    1. Re: [NCDUPLIN] errors on census

    3. Suzanne, I copied the transcriptions exactly as they appear on the census records. Yes, you have to be creative with the spellings, because the census takers didn't ask how to spell names, as many couldn't read and write back then. There are a lot of misspellings on all of the census years, and I feel I wouldn't be doing them justice if I corrected the spellings. I wanted to make them as true and as accurate as the census taker wrote them down. You will also notice in later years when they started putting race in that some people are listed as colored when in fact they were white, or Indian when they were Asian, Hispanic, or mulatto if they didn't know what race they were. The census takers were just trying to get through the families as quickly as possible to get them finished. There are countless errors and if I corrected all the ones I find, then when someone goes to the original record to pull the family up they won't be able to find them as they will think the corrected versions are taken directly from the census record itself. Therefore creating more problems. That is why I put on the page that any errors or omissions are on the part of the census takers, and not my own mistakes. I hope this explanation helps... Diane: Thanks very much for all your good work!! On the 1790 Census: James, John & Benjamin LINEAR and Jesse LENEAR should be LANIER. If you use the CTRL F, you will not get any of them if you use LANIER. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the census work.
