Hello Again, This is your friendly Nominating Committee reporting in. Remember those three positions that we need to fill before our November D-OGS meeting next week? Well, they're still available. Human nature being what it is, we all tend to keep a low profile and hope that "someone else" will take the bait. Time for Plan B. If you are willing and able to place your name in nomination for President, Program Vice-President or Secretary, now is the time to let us know. We'll be waiting to hear from you! Many thanks, Cathy & Rob Elias

Thanks. Carol for the follow-up. See you all in November at the Chapel Hill Library. Nerissa On Oct 20, 2010, at 12:25 PM, HubbellGen@aol.com wrote: Nerissa and other CIG folks, Right now, we have a presenter for the November CIG meeting, and so we can meet in the Chapel Hill meeting room as planned and discuss our future plans then. It has been suggested that we bring refreshments and consider it a farewell brunch, and I think that would be a nice way to sum up what we have all learned from the CIG, and to help us think about what we would like it to be in the future, once we have our regular meeting place once more. The CIG has not consistently met in December due to the holiday season, and as you say December is the month D-OGS has its annual birthday party and dinner so we may want to consider that enough. If someone pops up with a request to present a topic for the December CIG meeting, I will certainly be happy to go to the meeting and enjoy the presentation. However to date I have not had such an offering. I'm sure we will have a lot to talk about at the November D-OGS meeting and I hope we have a huge turnout, in view of recent developments concerning our next president, vice president and program chair, and so on. I have my fingers crossed! Carol <i%20voted%20early.jpg>
Ginger, Carol, and other CIG attendees... With apologies, somehow I missed Ginger's email about booking a room for CIG at Durham's South Regional Library in December. I thought I had already checked on its status and found it booked. Apparently, I misread the schedule or something prior to your last emails. But, it is now booked for that day and time. (Saturday, December 11th.) I'm not sure if CIG normally meets in December because the group gathers for its holiday meal a week before. And, the holidays keep a lot of people busy. We are booked for Saturday, November 13th in the Chapel Hill Library Conference Room. Chapel Hill will not be available after that for more than a year. Should I start looking for a December location that also meets CIG's tech needs? Are we disbanding, or what? Nerissa
Of general interest to all: National Archives to Put the Founders Online Washington, DC...The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the grantmaking arm of the National Archives, is pleased to announce a cooperative agreement with The University of Virginia (UVA) Press to make freely available online the historical documents of the Founders of the United States of America. The NHPRC and UVA Press will create a new web site which provides access to the fully annotated published papers of key figures in the nation's Founding era. The project is designed to include the papers of George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission will provide funding in the amount of up to $2 million for the UVA Press to undertake the work on the published papers. Through this web resource, users will be able to read, browse, and search tens of thousands of documents from the Founding Era. A prototype web site including the contents of 154 volumes drawn from print editions of the papers of Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison will be prepared by October 2011. The fully public version will be launched by June 2012 and will also include the 27 volumes of the Papers of Alexander Hamilton. By June 2013, the Founders Online expects to add the 39 published volumes of the Papers of Benjamin Franklin. The new resource will include the complete contents of 242 printed volumes, including all of the existing document transcriptions and the editors' explanatory notes. "This new archive of the Founding Era will revolutionize our understanding," said David S. Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, "by creating for the first time a free and fully searchable collection of the Founders' own words in the context of their time. As scholars and statesmen debate the meaning of documents such as the Constitution and Bill of Rights, they can turn to the originals and the wit and wisdom of the Founders' own debates. And we can only express our gratitude for the effort of dedicated editors and scholars to create this work, a national monument to the founding of our nation."

