    3. Hi Shari, I agree with Richard that the taping or real time broadcast of Helen Leary's presentation would not be possible without Helen's permission. However, as the new webmaster, I do intend to start researching ways in which to broadcast our own D-OGS monthly meetings (and maybe even the Computer Interest Group meetings as well) to those folks who are out of state or unable to attend the meetings. I believe the board is in the process of trying to secure new meeting locations right now, that include at least good wifi connections ;-) so once this is settled, I'm sure we can get some pod casts up and running soon enough. I Skype for free with my grand children. It only takes to computers with audio and video. I think there are even ways to capture the video and save it for future viewing. I don't know if there would be the assets or interest you might not be the one I should pose the question to. Could you bring it up at the next meeting to see if there is an interest for those of us out of state. Regards, Shari

    2. When Helen Leary, as well as other speakers, speak at the NGS convention each year, they are taped and the tapes are available for purchase. Why is it that no organization, other than the NGS, seems to be able to do the same with their speakers? Could it be that they don't ask? Or do the speakers make an exception for the NGS? Or is there some other reason? And, if the speakers wanted extra compensation, could they be promised a percentage of the profit of the sales of their tapes? Likewise, thespeakers at the NGS convention provide a several page summary which is published in the convention syllabus. Could our speakers be asked to provide such a syllabus for their talks at our meetings for publication on our web site? Or, could the speakers be asked to provide hand-outs or copies of their slides and those made available on the web site? -- Dan Durham -----Original Message----- From: Ginger Smith <grs3275@yahoo.com> To: ncdogs@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, Mar 10, 2010 6:15 am Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] Helen Leary speaking at Wake County Gen Society Hi Shari, I agree with Richard that the taping or real time broadcast of Helen Leary's resentation would not be possible without Helen's permission. 3. I am also curious about whether or not restrictions exist that would prevent our society from purchasing some of the recorded NGS CDs and then making them available to our members on a borrowing system, similar to a library. As a member, I'd be happy to pay a small fee to borrow a CD. Each CD is sufficiently expensive that most people would think twice before purchasing one for their own use, but if the cost could be shared among numerous interested parties, it becomes much more attractive. It would be a great service to our members as well. Alternatively, could we set up a system whereby individual DOGS members might personally purchase one or two CDs of particular interest to them, then, after viewing them, donate them to a free "library" within DOGS? Accomplishes the same objective of allowing access to many of the talks without a large investment in CDs by any one person. 3. Dan, you pose several valid questions. The NGS (or other sponsoring entity) have exclusive rights to any presentations made under their auspices. We have no way of knowing what arrangements they have made with the speakers to disburse the proceeds from the recorded presentations. Most of the presentations made at the NGS and other conferences are presentations that the presenters make in other locations, for a fee, on a regular basis. This is how they make the bulk of their income, I am sure. The syllabus is provided as part of the fee you pay to attend. It is not free. From time to time, D-OGS speakers have provided us with handouts or other items of interest in conjunction with their appearance at our meetings. If I am the person who makes the initial contact for a speaker, I typically ask if they have handouts or other materials that we can share with the membership. If supplementary materials have been made available to us, we have posted them on the D-OGS website with the newsletters, et al. For instance, I have submitted slides I used for a program I gave last year. Most of these individuals are doing this for free. D-OGS does not regularly pay our speakers. We are very grateful that they share their time and expertise. The Helen Leary presentation is being sponsored by Wake County Gen Society. We are invited guests. If someone wishes to contact them about recording or simul-cast transmission, here is their website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncwcgs/index.htm. I do not feel comfortable doing that myself. - Richard danwdurham@aol.com wrote: > When Helen Leary, as well as other speakers, speak at the NGS convention each year, they are taped and the tapes are available for purchase.
