If any of you can get an old NC Gen Soc Journal Feb '82 -- There is a very helpful article. Navigation on GOSHEN Swamp. 1785. The project was supposed to clear the swamp so boats could pass, but it failed. A list of 231 settlers along the swamp are listed in the minutes. Included are abt 60 names NOT on the 1783 Tax List of Duplin, 1786 State Census or 1790 Federal Census. 92 Negroes & 14 by name & 7 sons of the settlers. The effort covers abt 20 mi & is divided into 17 Districts. Most settlers lived within 2 mi of the swamp & assigned tothe district nearest them. (14 to 23 men). The reason this is so important, as it shows who neighbors were & therefore who the females were apt to marry.......
