    1. DUARK, KING, CAMERON
    2. Donna Witt
    3. Hello, Another researcher sent me these Sampson Co. Court Minutes. (I am sending this to the Duplin list because the CAMERON's and KING's were also in Duplin Co.) The DUARK surname is new to me and I was wondering if anyone is familiar with it. Is this the correct spelling (I thought that it might also be DARK or ??). Any clues are greatly appreciated. Donna FEATHERBED DISPUTED: It having been made to appear to this court that Stephen King, administrator of Magdalene Duark, deceased, through mistake took into his possession a feather bed as the property of the said deceased, which was literally the property of Sarah Cameron, ordered that the said Stephen King give up to the said Sarah Cameron the above mentioned. (1787) DUARK ESTATE: The committee appointed to divide the estate of Nancy Duark, deceased, among her lawful representatives, report as follows: That after deducting out 8 pounds and 16 shillings which we allowed Isaac Cameron for an account he rendered in against her estate, the residue of the estate amounting to 27 pounds, 9 shillings and 4 1/2 pence. That the sum divided among her heirs makes each share 3 pounds, 9 shillings and 4 1/4 pence. Signed Thomas Sutton, William King and James Blackman. (1794)

    2. I signed onto the List today. Is anyone working on the TAYLOR family of JONATHAN TAYLOR? A man of that name came into Duplin quite early, and I'm sure there were several generations of men named JONATHAN TAYLOR. The last two that I know of wound up in Wayne County. Also, I have an extensive research paper developed on WILLIAM TAYLOR, the one who was murdered in 1787 by one of his slaves. BILL LINDER, Arlington, Virginia. <BLinder777@aol.com>

    1. Peter, Mitchell and Levin WATKINS of Duplin
    2. Oliver Jenkins
    3. I am searching for the predecessors of my gr gr gr grandfather, Mitchell WATKINS (b. between 1740 and 1750. He and his two brothers Levin and Peter WATKINS probably descended from one of the three brothers of the same names who are said to have emigrated from Wales in the 17th century. My gr gr gr grandfather Mitchell Watkins and his brothers lived in Edgecombe and Duplin Counties in North Carolina. Mitchell was a Revolutionary soldier under the command of General Green. Peter and Mitchell left North Carolina for Kentucky and Georgia respectfully around 1801 or 1802. Levin stayed in Duplin County, N. C., where he served in the North Carolina State Legislature. Does anyone have information on the parentage of these three North Carolina brothers? Thanks, Oliver -

    3. If any of you can get an old NC Gen Soc Journal Feb '82 -- There is a very helpful article. Navigation on GOSHEN Swamp. 1785. The project was supposed to clear the swamp so boats could pass, but it failed. A list of 231 settlers along the swamp are listed in the minutes. Included are abt 60 names NOT on the 1783 Tax List of Duplin, 1786 State Census or 1790 Federal Census. 92 Negroes & 14 by name & 7 sons of the settlers. The effort covers abt 20 mi & is divided into 17 Districts. Most settlers lived within 2 mi of the swamp & assigned tothe district nearest them. (14 to 23 men). The reason this is so important, as it shows who neighbors were & therefore who the females were apt to marry.......

    2. Donna Witt
    3. Hello! I am seeking information and correspondence from anyone working on the above named families. I am especially interested in any information on Philip Alexander CAMERON. Philip was the son of Daniel CAMERON of Northampton/Bertie Co., NC and moved to Duplin/Sampson Co, NC c.1778 (Six Runs Creek and Hoes Swamp). Living next to Philip was Isaac Cameron and Philip was a witness to many of Isaac's legal documents. Also in the county at the same time was a Daniel Cameron, but nothing is known of him so far. In Sampson Co. in the same time frame was the family of Solomon McCLAM (McLAMB) who had a son named Bryant. Solomon and Bryant moved to Williamsburg Co., SC and Bryant married Isabella McCutchen. Isabella's sister Sarah McCutchen married Bryant CAMERON b.1778 and it is he, who I suspect is the son of either Isaac or Daniel Cameron. Here is what I know of Philip Alexander CAMERON's parents and collaterals. Daniel CAMERON (1685-1752) married Ann BROWN and had the following children named in his will dated Jan. 7, 1747, proved? May Court 1752: Son: Philip Alexander CAMERLEN {m. to Susanna ?} and moved to Duplin/Sampson Co., NC Dau: Rachel {m. ?} " Ann {m. ? WHITLEY} " Bridget {m. William GODWIN} " Elezin(Eliza) {m. Robert TEWE} " Mary m. {? BEST} " Elisabeth {m. ? WHITLEY} grandson: Joseph GODWIN granddaughter: Belason Wife & Executrix: Ann Wit: William WHITLEY, Joshua WILLIAMS Clerk of Court: I. EDWARDS According to a recent corespondent of mine, Daniel CAMERON was in Bertie Co. in 1728 and it is probable that some of his children where born there. He also generously provided the following information: Daniel's wife, Ann (Browne) CAMERON was the daughter of John BROWNE(1666-1721) and Ann WILLIAMS of Isle of Wight Co., VA. Their children were: 1.Ann BROWNE m. Daniel CAMERON 2. Mary BROWNE 3. Bridgett BROWNE m. John Rasberry 4. James BROWNE 5. Thomas BROWNE 6. Elizabeth BROWNE Ann (Williams) BROWNE was the daughter of JOHN WILLIAMS(1647-1692) and Ann WHITLEY of Isle of Wight Co., VA.Their children were: 1. Ann WILLIAMS m. John BROWNE 1666-1721 2. Mary WILLIAMS 1682-17XX 9. Jane WILLIAMS 1684-17XX 10.Nicholas WILLIAMS of Surry Co. It is said that some of the WILLIAMS also moved to Duplin/Sampson Co. John WHITLEY(1628-1670) m. 2. J E COBB
    3. I was wondering if anyone is related to a James Holland who lived in Duplin County during the 1784-1787 census. He married a Mary Dobson on 7/20/1785. Daughter of William Dobson . James was administrator of his estate when he died on 7/18/1785. I was told he had four sons Thomas B., John A., James D., and Houston R as does my James Holland. The dates seem wrong for him to be the father of these children. I also have James Holland as married to a Sarah in the 1820's in Onslow County. My James also had a brother named Thomas Holland who he killed in 1828. If anyone has info on these people please let me know. I would love to share information.
