Dear Pat Hoffman, Thank you for your most interesting information. I had not been able to provide what I suspected, namely that Peter Hargett was the son of Frederick Hargett. Obviously one is always looking for important relatives and I had hoped to connect a lot of us Kornegays to Frederick Hargett. Frederick Hargett was as I recall the chairman of the sub-committee of the Board of Trustees of the new University of North Carolina that was charged with literally finding a location for the school. It was Frederick Hargett that lead his sub-committee into the woods, so to speak, to come up with Chapel Hill as the spot. As William S. Powell describes in his THE FIRST STATE UNIVERSITY A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA,1972, "During the first week in November [1792], Frederick Hargett, Alexander Mebane, James Hogg, William Hill, David Stone, and Willie Jones visited a number of sites ... and on November 5 they 'proceeded to View New Hope Chapel hill in Orange County'" Frankly I have been just as interested in the Frederick Hargett connection as the Thomas Savage one. Since I have not seen an answer, I'll give my rookie genealogy opinion. I have noticed in some very early wills (1600s) that a very much loved wife might be the first one mentioned. After that might come the sons, then the daughters. I have wondered if the daughters were left completely out of a few, since only sons were listed. If the wife came after the sons, I wonder how important she was. By 1800, it seems to me the children are listed in whatever order they happen to come to the mind of the person stating what he wants done with his earthly belongings. Sometimes a child might even be mentioned more than once. I don't believe you can assume anything, but this may incorrect. I wish someone else would comment. Lura
If you are a "joiner" some of you might be interested in an organization many of you are eligible for, namely the Order of Descendants of Ancient Planters. I just came across it on the Internet. It is based in Raleigh and its website is <http://tyner.simplenet.com/PLANTER.HTM> It is an hereditary-patriotic type organization for those whose ancestors arrived in Virginia prior to 1616. Ann Isler is a direct descendant of Thomas Savage, the Boy of Jamestown. Ann Isler married Peter Hargett. Their daughter Hester Hargett married Isaac Kornegay. Another daughter Penelope Hargett married Daniel Simmons. And as many of you know, Hester and Isaac's son Harget Kornegay married his first cousin Susanna Simmons, daugther of Penelope and Daniel Simmons. Their children are the ancestors of thousands of us.
Hi, Regarding my earlier posting. I made a mistake when I stated earlier that the Swiss-Palatines to New Bern were in an issue of "Footnotes". The February 1997 issue of "The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal" pages 3-10 contain a write up and is titled "Swiss-Palatines to New bern: A list of Know Persons who left Switzerland and Germany to Settle New Bern, NC, in 1710". I was able to find an issue of the "Footnotes" published by the Duplin County Historical Society. Issue Number 32 - 4 Feb 1989 regarding the Welsh Tract. Steve Pearsall
I need a researcher in the Duplin and Greene County if anyone available? Joanna Long Scarboro in California
Does any one know-when children are listed in wills of this time period, are they usually listed in order according to age? Can I assume that the last child listed would be the youngest? Also, does anyone have access to the Duplin Co census records of 1830 & 40? I am looking to find out how many males/females and ages are listed with Frederick Ezzell of Duplin Co in 1830 & 1840. And if there is a listing for a Parham Ezell/Ezzell for these years. Appreciate any help. Thanks, Sherri

Did any settle in the area of Six Runs Creek just south of Clinton and Turkey, which was then Duplin County, NC? My interest is in finding parents for Alexander Carrol/Carrell. He settled in the Six Runs Creek Area of Duplin County sometime prior to 1783. That area became Sampson County in 1784. Demcy Carrel signed (his signature) Alexander's bond for his marriage to Lucy Royal April 7, 1783. Listed in the 1790 Census there was a DEMEY CARROL and a DEMCY CARROL. [All the CARRELLS/CARROLLS were listed as CARROL that year.] These names seemed to be the same ones written by the Clerk of Court to be Dempsey Carrell and Dempsey Carrell, Jr. I cannot find it now, but early in my research I saw somewhere on the internet a marriage of a Demey Carrel to ?Maria?Baulch?, who was born in Switzerland. A local Duplin County historian suggested some early settlers in the area around Six Runs Creek might have been involved in gathering resin for turpentine. I have read that some Swiss Settlers also did that. If anyone has knowledge of the Palatines' names and/or