Thank you Richard for all you do to keep members informed. I loved that happy picture of you and fellow HS graduates ....picture on the front of the Carrboro paper I picked up someplace. I am looking forward to the book. You might be interested that Elizabeth Ryan (who wrote about Carrboro in her Orange Co History several years ago) has completed a wonderful book on the history (25 years) of Carolina Meadows....it will be available at a book signing in September. She lives across the street from me. -----Original Message----- From: Richard Ellington <rke@email.unc.edu> To: D-OGS closed list <NCDOGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Aug 9, 2010 12:04 am Subject: [NCDOGS] D-OGS member passes away D-OGS member Robert Story passed away on August 3, 2010, after a sudden llness. I've just learned that we do not have a place for the CIG to meet this month, or potentially for several more months in the Chapel Hill Library. They say, "...we can not use the library because of structural issues. The elevator is questionable and the HVAC system is ready to die. They say that we can't meet there any until at least late Fall and probably longer." Is it possible that one of you in Durham County might locate a potential meeting place in one of their libraries? I live in Orange County so that is not an option for me. If we do not find a meeting place in the next two or three days we will have to cancel this Saturday's meeting and possibly future meetings as well. Thanks for any help you can provide. Carol
The CIG will meet on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM in the small conference room at the Chapel Hill Public Library. Midsummer is a good time to take it easy and not spend too much energy on unnecessary things, so this month we will discuss freeware and shareware for the genealogist found in a recent issue of "Internet Genealogy". We'll also go through the list of new sites or interesting news sent to us by the group. There's always plenty of great stuff that comes across my desk and so we'll look at it together. If you're curious about the role of technology in genealogy or want to make your research a bit easier, come join us. You don't have to belong to D-OGS to enjoy the CIG and we all seem to say every week that we learned several things at the meeting so you've nothing to lose. You might get a few laughs out of the meeting as well, that's not unheard of. All in all, a pleasant way to spend a hot August Saturday with folks of like mind. If you can send me the URLs of some of the better sites you've seen lately that would be a great help. We all seem to look at different topics and this is a great way to share them with one another. Carol Boggs
I'm so sorry to hear that. Thank you for letting us know. Come to the Seymour Senior Center on Homestead Road in Chapel Hill this evening at 7:00pm. If you have any genealogical (books, magazines, CD/DVDs, etc.) or computer materials/supplies that you no longer need or want, bring them along to put on our Swap Meet table. The Senior Center closes promptly at 9:00pm, so please keep your "Show and Tell" short so everyone that want to speak will have time. I am really behind on several projects, including the newsletter. I thought I had better get this message out for next week's meeting: This month’s regular D-OGS Meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, 4 August, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center on Homestead Road in Chapel Hill. Here is a map: http://server2.co.orange.nc.us/locations/index.asp?LocationID=67 Our program will be our annual “Show and Tell”. Have you found that missing relative? Have you broken through the “brick wall” you have been banging into for years? Do you have some recommendations for new data sources? Bring your best stories about what you have been doing over the last year. We will draw numbers to see who get to go first. Please keep your comments to a few minutes so others will have a chance to speak, also. It has been suggested that we continue our "swap meet" theme at the "show and tell". If you have any genealogy materials (books, CDs, forms, etc.) or anything else that has been of good use to you but you no longer need, bring it with you to the meeting. We will set up a table to collect these materials so others can help themselves. We will need to leave the Senior Center promptly by 9 p.m., when they close. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= >>> >>> Richard K. Vol 20, no. 1 and vol 19, no. 4 are also still available to view and download on the website. Please email me privately at grs3275@yahoo.com if you have any problems accessing the journal. A recent article in the Chapel Hill Paper (July 7) noted that the Hillsborough Historic District Commission and Mayor Tom Stevens presented the 2010 Preservation Awards to Elizabeth Read the executive director of the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough for leadership in preservation, and Architect Fred Stewart for excellence in compatible design. Elizabeth is a member of the NC Room Task Force that D-OGS initiated to preserve the NC Room at the Orange County Public Library. I have a scan of the article if anyone wishes to see it. I can't attach a file to a RootsWeb list. Carol
