Looking for information about the families of Benjamin Ezzell, who married Mary Polly Quinn, and Reuben Ezzell, who married Sarah Rackley. These were both sons of Mikel Ezzell of Duplin Co-named in his will of 1800. Need names of their children. Appreciate any help with this family. Thanks, Sherri

To show you the trouble I've had with your family, the partial message (below) is something that I started on November 4th. I've kept it in the draft folder of my computer hoping to find more before I sent it to you. "Sue, I can't find anything on them in Duplin County during the very early years (the focus of most of my books) but I do have a list of North Carolina Taxpayers 1679-1790 that might enable you to bridge to your known data." Imagine me glee when I got your e-mail yesterday giving me more family names, Finally, I could do something to help you. Oh, thanks a lot for this bunch, too. Is it possible that your entire family was in the "witness protection program"? There is nothing on LUCK (i.e. no luck with the Lucks) in Duplin. There is nothing on GRESHAM/GRISHAM/GRISSOM in Duplin County. A little bit on BISHOP, O'DANIEL and HAIR/HARE in Duplin County. A little bit on HAIR/HARE in Bladen County. A little bit on WEEKS in every county EXCEPT Duplin. I'll gladly send you everything that I have today. Maybe someone on the List can help. Dee
Hi Joe, So it's sunny again, huh? Well, it's 78 degrees in Atlanta and beautiful and not a single earthquake in sight. Are you talking about the Early Records of North Carolina, Vols. 1 and 2? If so, they can be ordered from Southern Historical Press, 1-800-233-0152 (864-233-2346 or fax 864-233-2349). The owners are out of town until Friday, but someone usually answers the phone for orders about 10:00 am est. The books are $30.00 each and, by the way, are just the first two volumes of an eight volume set. I choose these two because they were the only ones that enumerated which counties were included in the contents. Mike, Among the books that I have on order are Early Records of North Carolina, Vols. 1 (1753-1790) and 2 (1677-1790). Robeson County is one of the 37 counties included. The first volume covers Probates, Admin. and Inventories, with over 11,000 indexed names. The second volume is a "potpourri of legal records". In theSouthern Historical Press catalog there is not one single publicaton that addresses just Robeson County. Naturally, I'll let you know as soon as I get them. Is there an NCRobeson-L@rootsweb.com? Sorry I couldn't be more help. Thank you, Story. Your package will be at the postoffice in about fifteen minutes. Here's the information you asked about. I know that Elizabeth will be grateful. Make the checks payable to Bladen County Historical Society and note on the check that it is for "publishing books". Send it to Elizabeth Turner, P.O. Box 873, Elizabethtown, North Carolina 28337. This seems to me to be an example of the ultimate recycling: BCHS produces these books, we benefit from the information published, and we, in turn, support their efforts. No one will ever know if you choose to do this, and rightly so. It's merely a solution for putting the "reimbursement" question to rest. I have zeroxed its pages well over 2000 times, flipping it back and forth and upside down on the copier, not a torn page, not a loose page. My copy has done "yeoman's duty" and still looks great. Next, some of the dear people that I have done lookups for are getting rather insistent about paying me mailing costs, etc. Is there an entity in Bladen County ( genealogical of course) that could use their contributions? We're not talking about endowments, just a few dollars at a time. Please let me know your thoughts. I sure don't want to have to tear up or return checks, but neither will I accept them. Dear Duplin List and Taylor List Friends, Tonight I placed on Family History House, my research paper on William Taylor of Duplin County who was murdered by his slave Darby in the spring of 1787. I have been working on this over the course of about ten years, and it is a lengthy and comprehensive paper. I feel it contains some of the most moving historical material I have worked with. It would be my pleasure to have Duplin and Taylor List guests visit the site, and to give your invited comments and critiques, also any suggestions for correction and addition. Many Duplin names are mentioned. Bill Linder Arlington, Virginia http://www.familyhistoryhouse.com This research paper is under RESEARCH, then TAYLOR, then DUPLIN.
Fifty two packages went to the Post Office this afternoon and I can't seem to stop giggling. Enjoy. Dee

My great grandfather Benjamin Best was listed in the 1830 and 1850 census INDEXES for Fairfield County, SC, but not in the 1840 index. I checked the actual census and found him there. The name was a little hard to read but he, the other family members, and their ages, were exactly as they should have been. MORAL: the indexes save time but there is no substitute for the primary document(s). This example was easy to figure out but I expect people could be easily missed when you rely just on indexes. Speaking of indexes....does anyone have a 1870 Duplin index and willing to look and see if John S. Thompson and wife Rachel are listed. Children were Sarah, James L., Franklin, and Henry. They were in Onslow in 1860 and not there in 1870. I know they came back because Henry married and raised a family in Onslow. I got an e-mail from Linda Bowden in Texas, lbowen@htcomp.net, and she needs some help. "There were three COLE brothers that went to NC in the 1700s, Mark, John and Stephen. I believe one of these brothers, probably Stephen, is the grandfather or father of my Jesse E. Cole b. abt 1814 somewhere in NC. Or at least that is what his census records in Texas say." For the next six weeks, Linda can't do any outside research, she'll have to rely on the computer, but she's at a dead end. Does anybody have anything that might help her? I'm sending what I have, but it isn't much. Dee
I am looking for a person in Duplin County that is buried in Pinecrest Cemetery in Warsaw. All I know is that there is a footstone in the Ezzell plot that has M. E. CSA. If any one has any idea who this man is I would appreciate the information. My husband is compiling a list of all known Confederates from Duplin County and would love to honor this man by including him on the list. Myra

Cheryl, There is nothing at all in my books for Jeremiah or Moses in Duplin Abstracts (only Andrew, Hermon, Nedham, Uriah and Widow). In the very early Provinces abstracts I find only John and John, Jr. (1727 in Bertie County) and although there are lots of Basses in the North Carolina Taxpayers in the late 1700s, there is nothing on your two. The only tiny mention I can find is in the Bladen County Abstracts: page 326: N. C., Bladen County: William Shinglton & wife Mary doth sell in open market to Robert Sims, 100A on the Raft Swamp where Moses Bas (?) old Mill was as so called........12 Nov 1766, for L 10 proc. money........William Shinglton (Seal), Mary Shinglton (Seal), Wit: John Jones. Looking for information about the family of Elias SUTTON, who married Elizabeth Ezzell of Duplin Co before July 1800. Elizabeth is the daughter of Mikel Ezzell of Duplin Co, and is named as an heir in his will of July 1800. Trying to find a connection to a Sarah (Sallie) SUTTON who married Parham Ezell in NC abt 1830. Parham is the son of Frederick Ezell, s/o Mikel Ezzell (and brother to Elizabeth Ezell Sutton). Appreciate any help with these SUTTON/EZZELL lines. Thanks, Sherri Draper
