Chatham County was founded in 1771 from Orange County so the records before that are elsewhere, in Orange County until the timeit was founded and then in the counties from which Orange was created before that. The deeds, wills and other such records were in new annexes to the courthouse and not destroyed in the fire. Old such records are on microfilm in the State Library. The Chatham County history museum was in the courthouse and the materials there likely will turn out to have been destroyed by the fire. There seem to have been several Thomas Hart's in Orange County before and at the time of the Revolution. Thomas Hart, Sheriff of Orange County, entrepreneur and great uncle of Thomas Hart Benton, was one. Quaker Thomas Hart who went to Georgia with many others following the Regulator unrest was another. Jesse Benton, an attorney in Orange County, was the witness for my ancestor's marriage to Nancy Rutherford in 1782. My Andrew Griffin must have known him fairly well. My understanding is that Jesse Benton bought Thomas Hart's mill which has a historical marker. Jesse's son was Thomas Hart Benton. My Andrew Griffin was a regulator and was also in the Revolutionary War. I have no idea who his first wife was. He was from Tyrrell County by way of Anson County. Thanks Jim, my ancestor may have been Quaker Thomas Hart, but that may have been his son - I know that another son of my Thomas Hart went to Georgia to claim land offered to Quakers by the state. I will try to find in the records you mention.
