    3. Thanks for the information, this may be the daughter of Elijah Strahan. He was reported to have moved to that Parish from Copiah Co. MS. after his father died. Did the information say anything about her father or mother. That Parish is just to the west of Washington Parish where my 4th Great-Grandfather Cornelius lived and was a brother to Elijah. That Parish is only 30 miles away from Baton Rouge, LA. where I live. I will try to go to the courthouse. Is that where you got the information? Thank you for writing to me. Larry Strahan

    3. Larry, Welcome to the list, and I am glad you enjoyed our site. I am also the County Coordinator for New Hanover and Pender Counties, which were all divided from the original New Hanover County. There are 5 Counties that divided from New Hanover, with some then dividing from there into other Counties. The Counties are: Bladen, Brunswick, Duplin, Onslow, and Pender. You can find a link to these and all other NC Counties here: http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Encgenweb/county.html I will try to remember to let you know if I come across any of the variants, but I can't promise! : ) I do post notices to the list when I post new info to the site, as well as having the new things posted on the home page. If you haven't tried it already, use the search engine on the home page and it will tell you exactly where these surname variants can be found on the sites I appreciate you spreading the word about the site, and feel free to send any info to me that you wish to contribute to the sites. Have fun and happy researching! 1. Re: [NCDUPLIN] errors on census
    2. Mike & Diane
    3. Suzanne, No problem! I understand about you pointing it out, and I just wanted to make sure that others understood the reasoning behind the errors that they will find on the census records. I have sent people info from the census records before and when they see the blind, deaf and dumb entries on there they practically go ballistic thinking that someone (usually me) have made a mistake as they know their family member wasn't any of these things. Then they think I have given them the wrong info. I found my Grandfather and his family listed as colored and mulatto and I know for a fact he wasn't, BUT that is because of the hurriedness of the census taker, as well as them transposing the first drafts over to the records that we get today. A lot of newbies will think the errors are the person who posted the info until they get used to doing research. I know I did that at first too. : ) You have to be very creative when researching the older documents as there is no telling how you will find someone's name spelled. So, no worries, I didn't take it personally, was just trying to help others that may not know the difference! : ) I am glad to be able to help others with their Duplin research, as I have even found new info on some of my own families since taking over the site. So, in the end it is helping all of us! : ) So, keep sending the info in! 1. Re: [NCDUPLIN] errors on census
    2. Mike & Diane
    3. Suzanne, I copied the transcriptions exactly as they appear on the census records. Yes, you have to be creative with the spellings, because the census takers didn't ask how to spell names, as many couldn't read and write back then. There are a lot of misspellings on all of the census years, and I feel I wouldn't be doing them justice if I corrected the spellings. I wanted to make them as true and as accurate as the census taker wrote them down. You will also notice in later years when they started putting race in that some people are listed as colored when in fact they were white, or Indian when they were Asian, Hispanic, or mulatto if they didn't know what race they were. The census takers were just trying to get through the families as quickly as possible to get them finished. There are countless errors and if I corrected all the ones I find, then when someone goes to the original record to pull the family up they won't be able to find them as they will think the corrected versions are taken directly from the census record itself. Therefore creating more problems. That is why I put on the page that any errors or omissions are on the part of the census takers, and not my own mistakes. I hope this explanation helps... 3. Denise Woodside is the CC for Sampson. She has been attending classes in college, so that may be the reason Sampson hasn't been updated lately. If Sampson does become open I will ask to be assigned to it. In the meantime if you have anything to be posted to Sampson I am sure if you send the info to Denise she will get it added as soon as she can. I am the CC for Duplin, New Hanover and Pender Counties. New Hanover and Pender are very slow sites, as no one wants to step forward and add any info to those pages. I currently don't live in NC but I do try to get there 3 or 4 times a year to do research, and I have great people like are on this list that are always sending in new info to be added to the Duplin site. Hopefully some will step forward soon and start sending in info for New Hanover and Pender. I hope everyone continues to send in info for the Duplin site, and if you have anything for Pender or New Hanover please feel free to send that info to me as well.
