To All List Members, Recently there was an exchange on this list, concerning the Civil War, that I am sure concerned or offended many of our members. As list moderator, I immediately responded to the author of the remarks (individually) by pointing out that they were insulting to many and asking that the topic not be further discussed on this list. After a brief additional email exchange with me, the individual making these original remarks has unsubscribed from the list. However, I feel remiss in not having made a more public statement to all about the unacceptable tenor and nature of the sentiments expressed. My goal was to avoid an ugly and protracted public exchange on the list, but the result, I fear, was that many were left wondering if such remarks were considered generally acceptable. Let me assure everyone that they are not, and let me apologize for not saying so more publicly on the list when they were first made. Our society, by its very nature, proudly includes individuals of diverse backgrounds and persuasions. We come together in an effort to help one another explore our personal pasts and, in so doing, better understand our collective history. This can only be successfully accomplished if we take great care to maintain open-mindedness, stick to facts, and check our personal prejudices at the door. Behavior to the contrary will not be tolerated, at least not for very long, on this list. Ava
