Good point, Jim! So, let's go with either spelling for our collection of materials. Do any of you have the name Markum in your family tree? If so, we'd love to receive any stories, documents and/or photos that you might have. Right now we have only an obituary for Molly Markum, who died in Durham in 1941. Please respond directly to us at TradingPath@aol.com. Let's see what we can piece together for the December issue! I don't have any Markhams by any spelling in my database,, however I seem to remember two residences on Cleveland St. in the vicinity of First Baptist Church where Markhams lived. There was a Mrs. Markham who lived across the street (about where the fire station sits today) who had roomers and boarders (when have you heard that phrase?). Miss Juanita Ross, Public Health Nurse in East Durham, lived there when I was quite young (she later moved down to East Durham), but she rented and ate with Mrs. Markham. Then I seem to remember that there was an older house right next to the church on the corner that an older Mr. Markham lived. To the best of my memory, I don't think I ever saw him and the place always looked spooky to me. (Older in the late 1930's-early 1940's---your guess is as good as mine on what age person, especially since I don't remember ever actually seeing him.) I think the house has been gone for a number of years and maybe the church uses that lot as a parking lot. Durham deeds from that era might provide some info on these folks. I'd be interested in any info on this, just to satisfy my curiosity.
