I think you put your finger on what often keeps our searches confined within our national boundaries, especially in the case of a foreign language we are not familiar with, not simply a culture that is foreign to us. Some of those old microfilms were so formidable to me that it stopped my German research cold and I have never really caught as much as I should to find success with that branch of my family. However I have learned much more about online resources for research, people in Germany who are multilingual who have been endlessly helpful, and locations of data that is meaningful to me.
