    1. [NCDOGS] genealogy meeting in Alexandria, VA tomorrow
    2. Richard Ellington
    3. Anyone live close to DC? If so, you may be interested in attending this upcoming meeting: On Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the Mount Vernon Genealogical Society (MVGS) will meet in room 112 of the Hollin Hall Senior Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The meeting will start at 1:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The meeting will feature a presentation entitled "Buried Births: Finding Birth Information in Federal Records." The program will be presented by Susannah Brooks. Susannah E. Brooks is vice president/membership chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society (MAGS) and a volunteer genealogy staff aide at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC. As a researcher she specializes in German, 19th and 20th century general US research, and using bank records in genealogical research. She has lectured on topics related to German and German-American genealogical research, using bank records for genealogical research, and basic genealogical research skills. She has written articles that have appeared in Der Kurier (newsletter of the Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society) and Roots-Key (newsletter of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles). Determining the place of birth is often the key to finding additional information about our ancestor, but most federal records give only the state or foreign country in which a person was born. This presentation, through the use of many examples, will show how one may be able to find the exact place of birth in federal records. Emphasis will be on looking at all the details in each record to find the information or clues we need as researchers. The Hollin Hall Senior Center is located 4 miles south of Alexandria just off Fort Hunt Road at 1500 Shenandoah Road in Alexandria, Virginia. MVGS is a nonprofit organization and has over 260 members residing in Alexandria, Fort Belvoir, the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, Montgomery, and Prince Georges, as well as several states. Additional information about the meeting and MVGS can be found at http://www.MVGenealogy.org/. Any questions about the program should be directed to Harold McClendon at 703-360-0920. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K.