location where they settled, I would like to exchange information with them. I have information on the family of Major Hardy Carrell, who was the son of Alexander and Lucy. Lura "A MERRY HEART DOETH GOOD LIKE A MEDICINE." Hi, According to "The North Carolina Gazetter" by William S. Powell, in 1749 a bill was introduced in the House of the General Assembly to erect the "upper part of New Hanover County" into Donegal County, but the bill was not passed. The parish would have been called St. Colomb, and it would have been named for Donegal County, Northern Ireland. In my research I have found nothing to tie Baron von Graffenreid to the Welsh settlement. I believe he was instrumental in bringing a number of "Swish Palatines" to the New Bern area. Some of which settled in Duplin County. The Duplin County Historical Society publication "Footnotes" contains some information on both Graffenreid and the Welsh tract. Unfortunately, I can not state exactly which issues of the "Footnotes". Steve Pearsall
Hi All, Awhile back someone ask about a Hezekiah Grimes that married a Rebecca, well i knew i had seen something but did not have the papers in front of me to Answer that mail, but now i do :-). While in Duplin Co, at the courthouse with Hugh and Betty Grimes of La. ,came across this at first i thought it may be the Hezekiah that was married to Margeret Kornegay, that no one knew what happen to him, the story goes he just rode off one day and never came back, but there is something wrote about him dieing in 1867,and buried in Priceton, Wayne Co.,Nc near Seven Springs,no marker or stone. This Hezekiah was the son of John ,gson of Joseph, ggson of Joseph, gggson of Hugh Grimes of Duplin Co.,NC. The Gfather Joseph raised his 6 grandchildren, even though the father was alive. Now back to the other HEZEKIAH Grimes son of John S and Mary Grimes M 5/1868 Rebecca Grant dau of Jesse and Sallie Grant. other Grimes Marriages in the same book i have dau of the John S & Sallie for Nancy Grimes m Wm Joyner 6 June 1856. John Grimes m Nancy C Moore 6/24/1851. If anyone has info of the above names please let me know . Thank you Christine Grimes Thacker
Is anyone familiar with this county that was supposedly on the NE Cape Fear River and the Black River? Supposedly the Welsh came from New Castle on the Delaware with Baron von Graffenreid to settle this area. As it included what is now a part of Duplin County, I am interested in knowing if there was a list of the people coming over with this Baron von Graffenreid, or at least a little bit more history on this area. Thanks Wanda

It is estimated that only 7% of the people using Rootsweb's resources are contributing to Rootsweb's support. Please help if you can. Please do not respond to this message to the list. WHY DOES ROOTSWEB NEED YOUR SUPPORT? by Dr. Brian Leverich <leverich@rootsweb.com> Sometimes it is difficult for users to understand the costs involved in operating RootsWeb and why it is worth genealogists' time and money to support RootsWeb. For example, take the United States census. RootsWeb is currently providing server support to the USGenWeb Archives and Census Projects as they bring the U.S. census online. Our goal is to have both a searchable index to the census *AND* images of all the pages available on an open basis for all Internet genealogists. Our best estimate is that bringing the census online will require about 3.6 terabytes of data storage. That means we will need about 200 18 GB hard disks, and each of those disks costs about $1,000. That means the data storage alone is going to cost $200,000, and that doesn't include the servers and the bandwidth to make that storage accessible over the Web. Is $200,000 a lot of money? Well, sort of. Regardless of how much they want to help, Karen and Brian couldn't pay for that even if they mortgaged their house and cashed in their pension savings. On the other hand, $200,000 is only about 67 cents per user at RootsWeb. That is about 1/100 of what some commercial firms are charging for data they have locked up in members-only areas. Bringing the U.S. census online is not the only project RootsWeb supports. We are hosting literally hundreds of other data projects, some American and many for other countries (like the British FreeBMD Project). If all (or even if most) of our users were contributors, there is a lot RootsWeb could be doing to accelerate the rate at which public records are brought online and opened to the public. You can help us bring those records online. For details about support levels/benefits and payment options, visit <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> or send e-mail to <RW-info@rootsweb.com>. The regular mail address is: RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, P.O. Box 6798, Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798.
