1784- Court Session OCT.1784 Ordered persons living on Goshen Swamp including Joseph Grimes to clear road from Goshen's Swamp from Gavin's old ford to lower end of Herring's slew between Daniel Herring and Joseph Grimes. Court Session 18 Oct. 1784 Ordered William Southerland, William Best, and William Kenan to settle estate of William Pearce deceased between Joseph Grimes- Administor- and orphans of said deceased. They reported Joseph Grimes indebted to orphans of William Pearce; 31 pounds to be divided among NAOMI, RUTH, WILLIAM and ALEXANDER PEARCE. the above was written out by hand, the lady is out of town, and i do know that the papers are not in the Archives, unless some was missing last year when we were there. The papers must be in Kenansville courthouse??? Notice the name Naomi, Joseph Grimes that died 1843 his wife was a Naomi ???? The above Joseph Grimes son of HUGH Grimes ?? d ca 1790( Mary Pierce recieves cash from estate of Joseph Grimes for son Alexander pd 1793(i have this paper so can be vertify hard to read, cannot read the amount ,paper in the Archives) The above Joseph dies ca1790, leaves to wife Ellinder and minor ch; Charles ,John, Joseph, James ,Thomas, and child wife is PG with, do not know if boy or girl??? Now there was another Joseph Grimes that died before 9/15/1783, unless the date is wrong?? because at the bottom there is a debt pd off and proven by a John Grimes 10/22/ 1790. i feel like this could have been a brother to Hugh Grimes(Joseph that died ca1783). the Joseph that died 1790 son of Hugh Grimes , Joseph that died 1843 Gson of HUGH GRimes, that m a Naomi??Pearce/Pierce??? , what do you think about this???????????????? From Baylus Brooks Pearce Site Snodan Pearce left the NW corner of Duplin County, NC for a tract of land granted to him in 1799 near Pin Hook, NC. It covered 300 acres, presumably for his service in the Revolution. There were many other subsequent purchases surrounding this grant, totaling more than 600 acres. In 1820, Snodan died, leaving parts of this land to his sons, Charles Pearce, Sampson Pearce, Wiley Pearce and Hugh Pearce. Wiley was to take care of his mother, Cythe (may have been a Grimes) and so, got the portion of land containing the plantation home. I agree that Cythe may well have been a Dau of HUGH GRIMES or maybe one of his sons, most likely a son of HUGH's but which one, Sampson did not have a dau Cythe, There was a Wiley that could have been a bro to HUgh in Duplin Co ca 1760's with land so know that this is not a son of Hugh's but a BRO Yes???(see Duplin Co.,page GRIMES FAMILY) Also Book 3A p 89 1794 has: Charles Grimes to William Pickett 20 july 1794 for 30 pounds 100 acres on ES of Northeast River and upper side of Cypress Creek and NS of the Gum Swamp being patented by Thomas Grimes 29 Oct.1782-him to John McGee and from him made to Joseph Grimes from him to Charles Grimes. My note CGT ( A Charles Grimes m Mary Picket 10/15/1787, this sounds like the son of Joseph son of HUGH, now the confusing part, we have the charles that m Mary Pickett, is this the family that went to SC, or did the other Charles and his brothers sons of the Joseph that died 1790 go to SC. I will leave this for now see what feed back i get and than go futher in my thinking. :-) Let me know what you think Christine Grimes Thacker
