According to William S Powell's North Carolina Gazetteer, Back Creek arises in western Alamance County and flows southeast into Great Alamance Creek. Another Back Creek arises in western Orange County and flows southwest into Alamance County into Haw River. This Back Creek on an old map is also known as Buffalo Creek. There is no entry for the other two creeks but a creek called Stag Creek which rises in northeastern Alamance County and flows south into Back Creek. This Gazetteer is a valuable source of information for people researching deeds and land grants which almost always mentioned what waters they were near or on. It is available in the North Carolina section of most bookstores. The Alamance Register of Deeds office or the local history section of the Burlington public library may have maps which more accurately show the location of these creeks. Do the names "Back Creek", "Suggs Creek" or "Stage Creek" mean anything to any of you? Apparently they are in the Haw River area. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K. William Blackwood was an early settler in Orange. Some of his land....and he had a bunch, was on Buffalo Creek...which as I understand it flows pretty close to current Greensboro in Guilford Co. Thanks for reminding me, Jim. I have Powell's gazetteer at home but I was at my office when I got the request. The gazetteer is a fabulous resource. - Richard Jim Richmond wrote: > According to William S Powell's North Carolina Gazetteer, Back Creek arises > in western Alamance County and flows southeast into Great Alamance Creek. > Another Back Creek arises in western Orange County and flows southwest into > Alamance County into Haw River.