Rocky Rocky, Had you been to more meetings over the years you would have seen many hard-working people who have done marvelous work for D-OGS for years and years and who still contribute regularly to its success and the richness of its resources. It's just a shame that to date, as far as I know, there is no one who has yet stepped up to take the leadership role. To say that this happens to other organizations from time to time is no comfort, but that is the case. This is clearly a time to give credit to those who have done so much for the organization. However this all turns out there are still people hard at work for D-OGS right now. They should all be thanked for their efforts. Thank you for your comments. Carol

Barb, I'm sorry to hear of your assorted woes, things do come in bunches, don't they? How about if I call you tomorrow afternoon? It's a bit late tonight. Maybe we can work something out. I guess you know my laptop has decided to fail too. What timing. I guess it's a gentle suggestion that next year we might want to suspend the CIG for a time. We can talk about our plans in the November meeting so everyone has an opportunity to speak up and make suggestions. I'll give you a call tomorrow. Carol
Hi Carol, I applaud you for the great job that you have done with CIG. When I first joined DOGS, I was so impressed with what you were doing. You were awesome!!! As for the presentation. I had planned to talk about using MS Word 2007 master document feature, the problems that I had and the advantages of using the PC extended screen option. Unfortunately, I have had computer woes for the last two months and have not done anything on the computer since. Because of drastic changes in my family life, a part-time job, and the problems with my computers, my life has become hectic and a little complicated. At this moment, I feel that I won't be able to do the presentation. Please call me to discuss this further. Thanks, Barbara. Barbara W. June, It's always been good to have you join the group as your schedule has allowed. I appreciate your contributions. Internet searching isn't the only thing that qualifies for interest by the CIG, technology includes the use of GPS, digital cameras and modification of images, corresponding with resource people via email or SKYPE complete with images of documents, etc, capturing interviews in the actual voice of the interviewee, and other things as technology develops. That is what has made it so interesting for such a long time. Thanks for your comments. Carol
Carol, I'm sorry I didn't respond quicker to your call for a projector. I bought one earlier this year and it could be used. However, as you know I travel and make only about half of the meetings. If I can be of any help for the CIG meetings, let me know. I'm headed out of town next week for an indefinite amount of time. It's a crazy way to live but it has to be this way for a while. I do hope the group doesn't disband as I have learned a lot from it. I don't do much Internet researching and poking around these days so I cannot add too much to the group's Internet listings. Things will be changing in the future. Dear Fellow D-OGS, We need to vote on a new slate of officers at our November meeting, and this list is sadly lacking in names at present. We need a President, a Program Vice-President, and a Secretary. Ginny is still our Treasurer, and people have already volunteered for the two Director positions. Two things will happen if we don't have a slate to vote on: 1) D-OGS will not cease to exist! We will continue to have the monthly Newsletter and the quarterly journal, The Trading Path. Highly capable members are still in charge of aspects such as membership, website and our communication by ListServe. 2) Beginning in January, we will no longer have monthly meetings for the folks in the local area. These meetings require people to plan the programs, confirm the meeting place, and preside. We would all, of course, miss the fellowship and the opportunity to exchange ideas. If you don't already have a position with D-OGS (elected or otherwise), please think about how you might help our society. If every single office is filled, no one job should be that difficult. Here are the job descriptions: President: presides at the monthly meetings; calls board meetings (quarterly, or as needed); keeps a finger on the pulse of the organization to >make sure all is running smoothly. Program Vice-President: oversees the calendar of monthly programs; with help from the membership, identifies and contacts potential speakers; confirms the meeting place; presides at the meeting in the absence of the President. Secretary: takes minutes at the monthly meetings and at board meetings; sends monthly minutes to the Newsletter editor for publication. Our grandmothers probably said it best - "Many hands make light work." If we all pull together, we can continue to have one of the best genealogical societies in the state. If you are willing and able to fill one of these positions for the 2010/2011 year, please contact us by email. Or, feel free to call us at (919) 544-7876. We look forward to hearing from you! Lynn, any such change will require a by-laws change. We are chartered to hold a general meeting once a month on the first Wednesday. Other meetings can be called as required by the elected official(s). This might be a good alternative IF we can get some members to step up and be nominated for office. - Richard On 10/13/2010 10:05 AM, lrichard@co.durham.nc.us wrote: > Cathy, > > What if we went to a meeting every other month?
