    3. Ginger: I think another tutorial in how members can communicate "privately" would be helpful. When I get a message my inclination is to hit the reply button, not to try to figure out to communicate "privately". From some of the traffic on the site I don't think I am the only offender. It must be hard for someone as savvy about computers as you to understand this but for many of us using a computer is a little like the Sorcerer's Apprentice using a broom. I have been working the past 6 months to transition the old website to the new website. This has been a learning curve because we have been implementing new features like putting the Trading Path journal and the newsletter online. We have also been creating individual member user accounts in order to keep some of the website content open to "members only" - that is, dues paying members only. Some people have not been receiving the emails from me that contain their user name and password and therefore cannot log into the website. This happens either because the email went to their spam folder or their trash folder. I apologize for sending emails out to the entire list. Unfortunately most people do not know who I am nor do they recognize my email address, so the only way that I can communicate with them is through the email list serve. Otherwise, my email to them would go to their spam folder or to their trash. In every correspondence I send to the entire list, I do ask that people email me back PRIVATELY, however, I cannot guarantee they do so. If they email me through the list serve, then I respond back through the list serve or I let them know that I emailed them privately. I will try to limit the amount of emails I send to individual members through the listserve. Please remember we are still going through several transitions here at D-OGS and we appreciate your patience during this time of transition. 3. OK, Jim, as list moderator, it is actually my job to periodically remind people to only use the entire list when the entire list could potentially be interested in the conversation. That said, I must admit with a red face that just the other day I forgot to check the email address and mistakenly emailed something to the entire list that was really meant for one individual. It happens. As Ginger has explained, in her case she is using the entire list to contact individuals when it is unavoidable and the only method available to her. We'll just all have to have a little patience during the web transitioning process. For the purposes of a tutorial: (1) When you are initiating an email thread, or when you receive an email from a D-OGS member on the list and want to respond, first decide whether you want to email to the entire list or to just one individual. Only email/respond to the entire list if your comments add to a discussion of general interest to numerous members on the list or benefit numerous members in some way. For example, if you are telling everyone about a presentation on a genealogical topic that you happened to find out about or an article on a genealogical topic that you thought might be useful to our members, by all means email to the list. However, if you are asking a member if they can give you a ride to the next meeting, that email should go only to the member in question. (2) Now here is the tricky part. :-) If you are responding to a list email and only want to respond to its sender, not to the entire list, DON'T JUST HIT REPLY. Hit reply, but then REPLACE the list address (ncdogs@rootsweb.com) in the "To" box with the email address of the sender, which you should find up on the top of the email that they sent (generally it looks like: "on behalf of xxxxxxx[THEIR EMAIL ADDRESS]"). THEN hit send! Not complicated, just hard to remember to think about. Hope this helps those of you running around after a lot of brooms!
