We were talking very specifically about Orange County, and he was reading titles to me from what he said were marriage bond microfilm holdings for Orange County, and the dates started in 1752. I just checked the Guide to Research Materials in the North Carolina State Archives, County Records. and the dates listed for Marriage Bonds for Orange County were1779-1794.
