Hi Everyone My name is Rosemary Reifel, and I am interested in the Pigford family. I am the recipient of some research done by someone now deceased and whom I did not know that contains alot of information on the family, but all the locations refer to New Hanover County, and I don't know which of the descendent counties is the correct one. The Pigford line I am interested in was in New Hanover County from c. 1738 to c. 1838, when several members of the family migrated to Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Solomon and Owen Pigford were elders in Rockfish Presbyterian Church near Wallace and near Rockfish Creek. I believe that this is Duplin County. Am I correct? The will of William Pigford Sr. (father of Solomon) mentions a plantation on both sides of Sills Creek. He and his wife Sarah (surname unknown) are believed to be buried at "Penderlea Cemetery, now known as Potts Memorial Cemetery, which encompasses the old Pigford Cemetery, where their son Edward and his wife Isabella Lamb Pigford, are buried". William's will was probated in 1803. Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone? I would appreciate any information you could give me as to location. William's gggranddaughter was my ggrandmother. Regards, Rosemary Hayes Reifel Houston, Texas
HI Beth, the mail did not go as I typed it, yes the # by the name I put in, so that anyone could sort of tell how close someone may be to someone else. Slaves should be on the top line, and the slaves are the 4th number. it sure looks messy, but after it is sent I could not change it. I knew someone had ask about the Pearsall's so that is why I put them and sent it to the list. Glad i could help Christine

Hi, Does anyone else have these surnames during the 1700's in Duplin Co. - BARFIELD, TAYLOR, or McCULLOH ? Goshen Swamp is mentioned a lot in William TAYLOR's land transactions, but not being local, I'm not familiar with the lay of the land. Any historical tidbits from "neighbors" would be welcome ! And of course news from "cousins". Nancy Prouty, CA

Hi again! I just came across this info on a William Pearce of Bertie Co, NC... it contains a reference to a Butler who married one of William's daughters... owing to the nearness in locality of your Butlers in Duplin Co. to my Pearce's... I just wondered if this might be of interest to both of us... take a gander and let me know... it's a will and some legality over the contesting of said will.. Hi Charlie! I'm happy to see someone else whose family lived in that area of Duplin... my Pearce's lived in Pin Hook... which is basically the same spot... on the deeds mentioned in the county and on Snodan Pearce's will... that particular road was always refered to as the Old or New Road depending on the date of the document.. I believe it was considered to be part of the old Fayetteville- Wilmington Road that went to the Maple Hill area then towards the west in (present day Pender Co.) just south of the Holly Shelter creek... the map shows a town called "Shakin" on that old road... I never found anything but an old tobacco barn and an old store that's been turned into a house! LOL But, the old road is still dirt on the south side... Hwy 53 was built on the north side of the creek as a substitute for the old road, so it fell into disuse except by locals... My webpage on the Pearce's shows the area in Duplin, though... most residents of that area refered to it as living in Sloan, NC... Pin Hook must have been a more recent nomenclature for the crossroads there on what's now Hwy 50... Here's a link to my webpage: <A HREF="http://members.aol.com/BAJULUS/pearce.html">Pearce/Pierce of Duplin Co, NC</A> Let me know if this helps!! Baylus Brooks

Hope to correspond with anyone researching or having info on the "nest" of BUTLERs who lived in the Cypress Creek area of SE Duplin about 1790s to 1860s. Have names of Thomas, Christopher, Hezekiah, Frederick, Elias, James, Jacob, and my g-g-grandfather Elijah, who during those years had their names on deeds to the same 80 acre tract on Watering Hole Branch/ Roundabout Branch, waters of Cypress Creek. Have not been able to determine relationship between these but believe Thomas to be the eldest then Christopher to be Thomas' son, but from there on it's just a wild guess. Another mystery: On current DeLorme NC county map, the road running S from Cypress Creek community in Duplin to Maple Hill in Pender is shown as "Blacksmith Shop Road". Signs say "Cypress Creek Rd" and those I talked to in the area had never heard it called anything else. My Elijah, and one of his sons, were blacksmiths, and I have visions of finding their old shop along that road <grin>. DeLorme makes some road name mistakes but this is too much of a coincidence for me to let go of it. Does anyone have access to Road Jury records or early Duplin/New Hanover records which might shed some light on this? Charlie Weaver, Winston-Salem, NC
