Hi all, I have some bad news and some other news. For the bad news... I was contacted today by a member of the Duplin County Historical Foundation (not the same as the Duplin County Historical Society) saying that the Leslie Brown Cards as well as the Dallas Herring Library are their property. I was told I have to ask the Board permission to post any of the materials from Dallas Herring's Library, and it would be to their discretion to allow me and us permission to use and/or post the materials. I have written this person back and asked for a list of the Board members, their positions on the board as well as their contact information, so that I can ask "permission". As soon as I receive the list I will contact each member and try to obtain their permission. Now for the other news... As for copyright or anything else dealing with the cards, or any other materials that are or were gathered by any genealogist that is in the library, as long as the materials were not published and were gathered from public information there is and can be NO copyright. I am going to post a copy of the laws that will cover us on the posting of the Leslie Brown cards so no worries, the ones on the site will not be taken off line. Someone will be going to the library tomorrow to try and make copies of some of the cards as the library is supposed to be open Wednesday thru Thursday from 2-5 PM. I will let you know if they were able to make copies or not. If not, as soon as I get "permission" from the Board we will then begin making copies of them to be transcribed. For anyone that has sent or is sending a check to cover the costs of copying these cards, I will hold the checks, and if we are successful at making copies tomorrow they will go towards covering these costs. If not, I will hold the checks until we can get permission, or worse case scenario, are told no, that we can't make copies of the cards. If we are told that we cannot make copies I will send your checks back to you. Just wanted you to be aware of what is going on with this situation and I will keep you updated as I learn more.
