A B Markham's map of Orange County land grants can be viewed via the U N C library collection. Just google A B Markham's map of Orange County, N C land grants. I have heard the same story that the map is still available from his son, but I don't know his son's name. Maybe it is Frank. A B was a lawyer I seem to remember. -----Original Message----- From: ncdogs-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncdogs-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Richard Ellington Sent: Friday, September 17, 2010 8:44 AM To: ncdogs@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] Markum Family Stories Al, I think you are correct. Hello Al, This is Martha Gujda, remember me? We used to exchange info. about the Dunnagans of Orange Co. N.C. I have an 8X10 page of the map you refer to (I think) I got it at the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. It shows the owners of LAND in old Orange Co. around 1750. If this is the one you mean, I can send you a copy. Wasn't Markham the Orange County register of deeds for many years? And when he retired he made the map with the early land grant holders. When he died his wife continued to sell this map, I've about worn mine out, very good map of the early settlers in the county. I am not a relative, but I have seen this name often in my research. I wish the map was still available, I would like to replace mine!
I don't have any Markhams by any spelling in my database,, however I seem to remember two residences on Cleveland St. in the vicinity of First Baptist Church where Markhams lived. There was a Mrs. Markham who lived across the street (about where the fire station sits today) who had roomers and boarders (when have you heard that phrase?). Miss Juanita Ross, Public Health Nurse in East Durham, lived there when I was quite young (she later moved down to East Durham), but she rented and ate with Mrs. Markham. Then I seem to remember that there was an older house right next to the church on the corner that an older Mr. Markham lived. To the best of my memory, I don't think I ever saw him and the place always looked spooky to me. (Older in the late 1930's-early 1940's---your guess is as good as mine on what age person, especially since I don't remember ever actually seeing him.) I think the house has been gone for a number of years and maybe the church uses that lot as a parking lot. Durham deeds from that era might provide some info on these folks. I'd be interested in any info on this, just to satisfy my curiosity. There is even a Markham Memorial Gardens cemetery and a Markham Memorial Baptist Church. -----Original Message----- From: ncdogs-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncdogs-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Tradingpath@aol.com Sent: Thursday, September 16, 2010 9:01 PM To: ncdogs@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCDOGS] Markum Family Stories Dear Members, >From time to time in the Trading Path we want to feature a particular surname.
