Below is an excerpt from another list regarding NARA service records. It has some interesting information in it that some of you may want to know about. -Ava Some time ago there was a discussion about military records. I live in St. Louis and last week dropped off a request at NARA for military records. The request is for a collateral relative so I do not know the branch of service during WWI, but can now assume it was probably the Army. I received the following email which might explain the delay some of you had obtaining records. "I talked to you today when you came into our facility requesting the service record for Edward Allen Salisbury. I was able to find a service number with the information you gave me. I ordered three records for the veteran. There will be a delay with two of the records. They were affected by the 1973 fire at our facility. These two records will go to our Preservation Lab for treatment. This process takes a couple of weeks, but sometimes could take up to 6 to 8 weeks. Once we get these treated records in the Archival Research Room, we will contact you via telephone to set up an appointment to view them. I am sorry for the delay" Also, you may be interested in the additional information provided: "They are in the process of building our new facilty north of I-270 off of Dunn Road. We anticipate moving into this facility May 2011. We will need to get all the records from our sites around St. Louis to the new facility. After that point, they will ship all of the Civil War draft records here from the regional facilities. I'm not sure when they plan on these shipments, but it would be sometime after that. The records are currently housed at the regional facilities, with records from a state at the corresponding regional facility that covers that state."
