Alvis Jesse Bynum, the founder, along w another gentleman, of the burning court house in Pittsboro, NC, was g grandson of old Luke Bynum and his wf., Martha Patterson, dau. of one of the first 8 justices of old Orange Co. Alvis was marr, to Susan HEADEN, dau. of Aaron Gaston Headen, merchant along w his son in law, Alvis, and Mary Edwards Rives, also of Chatham Co. Aaron attended brand new Wake Forest at the age of twelve! Susan (Headen) Bynum was a sister of my great grandmother, Fannie Harris Headen, wf. of merchant and banker of Chapel Hill,, Robert Lee Strowd of Strowd Hill, East Franklin St. in Chapel Hill....my grandfather, Bruce Strowd's parents. Alvis had interviewed one of his Bynum uncle's years ago, in the late 1800's, concerning his ancestor, Luke Bynum.... UNCLE SAID THAT THE BYNUM'S WERE "GAME AND PLUCKY"...let's hope this helps in the minds of the good Chatham folks toward the reconstruction of this handsome and historical building. Does anyone know where the records, etc. for what is now Chatham Co. are for the period between 1754 and 1800? My ancestor Thomas Hart reportedly lived in what is now Chatham Co. when it was still Orange Co. from 1754/5 until his death, but he was born abt. 1685/6 and died before 1786. Thanks. John, any available records (copies only, no originals) from 1754 to 1771 should reside in Orange County (Hillsborough), because it was still part of Orange. Anything from 1771 forward should be in the government services building in Pittsboro, on the roundabout behind the old Chatham courthouse. What, exactly, are you looking for? Any remaining original county records are most likely available in the NC Archives but they may be available only on microfilm. - Richard John Miller wrote: > Does anyone know where the records, etc. for what is now Chatham Co. > are for the period between 1754 and 1800?
