I have. Could someone who has quick access to this census transcribe the 7 names for me? The surname looks like "Hill" but I am not sure. Also, I noticed on my 1905 Edgecombe map that there is a colored Baptist church and a colored school near (right outside of) Whitakers. Is there any way I could get more information on these? Thanks, ---Karmella __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! Correction! I would like a look-up for Peter Knight's family a little earlier than that. Is there a 1790 census? Thanks, ---Karmella > Is there an 1800 census for Edgecombe Co.? Hi Sandy, Thank you so much for the will abstract! It is unfortunate he didn't name the slaves, but I do have a second shot. I saw an estate record for Peter in the estate abstracts pages I have. Maybe the slaves names are given there. It is interesting that Willis didn't receive any slaves from his father. > Dau: ELIZABETH > KNIGHT, negro. WALKER > KNIGHT'S 5 youngest chil: JAMES, MARTHA, SISLEY, > JOHN and CHARLES KNIGHT, 25 > Pounds each. Wit: DAVID LAWRENCE, JAMES WEEKS" I have been having trouble figuring out who this Walker Knight is. According to Walker's will abstract, his wife's name was Elizabeth. So is the Elizabeth in Peter's will a daughter in law, or his daughter? Is there an 1800 census for Edgecombe Co.? If so, could someone look up Peter Knight and family for me? I know he was in Edgecombe then...his oldest children were born in Edgecombe. Thanks, ---Karmella __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo!
