    1. Fw: Marriage Bonds
    2. Katherine Ricker
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Katherine Ricker To: NC-Duplin@r4ootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, October 23, 1999 4:26 PM Subject: Marriage Bonds Apparently, marriage bonds were required by law in North Carolina beginning in the 1700s. Did Duplin and Sampson Counties record the bonds? If so, where might such records be? The time frame in which I am keenly interested is 1800-1840. Thanking you!

Tex-Mach, inc. wrote: > Does anyone understand the "first cousin once removed", "second cousin > once removed" and so on? > Janice White Janice, I looked to see if I had this explanation in some official written form. I did not find it, so I will give a try at it! If someone can correct, add to, or simplify this, please do. "Cousins" must be of the SAME generation away from a common ancestor. For example, a child of my father's brother is my FIRST cousin. {We both have the same grandfather.} My son and his (my first cousin) son are SECOND cousins. {They both have the same great-grandfather.} Their sons would be THIRD cousins. {They both have the same great-great-grandfather.} The "_____ removed" comes into the picture when cousins are not the same number of generations away from a common ancestor. My son would not be a first cousin of my first cousin. They are not the same number of generations away from my grandfather. My son would be a first cousin 'once removed' of my first cousin. My grandson would be a first cousin 'twice removed' of my first cousin. Age has little to do with it. In one branch of a family all the individuals may have married young and had their children early, while in another branch the children may have been born late in the life of their parents. So people the same age may be third cousins 'six times removed'. I hope this is helpful! As I look back over what I have written, it looks just about as clear as mud! 1. Blackman or Blackburn?
    2. Looking for any information on Adeline (called Addie) Blackman or Blackburn. She married Jasper Franklin Knowles (called Frankie). Addie is listed in several bibles and census. Her last name is listed as Blackman and or Blackburn in all above cases. Does anyone know anything about her? What was her last name. She is listed in the 1860 census under Daniel Sutton and mother Elizabeth. Do not know why. Rumor has it that she is buried in the old Knowles/Kissner cemetry in Wallace, N.C. She is a true puzzle. Any help? Pam

    1. Glendora Thomas Swaney
    2. Judy
    3. For those of you researching the Swaney/Thomas line: Came across a gift deed today. Charles G Thomas was giving land to his children. In the one that gave property to his daughter Glendora, her name on the document is Glenn Dora. I realize the documents were not written by Charles, but he could read and write, so he I'm sure he specified that it was 2 names, not one. This is backed up by my great uncle. He, also has stated that her name is definitely NOT Glendora, but is Glenn Dora. Glenn Dora Thomas b1866 in Duplin Co. was married to Alfred Swaney b1840 in Randolph Co. Dec 17, 1890. Yes, she was 24 and he was 49. Judy
