    3. Dear listmembers, I don't know how many of you are related on the Duplin-Sampson-Johnston-Wayne Co., NC Thorntons of supposedly the Thomas Sr., born ca. 1719, who died Duplin Co., 1777,and wife Martha Thornton line. Is everyone as confused as I am with the many Thomas Jr's. , Sr.'s and Nathaniels? Other researchers have indicated that according to the deeds of Duplin Co.,NC, the sons of this Thomas Sr. were: 1. Herod ca. 1743 2. Nathaniel ca.1745 3. John 1749 4. Benjamin ----- 5. Thomas (Jr.) 1755 Maybe someone else has a better idea of birthyears? Now the problem comes with me not knowing when young men attained the age to have property in their names in NC, at that time period. I was always told throughout my years of research that it was 21. When a son became 21, he could be found in the tax records in the State of Kentucky. That is one way to guestimate their birthyears, when they were not named, but as males in the early census. Now I am wondering about those Duplin Co.,NC deed records! One deed dated 21 Feb. 1759, John Teele to Herod Thornton.-----but Herod is only supposed to be around 16?? Another deed dated 15 March 1755 Mark Phillips to Thomas Thornton JR., with witnesses as: Thomas Thornton Sr. and Nathaniel Thornton.------now Jr. was BORN 1755, and Nathaniel was only supposed to be about 10 years old??? Can anyone set these records straight?? Mamie

    1. Joseph Grimes/Pearce
    2. 1784- Court Session OCT.1784 Ordered persons living on Goshen Swamp including Joseph Grimes to clear road from Goshen's Swamp from Gavin's old ford to lower end of Herring's slew between Daniel Herring and Joseph Grimes. Court Session 18 Oct. 1784 Ordered William Southerland, William Best, and William Kenan to settle estate of William Pearce deceased between Joseph Grimes- Administor- and orphans of said deceased. They reported Joseph Grimes indebted to orphans of William Pearce; 31 pounds to be divided among NAOMI, RUTH, WILLIAM and ALEXANDER PEARCE. the above was written out by hand, the lady is out of town, and i do know that the papers are not in the Archives, unless some was missing last year when we were there. The papers must be in Kenansville courthouse??? Notice the name Naomi, Joseph Grimes that died 1843 his wife was a Naomi ???? The above Joseph Grimes son of HUGH Grimes ?? d ca 1790( Mary Pierce recieves cash from estate of Joseph Grimes for son Alexander pd 1793(i have this paper so can be vertify hard to read, cannot read the amount ,paper in the Archives) The above Joseph dies ca1790, leaves to wife Ellinder and minor ch; Charles ,John, Joseph, James ,Thomas, and child wife is PG with, do not know if boy or girl??? Now there was another Joseph Grimes that died before 9/15/1783, unless the date is wrong?? because at the bottom there is a debt pd off and proven by a John Grimes 10/22/ 1790. i feel like this could have been a brother to Hugh Grimes(Joseph that died ca1783). the Joseph that died 1790 son of Hugh Grimes , Joseph that died 1843 Gson of HUGH GRimes, that m a Naomi??Pearce/Pierce??? , what do you think about this???????????????? From Baylus Brooks Pearce Site Snodan Pearce left the NW corner of Duplin County, NC for a tract of land granted to him in 1799 near Pin Hook, NC. It covered 300 acres, presumably for his service in the Revolution. There were many other subsequent purchases surrounding this grant, totaling more than 600 acres. In 1820, Snodan died, leaving parts of this land to his sons, Charles Pearce, Sampson Pearce, Wiley Pearce and Hugh Pearce. Wiley was to take care of his mother, Cythe (may have been a Grimes) and so, got the portion of land containing the plantation home. I agree that Cythe may well have been a Dau of HUGH GRIMES or maybe one of his sons, most likely a son of HUGH's but which one, Sampson did not have a dau Cythe, There was a Wiley that could have been a bro to HUgh in Duplin Co ca 1760's with land so know that this is not a son of Hugh's but a BRO Yes???(see Duplin Co.,page GRIMES FAMILY) Also Book 3A p 89 1794 has: Charles Grimes to William Pickett 20 july 1794 for 30 pounds 100 acres on ES of Northeast River and upper side of Cypress Creek and NS of the Gum Swamp being patented by Thomas Grimes 29 Oct.1782-him to John McGee and from him made to Joseph Grimes from him to Charles Grimes. My note CGT ( A Charles Grimes m Mary Picket 10/15/1787, this sounds like the son of Joseph son of HUGH, now the confusing part, we have the charles that m Mary Pickett, is this the family that went to SC, or did the other Charles and his brothers sons of the Joseph that died 1790 go to SC. I will leave this for now see what feed back i get and than go futher in my thinking. :-) Let me know what you think Christine Grimes Thacker

    2. DORIS GLASCOE
    3. I want to thank all that has responded to my problem in a couple of weeks in visiting the Pamlico area. My Mother and I are planning to go to Pamlico, Lenoir, Greene, Duplin, Craven, Wayne and Wake Counties. Hopefully we don't have to make alternative plans. She now says she must go to Florence & Mesic to check on the family grave sites. I just pray they are alright so she will have peace of mind. I pray for all that are in the flooded areas. I live in Florida and now am sorry for all for their misfortune because of Dennis & Floyd. Again, thanks again. Still hoping a good report will come. Someone asked where Florence was located. It is east of Bayboro in Pamlico County. I believe it is on the Pamlico Sound. The gravesite is on the Bay River I believe.

