Bebe, the Haw River itself doesn't go anywhere close to Hillsborough. Do you mean the town of Haw River? If so, that piece of old US70 from Hillsborough to Haw River follows an old trading path and a Haw River ford very closely, I am told. The old route from Chapel Hill to Hillsborough (now called Old NC86) was originally the Hillsborough to Fayetteville road. The new NC86 (Airport Road extension - past New Hope Presbyterian Church) was formalized in the 1950's, I believe. When are we going to hear something about that book on your Olde Orange families? I want one of the first autographed copies, if possible! - Richard Bebe and John wrote: > What are the CURRENT descriptors of the Haw River to Hillsborough, please.? 3. Funny thing about that Orange County book!!! I have found that there were far too many diverse subjects involved, on which I have loved researching, and I could not for the life of me figure out to bridge one subject to another! Sooo, I have pulled out my current family pics and have done a book for the young grandchildren concerning their heritage, just hitting the high spots. Then I found that I couldn't inc. my mother and her family plus my father and his family as too much info for one Orange Co. book for us grown ups. Sooo, went ahead and did daddy's side first and it is ready at BLURB.COM I called it KITH AND KIN. His family was in Orange on the Eno, THE PIPER-COX HOUSE, then to Durham when the tilthammer mill washed away in the flood of 1908, moved to Durham were dad was a good football player at Durham High, then they moved to Hillsborough and lived on an old farm in Schley...where Mrs. Phelps has lived since the 40's. Dad grad. at top of his class at Hill. and was class pres. Somewhere along the way, earlier, lived near current Estes-15-501 area where he first noticed my young mother, Billie Atwater Strowd, but he was 26 when the big romance began. Now to inc. lots of Chatham ancestors, plus the one's in current Orange. PLUS, my cousin in Durham and I have dug up direct lines back to Jamestown. Bottom line is...will I live long enough to make an enjoyable book out current Orange and Chatham just on my own lines, plus old time religion, those rascally UNC students, and all that great stuff... Never did answer your question...William Stroud was app. to lay out, or similar, a road from the Haw River, not the village by that name, to Hillsborough in 1777. He lived in the general area of Moses Atwater whose deeds, as I recall, mention the Haw river. Any ideas appreciated!! AND would I have gone to Hillsborough from C.H. as a child in the 40's to Hillsborough out the Airport Rd??? same as Columbia St., right? I have been to New Hope Ch. because of Johnston and Blackwood but don't recall HOW we left C.H.
