DNA studies suggest that all humans today descend from a group of African ancestors who-about 60,000 years ago-began a remarkable journey. As National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and Director of National Geographic and IBM's Genographic Project, Dr. Wells spends much of his time traveling the globe studying indigenous and traditional peoples to unravel age-old mysteries about our collective human story. By using DNA as a study tool, Dr. Wells and his team are filling in the gaps of humankind's journey, and will conduct the largest anthropological survey of human genetic diversity ever undertaken. Join the College of Computing and Informatics at UNC Charlotte and Dr. Wells for dinner and a special keynote presentation at the Hilton Charlotte Center City. A panel discussion with Dr. Wells and select UNC Charlotte scholars on the significance of DNA as a historical document will follow the presentation. <http://images.bigfootinteractive.com/images/7110103/19531406/092607tix.gif> <http://newsletters.nationalgeographic.com/W9RH01523C79AD1D1DD1E36B24FA30> Buy Tickets <http://newsletters.nationalgeographic.com/W9RH01523C585D1D1DD1E36B24FA30> <http://newsletters.nationalgeographic.com/W9RH01523C684D1D1DD1E36B24FA30> To learn more about Spencer Wells and the Genographic Project, <http://newsletters.nationalgeographic.com/W9RH01523C387D1D1DD1E36B24FA30> click here. Wednesday, 3 October 2007 -- D-OGS Meeting TOPIC: "The Hatfields and The McCoys!" Speaker: Ron McCoy Ron McCoy is the great-great-great grandson of Randolph McCoy (the clan patriarch of the "Hatfield and McCoy" feud from the 1880s). Ron will speak about his family and its rich and colorful history. Ron intends to cover the story of the feud as well as the extensive genealogy work that has been done on the families (particularly the McCoys). Portions of his presentation will be based on a book written by his grandfather's aunt, Truda Willams McCoy entitled "The McCoys: their stories as told to the author by eye witnesses and descendents". This book is the definitive account of the feud from the "McCoy" point of view. Truda conducted first-person interviews with feud participants in the 1920s and completed her manuscript about 1935. Despite several unsuccessful attempts to get her book published, it was finally publiahed in 1976 by her children after Truda's death. Recently, HBO optioned this book as a possible mini-series. D-OGS Meeting will be held on: Wednesday evening, 3 October 2007 at 7 p.m. Duke Homestead Visitor's Center 2828 Duke Homestead Road, Durham 27705 Phone: (919) 477-5498 One-half mile from I-85 and Guess Rd (Exit 175) Follow the brown historic site road signs. The D-OGS CIG for October has had to be rescheduled once again, so please mark your calendars for the meeting this coming Saturday, October 6 at the Chapel Hill Library, downstairs in the small conference room. We will talk about the many ways we can use technology to share our family history, not just for Family History Month, but all year around. Everyone is welcome to join us and bring some new ideas to the table. Remember the group is designed for all levels of experience, from none to years. We will touch on a number of other topics as usual, including your questions about your genealogy program, your computer, or other electronics. As long as it aids your genealogy, it's fair game. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, September 30, 2007 9:10 PM Subject: The Trading Path Journal Returns Dear D-OGS Members, Good news! Your journal, The Trading Path, will soon be back in publication. We plan to publish a single, extended issue for each of the missed years 2005, 2006, and 2007. Then we'll resume a publication schedule that will be at least two double issues per year of about 40 pages each, or possibly four smaller quarterly issues if mailing costs are not prohibitive. Needless to say, we’ll be needing lots of material to fill these issues – and make them both interesting and informative to the membership. This is where you come in! Feature articles are needed on the history of our counties, including the families who dwelt there, but there are plenty of other ways you can contribute as well: 1. How-to articles. Have you come up with a method for solving a particular research problem? Share it with the rest of us. 2. Family artifacts. Do you have interesting family letters, diaries, or photos that relate to Durham or Orange County? Transcribe/scan them and send them to us electronically. 