Ginger: Most of the older Durham County public records, original and microfilmed, are available in the North Carolina Department of Archives collection but I do not see birth records listed there. If the Durham County Health Department was in existence before 1913, it may have kept records of births. Ginger, prior to 1913 NC did not legislate the exact procedure for counties to collect and maintain vital statistics. Many counties had been keeping ledger books of births, deaths, marriages, etc. but they each did it in their own fashion. I am surprised that Durham County does not have anything. I seem to remember that they have some older records in the Public Health records collections. - Richard Ginger Smith wrote: > Does anyone know where to find birth certificates from 1911 in Durham County? Ginger: I doubt you will find public records of North Carolina births prior to 1913 when they became required. Bibles, church records, and newspaper accounts would be where I would look for births before then. Thank you Ava. I have just discovered a trick on my computer that may be on others as well. If I put the cursor on the sender's e-mail address and RIGHT click on it, a menu will appear which allows me to limit my response to that person alone and not to the entire list. Saves the onerous task of trying to type a whole e-mail address, a process in which I sometimes get lost and have to repeat several times to get it right. Jim -----Original Message----- From: ncdogs-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncdogs-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ava Nackman Sent: Wednesday, June 23, 2010 2:51 PM To: ncdogs@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] User Accounts on Website OK, Jim, as list moderator, it is actually my job to periodically remind people to only use the entire list when the entire list could potentially be interested in the conversation. That said, I must admit with a red face that just the other day I forgot to check the email address and mistakenly emailed something to the entire list that was really meant for one individual. It happens. As Ginger has explained, in her case she is using the entire list to contact individuals when it is unavoidable and the only method available to her. We'll just all have to have a little patience during the web transitioning process. For the purposes of a tutorial: (1) When you are initiating an email thread, or when you receive an email from a D-OGS member on the list and want to respond, first decide whether you want to email to the entire list or to just one individual. Only email/respond to the entire list if your comments add to a discussion of general interest to numerous members on the list or benefit numerous members in some way. For example, if you are telling everyone about a presentation on a genealogical topic that you happened to find out about or an article on a genealogical topic that you thought might be useful to our members, by all means email to the list. However, if you are asking a member if they can give you a ride to the next meeting, that email should go only to the member in question. (2) Now here is the tricky part. :-) If you are responding to a list email and only want to respond to its sender, not to the entire list, DON'T JUST HIT REPLY. Hit reply, but then REPLACE the list address (ncdogs@rootsweb.com) in the "To" box with the email address of the sender, which you should find up on the top of the email that they sent (generally it looks like: "on behalf of xxxxxxx[THEIR EMAIL ADDRESS]"). THEN hit send! Not complicated, just hard to remember to think about. Hope this helps those of you running around after a lot of brooms! I wonder if any of you local D-OGS members happen to attend St. Matthews Church in Hillsborough? I've been in contact with someone who has some interesting information and I'd like to talk with a local member if we have one among us. Thanks, Carol

I am Mary Lou Williams -a member of Dogs. My records state that I paid in Oct 2007 for three years dues. I just discovered your message of April 12th in a cache of DOGS messages. I am unsure of its meaning in terms of my membership except I no longer receive e-mails. Could you please bring me up to date as what I should do. Hi Mary, I have forwarded your questions on to our webmaster (who can help you to understand the password) and our membership chair (who can confirm for me that you are indeed a member in good standing). I was thinking from your email that somehow you had gotten deleted from the email list for DOGS, but I just went and looked, and your email is on my list, so you should certainly be receiving any emails that are sent to the list. There aren't lots of them, none on some days. Are you sure that you haven't gotten ANY over the last few weeks, or am I misunderstanding your question? Richard & Ginger, Here is the June CIG Summary for the newsletter. The notice for the July CIG meeting: The D-OGS Computer Interest Group (CIG) for July 10, 2010 will be held in the downstairs conference room at the Chapel Hill Public Library. The topic to be presented by Peg Edwards will be "Using Excel Spreadsheets to Assist In Your Genealogical Research". If you have made use of spreadsheets for your genealogy, bring along some examples and add to the discussion. Please continue to send me your web sites of interest as you come across them. There are new sites showing up every day, and genealogists all across the country spend hours of volunteer time transcribing and indexing records for all of us to use. Send along your favorites to share with the group. Carol Boggs _Hubbellgen@aol.com_ (mailto:Hubbellgen@aol.com)
