Funny thing about that Orange County book!!! I have found that there were far too many diverse subjects involved, on which I have loved researching, and I could not for the life of me figure out to bridge one subject to another! Sooo, I have pulled out my current family pics and have done a book for the young grandchildren concerning their heritage, just hitting the high spots. Then I found that I couldn't inc. my mother and her family plus my father and his family as too much info for one Orange Co. book for us grown ups. Sooo, went ahead and did daddy's side first and it is ready at BLURB.COM I called it KITH AND KIN. His family was in Orange on the Eno, THE PIPER-COX HOUSE, then to Durham when the tilthammer mill washed away in the flood of 1908, moved to Durham were dad was a good football player at Durham High, then they moved to Hillsborough and lived on an old farm in Schley...where Mrs. Phelps has lived since the 40's. Dad grad. at top of his class at Hill. and was class pres. Somewhere along the way, earlier, lived near current Estes-15-501 area where he first noticed my young mother, Billie Atwater Strowd, but he was 26 when the big romance began. Now to inc. lots of Chatham ancestors, plus the one's in current Orange. PLUS, my cousin in Durham and I have dug up direct lines back to Jamestown. Bottom line is...will I live long enough to make an enjoyable book out current Orange and Chatham just on my own lines, plus old time religion, those rascally UNC students, and all that great stuff... Never did answer your question...William Stroud was app. to lay out, or similar, a road from the Haw River, not the village by that name, to Hillsborough in 1777. He lived in the general area of Moses Atwater whose deeds, as I recall, mention the Haw river. Any ideas appreciated!! AND would I have gone to Hillsborough from C.H. as a child in the 40's to Hillsborough out the Airport Rd??? same as Columbia St., right? I have been to New Hope Ch. because of Johnston and Blackwood but don't recall HOW we left C.H. Bebe: My recollection is the route between Hillsboro and Chapel Hill in the 40's was via Highway 14 through Calvander and Carrboro. 14 is now called Old 86 and the route via North Columbia, Airport Road, etc did not go through until New 86 was built later, particularly the section from New Hope Church into Hillsborough. My best guess of the route from Hillsborough to Haw River in the 1770s was via the crossing at the ford at Faucette's Mill, then on by The Old Folks Home, The High Rock Road, Cross Roads Church, South to Haw River. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bebe and John Sent: Monday, September 17, 2007 11:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] HAW RIVER IN ORANGE IN 1777 TO HILLSBOROUGH RD??? Good news for genealogists?? We'll now have primary records to document Grandpa Cho's return as Nephew Hong... :) Jeff Palmer - [email protected] -----Original Message----- Chinese Government Regulates Reincarnation www.fortliberty.org/blog/chinese-goverment-regulates-reincarnation.html We do so much business with China that we often forget just how bizarrely inhuman the Chinese government really is. Luckily, the Chinese government figured out a way to remind us of their bureaucratic stupidity without actually murdering anyone this time. The boys in Beijing have banned Buddhist Monks from the practice of reincarnation without government permission. You read that right, it is now illegal to be reincarnated without filling out the proper paperwork and getting government permission. This bizarre move by the “State Administration for Religious Affairs” stems from an attempt by the communist Chinese to control Tibetan Buddhism. The current Dalai Lama is 72 years old and has stated that he will not be reborn in Tibet as long as it is under Chinese control. The Dalai Lama is currently living in India and the next Dalai Lama will very likely be born there. The communist Chinese will refuse to recognize that Dalai Lama — setting up a showdown with the Tibetan Buddhists. Can you imagine such stupidity happening in the United States, where we live under the protection of the First Amendment? Be careful how you cast your votes. It says this about the program: "How the Quakers Invented America Send to a friend Tuesday, September 4 2007 Until the start of the eighteenth century, the only organized religion in North Carolina was the Religious Society of Friends...or, The Quakers. Their founding principles of peace, freedom and equality influenced not just the state's earliest communities, but also our modern nation. Frank Stasio learns about the Quakers from David Yount, author of "How the Quakers Invented America" (Rowman & Littlefield/2007), Max Carter, director of the Guilford College Friends Center and Bill Leonard, dean and professor of church history at Wake Forest University Divinity School." I had intended to mention this at the D-OGS meeting last night but I forgot. There will be a storytelling session presented by Orville Hicks tomorrow in Wilson Library on the UNC campus from 10:00-11:00am. Orville Hicks is from the Beech Mountain, NC area and is a cousin of one of the most famous mountain storytellers, Ray Hicks, now deceased. Orville and Ray are noted for their Jack tales, ancient moralist stories with roots brought to the Appalachians by the early English and Scots-Irish settlers. If you have never heard Orville, you have missed out on a cultural treat. He speaks in a voice and with an accent largely unheard in North Carolina anymore. You can close your eyes and listen to Orville talk in the manner of mountain folk of a hundred years ago. I will make every effort to be at this event. Please join me. - Richard
Hi Jim, John Hart and Capt. John Rush were both English and came into PA in Sept. or Oct., 1682. You will find John Hart's permission to leave in the Witney, Oxfordshire, England Quaker Meeting Minutes for 1682. Also, you can find both men mentioned in early PA records, e.g. John Hart was an Assemblyman and and the Quakers in and around Byberry Township met in his home and this is in the early PA Quaker records. Also, John Hart was one of the twelve Quakers appointed to decide an issue about Keith after Keith had made public comments about the Quakers and some of their top officials in PA. It is also easy to find information on Capt. John Rush because of his relationship to the signer, Dr. Benjamin Rush. John H. Miller On Sep 4, 2007, at 11:26 AM, JAMES LINDLEY wrote: > I'm sure you have all heard of Hinshaw's Quaker History available > in most libraries. Thanks so much for sending the information about Ernie Dollar. When I first started my search for the Dollar history in 2005, I saw some of Ernie's messages on Roots Web from several years ago. I sent a reply to his web address then, but it was returned to me as undeliverable. I could never locate him after that. He must have a wonderful store of knowledge about the Dollars, simply by living back there in the area where they first came to America, and working where he works. I look forward to contacting him. So nice of you to send it to me. Betty Davidson Oregon City, OR -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John H. Noon, Tuesday, Sept. 4 It happens that there is a radio program beginning now on WUNC FM entitled "How the Quakers Invented America" that many of you may find interesting. If you cannot listen to the radio right now, you may access the program by going to WUNC.org and clicking on the title of the program. From there you can listen to it at a later time. It says this about the program: "How the Quakers Invented America Send to a friend Tuesday, September 4 2007 Until the start of the eighteenth century, the only organized religion in North Carolina was the Religious Society of Friends…or, The Quakers. Their founding principles of peace, freedom and equality influenced not just the state’s earliest communities, but also our modern nation. Frank Stasio learns about the Quakers from David Yount, author of “How the Quakers Invented America” (Rowman & Littlefield/2007), Max Carter, director of the Guilford College Friends Center and Bill Leonard, dean and professor of church history at Wake Forest University Divinity School." You may choose to download the RSS feed and listen to it at a later date on your computer, PDA or other device.