3. Old documents. Is there a will, a death certificate, or a marriage certificate in that genealogy box in your closet? These, too, may be scanned and sent to us by email if you would like to share them. 4. Community memories. If you have photographs of old businesses, churches or schools that existed here in Durham or Orange Counties, send us a copy. Photographs from old yearbooks would also be great. 5. Your special area of expertise. If you have knowledge of anything that would help other genealogists, do consider writing it up for our journal. Examples: - photography - archival preservation - organizing files - interviewing senior citizens - publishing your own family history 6. Book reviews. Have you read something related to genealogy or history that really impressed or interested you? Write a brief description of the book and tell us why you liked it. 7. Ideas for articles. Is there a topic you’d love to read about in the journal, but writing isn’t your thing? Send us the idea, and we’ll find someone to work on it. 8. Fillers. We can always use half-page, or less, items such as humorous epitaphs, interesting items from old newspapers, etc. Feel free to write to us any time, at [email protected] . Questions are as welcome as submissions. Articles may be written in either WordPerfect or MSWord. We’ll even take hand-written ones (especially if your penmanship made your third grade teacher proud). Submissions are welcome any time, year ‘round. The copy deadline for volume 15, space permitting, is October 31, 2007. This journal belongs to every member of D-OGS! If we all work at finding those interesting articles, photos and documents, it will be a resounding success. In advance, we thank you for your help. Sincerely, Robert & Catherine Elias Editors
If you are doing British Genealogy then this email is especially for you. ARCHIVE CD BOOKS (GB) IS TO BE CLOSING DOWN on 30 September 2007! http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/ Go here to read about the history of Archive CD Books and 'thumb' through their catalog. "As Rod Neep is retiring, Archive CD Books Ltd will cease trading and the company will be closed down. The company is not being sold. We expect the close to take place on 30th September 2007, after which this on-line catalogue and ordering will no longer be available." "The catalogue shows normal prices BUT when you check out, if the order value (excluding tax) is £15 or more then the final amount will be discounted by a massive 50%." Archive CD Books will continue to be available in the US through www.WhollyGenes.com, go to the cite and click on Data CD's in the left column. But you cannot beat their price at 50% off. I, for one, will be sorry to see the British site and Rod Neep go. Rod should be applauded for what he has done for the genealogical community. That's all. Excuse me now while I go fill my wish list............. Paul

Ms Scarlett, I'll make a very hasty response and try not to embarrass Bill after he suggested I might know something. There is a well preserved Faucette Mill northwest of Hillsborough and it, the miller's house, and a colonial era inn sit next to the great road to Salisbury. In fact, modern Lebanon Rd was of the three major westbound roads, throughout most of the 19th century, the main westbound road out of Hillsborough. The ford there, in fact, pre-dates Hillsborough. Another ford, one on the most recent mill pond was regularly used by local folks for car washing of a Sunday, and it is only recently that the latest owner of the mill seat has banned public use of the ford.. There is a file on the mill in the verticle files of the NC Room in the OC Library, and the inn up the road, called "Chatwood" also has its own file that includes information germane to Faucette Mill. One of the hurricanes, probably Fran, tore out the beautiful free stacked stone dam back in the 90s. There is still visible, though, a head race carved out of bedrock between the dam site and the mill site. The road beds on both sides of the river leading to the ford are still visible. The current owners wrapping a 5000 sqft structure around the original 500 sqft miller's house but you can still see part of one wall of the older building. That's about all I can think of now. oops..diminish!! Jim, maybe you are on to something!! Hwy 86 does look likely! Bebe Researching North Carolina and Virginia families -----Original Message----- From: Bebe and John <[email protected]> To: [email protected]; [email protected] Sent: Sat, 22 Sep 2007 3:35 pm Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] HAW RIVER IN ORANGE IN 1777 TO HILLSBOROUGH RD??? river appears to diminish bet. hwy 54 and hwy 87 appears that wm stroud lived bet. This appears to be the little part of the Haw in current Orange Co. but I don't see a likely route to Hillsborough. Of course everything