I am looking for info on Joseph SIMS/SIMMS who died in 1795 in Edgecombe Co., NC. He married Charity Barnes. I can only find one son, William. He married Edith (Ede) Horn, sister of William Horn. William (1760-1827) had children by another wife, not Ede, because he died only one year after they married. His children were Jesse, William Thomas, Polly (Mary), Sara, Leroy, Jacob, Charity, and Patience. Thanks for any help. I need children's dates, marriages, William's siblings, anything at all. Sue Simms Hill

Since this list has been so quiet, I thought I'd post a little something! My Edgecombe Co. ancestors are of African-American descent, and as yet I have been unable to break the Civil War barrier (possibly because my ancestors may have been enslaved before then). Among my earliest known ancestors in Edgecombe Co. are my g-g-gp, Sandy KNIGHT (born about 1843) and Eliza KNIGHT (born about 1845) (KNIGHT appears to have been her maiden name as well). The earliest record I have of them is their marriage on 11 Jan 1867 in Edgecombe Co., NC. They do not appear in the 1860 census of Edgecombe Co. It is said among my relatives that this couple had 22 children, although I have only been able to identify 16 of them through census records of 1870 and later. (If you are interested in their names, let me know!). One of their sons, Cornelius KNIGHT (my g-gf, b. 28 Feb 1872, d. 27 Nov 1951), married Lizzie WATSON (b. 06 Apr 1880, d. 8 Feb 1953) in about 1897. Lizzie WATSON's parents (and another set of my g-g-gp) were David WATSON (born about 1852) and Celia (Celie?) KILLEBREW (born about 1854). The earliest record I have of them is the 1880 Census of Edgecombe Co., Lower Conetoe Twp. I could not find them in the 1870 Edgecombe Co. census. If anyone out there has any information on these KNIGHTs or WATSONs (or possible relations), please write! Thanks, Karen
Is anyone researching the Pitt family from Edgecombe County? Looking for Cora R. Pitt, daughter of Dr. Franklin Pitt. Cora was born in Edgecombe County around 1860 and went to the Wilson Collegiate School in Wilson, North Carolina around 1870. She and her mother Susan Pitt were living with Cora's sister and her husband, Nora and Samuel Jenkins in 1880 in the Conetoe area of Edgecombe County? Jo
Are any Duval's buried in Edgecombe County (or the surrounding counties to the south-Pitt, Greene, Lenoir, Beaufort, Craven) or do they appear on any county records there? The time period would be about 1810 to 1824 or thereabouts. There is one book that says William Duval moved to Tarsboro in 1810 and another book that says his son Francis moved there and nothing more is known of this family line. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, William
Regarding the STRINGER family, and John Jr. specifically, said to have been born in Edgecombe in 1714. The history is important in having a clear understanding of where a person might have lived, legally, in a given year. For instance, as early as 1722, there were only two counties in North Carolina: Albemarle and Bath. In 1739 all "precincts" were designated "counties." In 1741, Edgecombe and Northampton became counties, the areas taken from Bertie County. Then, in 1746, Granville took its area from Edgecombe. The records of those precincts and counties, as well as North Carolina Higher Court records, must be considered and checked for possible family records during those early years. Donald M. Hello; I'm researching my mother's line, STRINGER, originally from Elizabeth City County, VA. John Stringer moved to Edgecombe County in the early 1700's (his son, John Jr., was born there in 1714). John Jr's sons Noah and Josiah, (my gggg grandfather) and other sons, fought in the Revolution. They returned to EdgeCo, and in 1800 joined the migration south to Georgia. For perhaps 100 years, these Stringers lived in Edgecombe County. I believe (but have no proof) that they were farmers, and had a plantation comprised of substantial parcels of land; there are indications that Josiah sold off several pieces of property in preparation for removing to GA. Josiah married (1) Selah Davis, daughter of Emory and Rachel Davis of Isle of Wight County, and (2) Lucretia Stringer, perhaps the widow of a Frances Stringer. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/r/i/Bobby-E-Britnell/index.html Thanks! My ancestor, James Biggs was born 20 August 1776 in Edgecombe county NC. He was the son of John Biggs who died in 1789. James Biggs married an Elizabeth Mangum about 1989. They had 12 children. James's grandson left a written record, which I possess, saying that James Biggs was "a country doctor, the only one in that part of the county." He lived on what was afterward known as the John P. Knight Farm, near the Halifax Co. line. Does anyone else link to this family? Does anyone know who Elizabeth Mangum's parents were. And has anyone ever heard of a John P. Knight farm in Edgecombe Co. near the Halifax Co. line? Thanks for any help you can give me...Joan in Maryland
