Hi, According to "The North Carolina Gazetter" by William S. Powell, in 1749 a bill was introduced in the House of the General Assembly to erect the "upper part of New Hanover County" into Donegal County, but the bill was not passed. The parish would have been called St. Colomb, and it would have been named for Donegal County, Northern Ireland. In my research I have found nothing to tie Baron von Graffenreid to the Welsh settlement. I believe he was instrumental in bringing a number of "Swish Palatines" to the New Bern area. Some of which settled in Duplin County. The Duplin County Historical Society publication "Footnotes" contains some information on both Graffenreid and the Welsh tract. Unfortunately, I can not state exactly which issues of the "Footnotes". Steve Pearsall
