Dear Sloan, I want to thank you myself for your decision about the Brown cards online. You made the right choice, just as I expected. Kellon just told my he relayed by thanks to you last night. I was swamped with messages to answer. I still have not caught up. I thought the file had been removed from the Internet yesterday. To test for that a few minutes ago, I Googled "Leslie Brown." Near the bottom of the third page the collection was listed. One click of the mouse and I was right back into the files. Then it occured to me to try my old bookmark. I saw the file online exactly as it was before the link was removed. Try it with Google and you will see what I mean. I am going to try to contact the Web Administrator for rootsweb. I will request that he remove the file completely. Of course, that will leave her with her own copy, which I am sure she will not destroy as we asked. We will just have to keep searching the Internet to be sure that it is not back online. Your really did the right thing, Sloan. Dallas would appreciate it so much. Best wishes, Horac
You've touched on some very important points, Donna D. It is a frustrating situation. On the one hand, Dr. Herring's collection needs to be maintained and, of course, funds are necessary for that. On the other hand, folks are eager to obtain further information about families of interest and will usually share what they have managed to collect from various sources, including the Leslie Brown cards, either through email, snail mail or posting snippets to family trees that are on-line. Apparently, Dr. Herring's collection is owned by the Board, including the Leslie Brown cards. If I understand it correctly, the information on those cards is not owned by the Board. That is a key issue and hopefully will be addressed by someone expert in copyright law, etc. In the interim, could we focus on an amicable resolution? For example, is there a way to get segments of the Leslie Brown data onto cd's for sale at reasonable prices, with a portion of each sale designated to be used to keep the library intact and functioning? I'm sure others of you have much better ideas. I do hope that all concerned will work toward a solution that will benefit us all. No offense to anyone but I really think this has been discussed enough on this mailing list and it's time to move on to different subjects Thank you Jane -----Original Message----- From: ncduplin-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncduplin-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Mike & Diane Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2008 1:39 PM To: ncduplin@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCDUPLIN] Fw: Card Collection I have been calling and emailing for a couple of weeks now with no return phone calls or any answers to my emails. I have however been hung up on, on a couple of occasions now when I called. Here is an email I sent yesterday to which no reply has come. -------Original Message------- From: Mike & Diane Date: 3/3/2008 11:28:27 AM To: fussellh@earthlink.net Subject: Card Collection Horace, I wish you would have contacted me before sending these messages through the mailing lists. I have repeatedly requested that Fred send me a list of board names and contact information so that I could contact the board in reference to these cards and I never received a reply. I did not know you were a member of the board or of anyone else with the exception of Fred. We could have tried to work this out without getting the boards all in an uproar. Would you please explain to me why the cards cannot be posted on the site? We were not gong to post all 36,000 of the cards as you say. We were going to post the ones that people were interested in. This in turn would lead more people to the library and would have made people a lot more interested in its holdings. I do send messages through the list about the library, about it needing volunteers, holdings, etc. I also advise anyone looking for information to go to the library including sending the phone number of the library to many people as well as the lists so people can make appointments to go there to get information. I have had people for months tell me they get no return phone calls and I tell them to keep trying, and yes this was before we ever became interested in the card collection. I have never tried to get a volunteer inside the library to gain access to the materials there. I am not one to stoop as low as you have portrayed me to be. I would never put anything on the site that has a copyright without the original authors permission, or permission from one of their decedents. Compilations of facts are not subject to copyright, hence they can be posted without the original authors permission. I have however posted where the cards came from as well as information on Leslie Brown. I truly believe we could have worked something out to benefit everyone with this. To Mr. Fussell and All, I had volunteered to help transcribe the West and Ezzell cards. Although I grew up in Wilmington and my North Carolina roots go back to the 1700's through both my parents, I now live in NJ. Through a message and sharing from Fran Powell, I began correcting errors from an old family tree and began gathering my own information..all online. I have been blessed to have family roots in Duplin County where there is so much sharing of information. I even found an original deed online from the Duplin County Registrar of Deeds, which proved that my ggg grandfather was Daniel West. Many original deeds can be viewed on-line through the Duplin County Registrar of deeds. Part of me understands the privacy of the collection but another part doesn't understand. I want to see the library survive and flourish and would never be deceptive in obtaining records from the Duplin County Historical Foundation. I don't think any of us thought we were doing any thing wrong. Wouldn't the transcription of these cards help protect these documents for further generations? How can their survival be guaranteed if kept on paper in a library? I also understand that to survive the library must be used. How can we help be a solution to the problem? Could the body of work be published on line with a membership fee to help support the library? If information that we obtain from the foundation library cannot be shared, how are we allowed to use it. I am working on information to share with my daughters and cousins. I don't want my family to get to my age and say "I wish I had asked my mother or my grandmother" like I did. I want everything that I know about my families to be shared. I continue to be amazed that in this "computer age" people think that their owning a computer should make access to everything free to them. As a long-time volunteer at a large genealogical library, I find that we get this question often ourselves - if we have so much information, why don't we put it online? - for "free" access. It is apparent that people don't understand about such things as rent, utilities, maintenance and the cost in the first place of acquiring our holdings. The small amount we charge to look up things for people doesn't even begin to address these costs. I think it would be wonderful if people would keep all of this in mind when discussing the Brown cards. If they are the property of the Duplin Foundation, then people can write to them and pay to get the copies they need. Certainly, not all of us can visit there often, but the mails still work. And, I'm sure that the library in Rose Hill will even take e-mail requests. I acquired copies of the cards I needed years ago and happily paid the Duplin Society for copying them for me. We are grateful for all the work done in making this list and its archives as good as it is, but we aren't "entitled" to everything that exists for Duplin County. Fran B in California > >
Hi all, I understand property rights and all, but I can't travel as well as I use to, and, putting things on-line is a wonderful way for us computer genealogist to get infomation. Look at the Library of Va. They have a wonderful collection on-line. I see no problem with putting the info out there in the age of computers. So, maybe the Duplin County Historical Foundation will join the computer age ,and let us share the collection. I think most fellow genealogist like the idea of sharing; I know I do. So, how bout it, Duplin County Historical Foundation; want to join the new world of computer space? Keep up the good work Diane. Jeanie<3 In a message dated 3/3/2008 10:01:39 A.M. Patricia, I do not know you but will pray for you and your family. I am so sorry to hear about your cancer. It looks like you may live near Kinston, the phone numbers look to be in that area. You may consider donating your family records to East Carolina Joyner Library. They have a wonderful genealogical library or the Heritage Room at Lenoir Community College. This is just a suggestion if no family members come forward. Please take care and my best to you and your family.