has changed out Carrboro way over the years. Any guesses, tho, appreciated! Drive out of C.H. toward Snow Camp and will cross a bridge as you are heading toward the location where this rd. intersects with hwy 54. Looks to me like the Haw...and I followed it on a Google map right up to it's known location in Alamance Co. Cousin Walter Atwater, whose home falls barely into Orange, lives on Collins Mt. Rd. and his/our ancestor, Moses Atwater's land, from which Walter's is a part of, had the Haw as his back boundary. The Orange-Chatham land boundary marker runs right through his land. The Stroud land and the Atwater land joined each other. Notice Terrell's Creek, below. As I recall the Atwater family had mills on one of old Timothy Terrell's several creeks and I think Bryant Stroud's mill was on Morgan Creek...does anyone know where Morgan's Mill was?? Maybe where 15-501 crosses? I think Morgan Creek was named for Hardy Morgan. He sold Point Prospect/Barbee Mt., behind Dromghoul Castle to his cousin, Old Kit Barbee and the adjoining property, Strowd Hill, to my g g grandfather W.F. Strowd, now known as Davie Circle. I have the data below ready for my Orange Co. book....Bebe William Stroud, Jr. settled in Orange County where he served as a juror in 1777, 1778, and 1779, thus is listed with the DAR as a Revolutionary Patriot. In 1777 he was appointed to help determine the route from the Chatham County line over the Haw River at Morgan's Mill to Hillsborough. He servedº as tax accessor for the St. Thomas District in the same year. William also served to help oversee the repair of the road from Hillsborough to James Mill and the road from Hillsborough to ten mile tree. In 1777 his plantation was valued at 6,547 pounds. In 1779 he entered 640 acres on Terrell's Creek, the land ajoining that of his brother Peter. The Orange County tax list of 1780 shows that he owned 892 acres of land, 19 head of cattle and 6 horses, for a total of 5,780 pounds. He directed John Hogan, Thomas Lloyd, and son John Stroud to appraise his estate. His witnesses were William Willis, Mary Buckner, and William Buckner, who all made their marks. William Stroud, however, signed his own name. He died within the same month, as his will was entered for probate at August Court. William chose his wife Elizabeth, and his "trusty friend" John Hogan, as executors. Hogan was a well to do man who had held the responsible position of Treasurer of Orange County. The property of William Stroud was to be eventually divided among his children, excluding John, whom we know was already settled on Phil's Creek, with his wife Delilah Bryant. Was this the same John Hogan, who in Granville County testified at the murder trial of Delilah's father, William Bryant ? And is this the same Lloyd family who were neighbors to the Stroud's in Brunswick County, Virginia? Thank you. I'll email him. Not only was Wm Stroud Jr. app. to help lay out a rd. from over the Haw River, I think it says "over" the Haw, to Hillsborough but Marmaduke Kimbrough, one of the very first 8 justices in new Orange, meeting in Hillsborough, wanted to build the court house, jail, etc. on his land where he lived...the Haw River. This is in the first few pages of the Orange Co. Pleas and Quarter Sessions. The only place I have seen the Haw River is in Alamance Co. and within a very few miles before entering Pittsboro, Chatham Co. on 15-501, near the exit to the village of Bynum. Even my husband, born in Person Co. and grew up in Alamance draws a blank on the Haw in Orange. OK...am now on a hunt for the Haw..., me and John Lawson. kinda fun!! Dear Jim, I am very interested in your info on the Faucette Mill area. My husband's family the Scarletts married the Faucetts after they all moved to Indiana in the early to mid 1800's. Before that they all lived in old Orange County. We live in Idaho and it's hard to get back to N.C. with enough time to research the area, but last time we were there (2005) we found quite a few Faucetts in Union Ridge Cemetery near Graham which is near Haw River. In the old will of William Faucett of 1815 his land is described as near a "wagon road leading to the Great Road". We tried to figure out where this was located. Can you tell me where the Faucette Mill was? Any information you have on this area would be very helpful to me> Lorelei Scarlett Boise, Idaho --- Jim Richmond <[email protected]> wrote: > Bebe: My recollection is the route between Hillsboro > and Chapel Hill in the > 40's was via Highway 14 through Calvander and > Carrboro. 