    3. What is Florence NC near? Is it a small town? I know of Florence S C. All of eastern NC is or was flooded. Some places were 30 feet (yes thirty) above normal. You cannot begin to imagin the way it is here. I have herd rumors of floating coffins but dont know for sure, (you hear a little of everything in times like these.) Call the town hall or Chamber of Com. befor you come to make sure. They will know best. Maybe the County Sherrif ect. I have heard reports....but not given the area...that coffins were actually floating in the river streams. One part of my family has an old grave site in Florence off a river and my Mother & I are concerned. 1. Age of Henry C K
    2. Hi I was just putting names in my file and notice that the age on the cemetery book has to be wrong for Henry Carraway Kornegay and Mary Grimes Kornegay , they are both 10 years off, either the 2 was taken for a 3 when someone did the research on the graveyards. 1850 census ,Henry c is 30, Mary is 25, Sidney A. 4, Sarah A 2, (if Henry was b in 1830 he would be only 16 when 1st child was b, Mary age 11 when 1st child b. 1860 census has Henry 41, Mary 36, Sidney 14, Sarah A 12, Victoria 10, Mary 7, Anna 5, Isabella 2. Have not come across the 1870 census, so i think i am missing 5 children :-) , Someone has a Charles D. Kornegay Bk, will you check and see what the book has, i copied some info from the Oates Pages and the dates are Henry Carraway Kornegay (1830-1894) Mary Crimes (typo) GRIMES (1834-1884) Sidney A.(1849-1919) Please let me know if you have any info on this line. Thank you Christine Grimes Thacker

    3. Does anyone have a William Thompson in Duplin County in the 1700's? He possibly had three children: John Carter, Bathsheba and Benjamin (b. abt. 1783). In 1799 Benjamin moved to Bladen County. He had 4 sons: Jesse, John, William, and Shadrach, plus possibly 3 more sons. Thank you for any help you might be able to provide. Dee Thompson

    3. Hello List: I know the lists are for genealogy related info, but there's been alot of traffic concerning Floyd, flooding, and road conditions lately, so I thought I'd pass on the following phone number and Info. (919) 549-5100, Ext 7623 connects to the Highway Patrol in Durham. They have a recording that describes current road conditions in Eastern NC. As of 8pm on 20 Sep, Hiway 17 is open from New Bern all the way into SC. I 95 is open, although there is still some flooding, in which case only one lane is open to allow access around. I 95 to Lumberton and US74 East from Lumberton to Wilmington is also open. Also, Tammy: I just spoke to my parents on the Ten Mile in Onslow Co. The Five Mile, Nine Mile, and Ten Mile areas of Onslow are all clear; however, about the only way in is from 258. I'm not sure about power, but my mom has electricity and phone. Any access from Chinquapin or Beulaville is almost impossible due to flooding on Hwy 50 at the Cape Fear River, and parts of the road around Lyman and Pin Hook are also under water. My mom said she'd seen reports of all kinds of livestock floating in the rivers, and even coffins in some areas, where low lying cemeteries were washed out. My grandmother lives near Hargett's Crossroads in Jones...they're boiling water. Everyone take care and be safe... Chris

I have found several Ezzell men who were born during this time period but cannot definately prove that they are sons of Frederick. These are the men I want to find out about: Alexander Ezzell (b 1799, Duplin Co), Benjamin P Ezzell (b 1806, Duplin Co), and Josiah R (b 1801). What about a Hansel Ezzell listed on the 1840 census-does anyone know who he belongs with? Appreciate any help you can give. Sherri

    1. Grimes / Kornegay
    2. It seems like i have in my info that a bro that m a Williams girl(which would be Jennetta that married HR Kornegay, had killed his bro Joe(Joseph Kornegaybca1809 d1864), and i have been meaning to ask you about that, ( i just found what i was talking about) it is in the World Family Tree vol 5 #2711, below is what it has in the notes under George Fisher Kornegay "The late Judge Henry A. Grady Knew of another child and penciled the name in an autographed copy of OUTLAW GENEALOGY to Mrs Harold( Ida Outlaw) Jones of New Bern,N.C. He wrote as follows:" Henry Robert Kornegay married a Williams, and his wife's brother killed Joe Kornegay, her husband's and father of Joe Kornegay (sec 96) who lived in Morehead City. She was the mother of R.D., Fisher and Charles. He married (2) Callie(Catherine) Outlaw(sec72). She had no Children. Than he married Koonce. Also ,Joe Kornegay married Peggy Roberts. Children: George Fisher, Mary , married a Grimes; Joe, married Delia Outlaw: John: Robert Kornegay of Mt Olive, married Adeline Kornegay. George F. Kornegay married Susan outlaw (sister of Joe's wife)" AHO. The above is where i got the Mary m a Grimes i guess and i had seen it somewhere else and He left Margaret Kornegay a dau of Joe' s that m Hezekiah Grimes out. In my files for the dau of Joseph Kornegay b ca 1809, i have a dau Sallie Ann m a Grimes ?? does anyone have any info on that?? Also in the Maxwell cem i have found a Martha Grady b 3/6/1839 d 8/27/1888 wife of Henry Grimes, this could be the bro of Spicy jane and the others that i do not have a name for the son of John Grimes, never mine i think i found him, 1860 wayne Co 10 hh's away from John A. Kornegay 48, and Sally 41. 14 HH's away from Wm & Spicy Jane, it is John Grimes age 30 , Nancy age 20, Hesekiah 8, Does anyone have info on this family?? so this has to be the missing boy :-) and i am wondering if maybe the age for nancy the dau of Joseph & Margaret could be wrong?? and this is their dau ?? just reaching but if you find anything let me know ok. Good luck & Thank you All CGT.
