A day in early Orange County...by Bebe Johns Fox We are fortunate to be able to take a peek into the new Towne at Enoe on a Sunday in 1752, as a traveling salesman, from the well established area of Suffolk, tidewater Virginia, jotted his impressions into his account book. They are delightful to read, now that great strides have been made, but Mr. Saunders no doubt spread the word that Orange was just about uninhabitable. The list of the first eight county justices were listed on page one of the Orange Count Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. They were , among others, John Patterson, Mark Morgan, John Gray, James Watson, and Marmaduke Kimbrough. John Saunders Account Book “...James Watson (a first Justice) was kind enough to give us some corn for our horses and to put us into the new cut road for Orange Court House (current Hillsboro). In five miles we got to Eno River, “the westernmost branch of the Newse and then had a verry bad road and no water for along way but in riding fifteen miles got to Orange Court House where was Sunday and people assembled and their appearance did not prejudice me much in their favour but I soon understood they were Justices of the Court wch dispatched our fears a little and they soon left us and we had pretty good (illegible). Mr. Kimbro (justice Marmaduke Kimbrough) keeping Ordinary but the houses excessive bad being built of logs and then laid verry verry far from close that our lodging was verry airy and verry light notwithstanding we had never a window. (illegible) wanted to head on to the Pee Dee but horse had lost shoe so we back toward the Eno.” The diary, now safe at the North Carolina Archives, was found in an abandoned doctor's office in Edenton, North Carolina, by a Union soldier, in August of 1863. Also found were two old Revolutionary muskets with two thimbles of powder and twenty two buckshot. by bebe -----Original Message----- From: bebenjohn@aol.com To: ncdogs@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, Feb 4, 2010 10:23 pm Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] February 2010 newsletter now online JAMES WATSON...MORE TO COME I didn't write this... There is an old record, in pleas and quarter sessions, I think, regarding this. If I sd. Moriah Rd. I shoulfd not have..it's Moriah CHURCH. The Patterson cem. is across from the church on Erwin Rd. the part that is still in Orange Co. but almost into Durham Co. Daddy was at the Methodist Home on Erwin in Durham bef. he died. The Hillsborough powers sent some local fellows out to Patterson's to greet and accompany Gov Tryon and his men into Hillsboro. Justice John Patterson was my grandmother's ancestor as one of his daughter's m. Luke Bynum from whom I descend twice through Bruce's1st wf., Mattie Atwater. I don't know which road wascalled the Oxford Rd. I guess whichever rd. went to the county seat of Granville...on an old map. What would be the best way to ask if any members have any information on Andrew Griffin who had land on the Flatt River? He was a Regulator and Jesse Benton was a witness for his second marriage to Nancy Rutherford. He lived near a Robert Gray, Thomas Griffin and Patrick Rutherford. He paid taxes in Hillsborough, and served on many juries. His daughter Mary Griffin married a James Watkins. He died in Salisbury, Rowan, NC, in 1800 and left a will. He sold his land to James Watson. Hi, Ginny & Richard.... In case, you didn't know tonight from 9:30-10pm, UNC-TV is airing a local area documentary called "Bern and New Bern: 300 Years Later." The following link provides lots of info about the program. http://www.unctv.org/bern/index.html Hope it's helpful to all those with ancestors in that city. Maybe producer Rob Holliday would be willing to speak at a D-OGS event. Enjoy, Nerissa P-S: This program is followed by an American Experience show called "Harlem in Montmartre." Al, I looked at the UNC NC Maps collection and found an "Oxford Road" listed on a 1913 map of Hillsborough. It appears to be the present route of Saint Mary's Road going northeast out of town. Here is the URL of that map: http://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/ncmaps&CISOPTR=492&CISOBOX=1&REC=10 This is a great collection of maps. I suggest that you browse around it. The homepage for their full collection is http://www.lib.unc.edu/maps/ you might try looking at the Trading Path Association website: http://www.tradingpath.org/. They have a "maps" section on the sidebar with some great old maps. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K. The difficulty is identifying the specific "Hillsboro Oxford" route. In my transcribing of the road and bridge records of both Orange and Granville County, was the use of certain "route" names. The 1808 and 1833 maps show the numerous roads from Hillsboro to Oxford. Numerous being three key routes. The Flat and Little River fords are the key elements in locating the routes - for Orange County and the Tar River for Granville. The actual roads today are similar to the old roads, mainly at the river crossings (bridges). Do you have the 1833 map? Is there a specific location or plantation on this route or river crossing that could help "zero in" to the specific route (which of the three)? The latest D-OGS newsletter is now online. Check it out for any items of interest - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncdogs/memberspage/ The next D-OGS monthly meeting is coming up tomorrow evening. This D-OGS Meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, 3 February, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Orange County Public Library on 137 West Margaret Lane in Hillsborough. Here is a map: http://server2.co.orange.nc.us/locations/index.asp?ServiceID=23 The program will be presented by Lucinda Munger, Orange County Library Director. The program will be a grand tour of the new library facility. Come join us for this inside look at all the new things (and some old things) that the new library building has to offer. The old NC Room collection from the old library on Tryon Street has been relocated to the 2nd floor of the new building. Come see where those research materials are now housed. We will be meeting in the main meeting room on the first floor. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K.
