    1. James Newcomb
    2. I am fairly new to genealogy and have hit a dead end with my gggrandfather. His name is James Newcomb born 4 July 1842 and died in Wayne County 21 September 1919. There are several stories about Jim. One is that his parents were full Tuscarora Indians that were executed. A hunter by the name of Newcomb found Jim's parents in a wooded area of Seven Springs, Duplin County. The hunter took Jim and his siblings in and while they took his name he and his wife did not adopt them. The other story is that his parents were deceased when he and is siblings were very young. The children were bonded out to various families. When Jim was of age he was released. When the Civil War broke out he joined the North because he said he knew what it was like to be a slave. I have information passed down in the family that his mother's name was Mary Ward and one of his siblings, a sister, was named Tempe. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Marie
