Ava, thank you for clarifying that the opinions in the earlier exchange do not represent the attitudes of members of D-OGS. I appreciate your responding as the list administrator. Carol
I too thank you, Ava, for your response to this. A most unfortunate and embarrassing exchange. To All List Members, Recently there was an exchange on this list, concerning the Civil War, that I am sure concerned or offended many of our members. As list moderator, I immediately responded to the author of the remarks (individually) by pointing out that they were insulting to many and asking that the topic not be further discussed on this list. I posted a message to the list about this Saturday's meeting, but I don't see it anywhere, so in case I overlooked it please excuse the second post. We will meeting Saturday AM, June 12, at 9:00 AM in the small conference room of the Chapel Hill library, so bring your mug of coffee and bagel or whatever and join us. Bring your laptop if you have one and let's talk about the best way to use our email systems for our genealogy. What do you do with messages or newslist entries you want to retrieve again for your research? Do you have a special cataloging system, or location for them? How can you find them five years later? Come share your ideas with us. Recently on this list there was a comment about Footnote and I thought that we could discuss that as well. Some sites are easier to search than others, so if you've had some success with Footnote and are a subscriber, perhaps you can give us some pointers. Carol
I received the following information from D-OGS member Lucie Johnson. Call the contact number, if you are interested in attending: The Carolina Meadows Genealogy Club has contracted with Ben Franklin to lead a 3 hour learning experience entitled "Collecting and Organizing Your Family History". It will be Monday, June 28, 1:30 to 4:30 PM at Carolina Meadows, 100 Whippoorwill Lane, Chapel Hill (Do not use GPS) Registration is limited to 50 persons and the invitation is extended to non-residents. There is no charge. Pre-registration is required by calling or leaving a message at 942-7199. In addition to some basics of family history research, the learning objectives will include demonstrating either by use of pen and paper or family history software how to organize and use information found online; discussing current and future trends in genealogical research as well as identifying and accessing the most useful free family history computer sites. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K. Lynne, I agree that it was not very civil. I typically call it the "War Between the States" or the "War of Northern Aggression" but the Footnote folks call their collection the "Civil War" collection so that is why I used it. Their collection does include records for both Confederate and Union troops. - Richard LWBelvin@aol.com wrote: > Richard, > > Thanks, but I do not have any Civil War Veterans in my family but do have > lots of Confederate - War Between the States Veterans! Richard, Thanks, but I do not have any Civil War Veterans in my family but do have lots of Confederate - War Between the States Veterans! There was noting CIVIL about that war!. I am a Southener first and an American second. I am getting ready to celebrate June 25th the day the Indians killed George Armstrong Custer! Indians fighting terriorism since 1492. Also --- Custer wore and arrow shirt!! I an not Indian but apprecite that they managed to finish what the Confederates did not do. (Forget HEll) I am a loyal American in all wars but that one as my family fought in all of them. Lynne Belvin
I just got a notice from footnote.com that they are allowing free access to their Civil War collection of documents, photos and maps for the month of June. If you have Civil War veterans, you may want to look them up. The URL is http://go.footnote.com/civilwar_records/ -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K.