14 is now called Old > 86 and the route via North Columbia, Airport Road, > etc did not go through > until New 86 was built later, particularly the > section from New Hope Church > into Hillsborough. According to George W. Tate's 1871 map of Orange County there was a road from Chapel Hill via New Hope Pres Church called the New Chapel Hill Road. Roughly it follows New 86. I don't ever remember using it, so maybe parts of it was not improved while the road shown on this map as Old Chapel Hill Road, roughly Old 86, and before that NC14, was paved and is the road we always used traveling between Hillsborough and Chapel Hill. On this map it looks like the New Chapel Hill road goes down Hillsborough Street rather than North Columbia Street. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bebe and John Sent: Monday, September 17, 2007 5:46 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] HAW RIVER IN ORANGE IN 1777 TO HILLSBOROUGH RD??? Funny thing about that Orange County book!!! I have found that there were far too many diverse subjects involved, on which I have loved researching, and I could not for the life of me figure out to bridge one subject to another! Sooo, I have pulled out my current family pics and have done a book for the young grandchildren concerning their heritage, just hitting the high spots. Then I found that I couldn't inc. my mother and her family plus my father and his family as too much info for one Orange Co. book for us grown ups. Sooo, went ahead and did daddy's side first and it is ready at BLURB.COM I called it KITH AND KIN. His family was in Orange on the Eno, THE PIPER-COX HOUSE, then to Durham when the tilthammer mill washed away in the flood of 1908, moved to Durham were dad was a good football player at Durham High, then they moved to Hillsborough and lived on an old farm in Schley...where Mrs. Phelps has lived since the 40's. Dad grad. at top of his class at Hill. and was class pres. Somewhere along the way, earlier, lived near current Estes-15-501 area where he first noticed my young mother, Billie Atwater Strowd, but he was 26 when the big romance began. Now to inc. lots of Chatham ancestors, plus the one's in current Orange. PLUS, my cousin in Durham and I have dug up direct lines back to Jamestown. Bottom line is...will I live long enough to make an enjoyable book out current Orange and Chatham just on my own lines, plus old time religion, those rascally UNC students, and all that great stuff... Never did answer your question...William Stroud was app. to lay out, or similar, a road from the Haw River, not the village by that name, to Hillsborough in 1777. He lived in the general area of Moses Atwater whose deeds, as I recall, mention the Haw river. Any ideas appreciated!! AND would I have gone to Hillsborough from C.H. as a child in the 40's to Hillsborough out the Airport Rd??? same as Columbia St., right? I have been to New Hope Ch. because of Johnston and Blackwood but don't recall HOW we left C.H. Bebe, the Haw River itself doesn't go anywhere close to Hillsborough. Do you mean the town of Haw River? If so, that piece of old US70 from Hillsborough to Haw River follows an old trading path and a Haw River ford very closely, I am told. The old route from Chapel Hill to Hillsborough (now called Old NC86) was originally the Hillsborough to Fayetteville road. The new NC86 (Airport Road extension - past New Hope Presbyterian Church) was formalized in the 1950's, I believe. When are we going to hear something about that book on your Olde Orange families? Great job! >Any ideas appreciated!! I hope you'll find a more descriptive name than "Kith and Kin". Generically titled genealogy publications are notoriously difficult to find in library and online catalogs. >AND would I have gone to Hillsborough from C.H. as a child in the 40's to Hillsborough out the Airport Rd??? same as Columbia St., right? To get to Hillsborough from Chapel Hill, you would indeed have taken Airport Road (which, very near the center of Chapel Hill, forks off of Columbia Street); however, it's recently been renamed "Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard". Thanks, Jim. I am going to have to do some map study...which is great fun, anyway! How would Bruce come to Hillsborough to see your Dad. Sometime I went with him and don't recall going thru Carrboro but I was probably running my young mouth instead of looking out the window! My best guess of the route from Hillsborough to Haw River in the 1770s was via the crossing at the ford at Faucette's Mill, then on by The Old Folks Home, The High Rock Road, Cross Roads Church, South to Haw River. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bebe and John Sent: Monday, September 17, 2007 11:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] HAW RIVER IN ORANGE IN 1777 TO HILLSBOROUGH RD???
