    3. Do supplies enter this picture of cost for genealogy? Books, archival safe paper, binders, software, computer maintenance and replacement, backup drives - external and internal and online/offsite. File cabinets, copy machine, printer, scanner? Perhaps I overlooked something.... mwhittier@nc.rr.com -----Original Message----- From: ncdogs-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncdogs-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of jdelalio@aol.com Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2010 1:03 PM To: ncdogs@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] NGS Article Carol, I totally agree that the figures used in the NGS Up Front email are way out of line unless you happen to live very close to conferences or have a bunch of relatives all over the US to stay with. When I go to a National Conference I estimate the cost at about $1,500 which may cover the cost of flying there (i.e.Salt Lake City), hotel stay which for Charleston will be for me $140 per day, meals, etc. The only fixed cost is $175 for conference registration but that balloons up if you attend workshops or luncheons which are important. I also think that the cost for Internet research sites is a bit low at $60. Ancestry alone is over $175.00. Using the International databases adds more. Footnote, Genealogy Bank and Eastman's Newsletter to name just a few other web sites all add dollars to your research bill but are indispensable for thorough research. I would also mentioned that vital records are much more costly than $15 each in many states. New York requests $27 per record and I believe Massachusetts is higher. Those figures get quite large in a year's time as you fill out your family. There are other items that I also think are on the low side but are not as important or necessary for all. I just wish I could get by for under $2,000 per year of expenses but it's all worth it. 1. [NCDOGS] Why I'm a Genealogist
    2. Wade D Dorland
    3. I received this from a fellow genealogist and was thrilled with it. Accordingly, here it is for your consideration. Why Genealogists Do What They Do (Author Unknown) We are the chosen. My feelings are, in each family, there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the Story Tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as if it were in our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us. “Tell our story.” So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying ‘I can’t let this happen’. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships, their losses and building a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That is why I do my family genealogy and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones.

    3. Very good advice from the previous posters on this thread. Another tool available is snopes.com, a website devoted to presenting information about viruses, urban legends, scams, etc. This site can be fun to read and gives a lot of useful info. Some points snopes.com makes about the Hallmark virus is that it is an old virus scam and it is not as powerful as most of the emails circulating might imply. However, it does require the user's action to fire it up, by clicking to another link. How dangerous that is may depend on how good your virus protection is. I have good virus protection, good firewall, etc., but last year my computer was reduced to a blue screen pile of useless rubble. Virus protection is necessary but may not always protect you. At least check whatever reference you trust before clicking that link. Happy holidays, Don Eastwood Hillsborough

    1. [NCDOGS] Another QuickSheet
    2. Elizabeth Shown Mills has done it again, just in time for the holidays when we will all likely be spending more time communicating with our extended families about our research. She has come out with a new QuickSheet that could be very helpful to us. They might make a thoughtful gift for a researcher friend or colleague. Address: 5006 NC Highway 55, Durham, NC 27713, (919) 544-2275 - Map: http://tinyurl.com/6bk38j. I understand there is a Senior Discount. This is not a regular meeting. There will be no speaker or fixed program. This is our annual "birthday party" for everyone to enjoy. Come and enjoy the fellowship of your fellow D-OGS members and their guests. Dress will be as formal or casual, as you require. Please RSVP if you are planning on attending to richard_ellington@unc.edu. We need to give the restaurant an approximate count for seating purposes. When you arrive, pay for your meal and proceed to the right to their meeting/party room. This is a good time to bring your spouse so that you can introduce them to all those people that you have mentioned during the last year - yes, we plan on having name tags. We will be holding our election of 2011 officers. We still do not have candidates for Vice-President or Secretary. -- Richard +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Richard Ellington 109 Bruton Drive Chapel Hill, NC 27516 919-967-4168 +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ ************************* Visit the D-OGS web site: http://www.ncgenweb.us/dogsnc/ To Unsubscribe: As a member you are automatically subscribed and remain subscribed.
