As the next D-OGS meeting will deal with genetics and genealogy, you may be interested in looking at the HHS's "My Family Health Portrait Tool". Used in conjunction with your written genealogy it can show you patterns in health in your family tree that could be helpful to you. It's simple and very interesting. _http://www.hhs.gov/familyhistory/portrait/index.html_ (http://www.hhs.gov/familyhistory/portrait/index.html) Carol

Some of our members may be interested in this new offering: Dear Historical Publications Shop Customer: The Historical Publications Section of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History announces publication of a new, revised edition of Native Carolinians: The Indians of North Carolina, by Theda Perdue and Christopher Arris Oakley. First published in 1985 and reprinted five times since that time, Native Carolinians is one our most popular titles. For this new edition, Dr. Perdue selected Dr. Christopher A. Oakley, associate professor of history at East Carolina University, to revise her original study. The chapters on the Cherokees, the Lumbees, and Native Carolinians today have been expanded to include important developments in these topics over the past quarter century. A number of new illustrations have been added, and a detailed index now makes the text more accessible. To learn more about this important, new book (and to order a copy), please visit: http://nc-historical-publications.stores.yahoo.net/3451.html Thank you for your interest in the Historical Publications Section of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. Missouri has now added death certificates for 1959 to their death certificate data base which previously had only 1910 - 1958. http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#search Ginny
Jesse Benton, an attorney in Orange County, was the witness for my ancestor's marriage to Nancy Rutherford in 1782. My Andrew Griffin must have known him fairly well. My understanding is that Jesse Benton bought Thomas Hart's mill which has a historical marker. Jesse's son was Thomas Hart Benton. My Andrew Griffin was a regulator and was also in the Revolutionary War. I have no idea who his first wife was. He was from Tyrrell County by way of Anson County. Chatham County was founded in 1771 from Orange County so the records before that are elsewhere, in Orange County until the timeit was founded and then in the counties from which Orange was created before that. The deeds, wills and other such records were in new annexes to the courthouse and not destroyed in the fire. Old such records are on microfilm in the State Library. The Chatham County history museum was in the courthouse and the materials there likely will turn out to have been destroyed by the fire. There seem to have been several Thomas Hart's in Orange County before and at the time of the Revolution. Thomas Hart, Sheriff of Orange County, entrepreneur and great uncle of Thomas Hart Benton, was one. Quaker Thomas Hart who went to Georgia with many others following the Regulator unrest was another. John, any available records (copies only, no originals) from 1754 to 1771 should reside in Orange County (Hillsborough), because it was still part of Orange. Anything from 1771 forward should be in the government services building in Pittsboro, on the roundabout behind the old Chatham courthouse. What, exactly, are you looking for? Any remaining original county records are most likely available in the NC Archives but they may be available only on microfilm. - Richard John Miller wrote: > Does anyone know where the records, etc. for what is now Chatham Co. > are for the period between 1754 and 1800?
