Carol ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There's always something happening at the Orange County Historical Museum! This Month's Events Heritage Preservation Annual Photo Contest: Exhibit on Display; Winners Announced The entrants will be on display at the Museum from Wednesday, May 5 until Friday, June 4th. The theme this year, Historic Commercial Buildings, allows entrants to highlight old buildings throughout the cities, crossroads and rural areas of the County—thus, bridging the past to the present and to the future. Winners will be announced on May 28, at the Hillsborough Last Friday Event by the Courthouse at 6:15. Upcoming Events (http://www.nchumanities.org/index.html) June 13: North Carolina Mills Presentation and Historical Foundation Annual Dinner Do you have old mill photographs of you or your parents? On Sunday, June 13 th at the Depot at Hillsborough Station on 246 South Nash Street, at 4pm bring your mill memorabilia and have a chance to share your stories! This event is sponsored by the Hillsborough Historic District Commission and Historical Foundation of Hillsborough and Orange County. Road Scholar speaker, Dr. Roxanne Newton will present Hard Times in the Mill: Working Lives Past and Present. Dr. Newton is the daughter and granddaughter of North Carolina textile mill workers. In addition to the speaker, we encourage participants to bring their own mill memorabilia so we can digitize and protect the items for the enjoyment of future generations. This portion of the program will be free and open to the public. This project is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Hungry for more? Well at 5:30pm stay after our Mill event and participate in the Foundation's Annual Dinner. The dinner will be 20 dollars per person and tickets will be sold in advance. The dinner will be a buffet that will include three courses and wine. This dinner fundraiser for the Foundation will not only include dinner, but also we will announce the winner of our Engstrom Award. This award is given to an outstanding volunteer in preserving our history. Presentation: 4:00 PM, Free; Dinner: 5:30 PM, $20 in advance at the Museum. June 18: Leland Little Auction & Estate Sales Gallery At 3:00 P.M. Leland Little Auction will host "The Artistic Legacy of Thomas Day: Master Craftsman and Free Man of Color" given by Patricia Phillips Marshall, curator of decorative arts for the North Carolina Executive Mansion and North Carolina Museum of History. Come to the Museum from 6-9pm to see the participants and winners of the competition. June 26: participate in our Ears to You fundraiser. Fill your stomach with grilled corn on the cob and hot dogs and support the Foundation at the same time. All proceeds go to the Historical Foundation of Hillsborough and Orange County. July 30: Come see Almost Andy performed by local Art Fettig. This skit showcases North Carolina native Andy Griffith. All Last Friday events are free and open to the public from 6 to 9pm. Family Fun Days June 12: Come to the Museum from 1-3pm to receive lessons on how to weave and even get a chance to use a 100 year old loom. July 10: Participate in Native American Day from 1-3pm and learn about the lifestyle of the southeast woodland people by special demonstrations of tools and weapons by Blackfeather Jeffries and women’s life talks by Lynette Jeffries.
