Anyone live close to DC? If so, you may be interested in attending this upcoming meeting: On Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the Mount Vernon Genealogical Society (MVGS) will meet in room 112 of the Hollin Hall Senior Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The meeting will start at 1:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The meeting will feature a presentation entitled "Buried Births: Finding Birth Information in Federal Records." The program will be presented by Susannah Brooks. Susannah E. Brooks is vice president/membership chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society (MAGS) and a volunteer genealogy staff aide at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC. As a researcher she specializes in German, 19th and 20th century general US research, and using bank records in genealogical research. She has lectured on topics related to German and German-American genealogical research, using bank records for genealogical research, and basic genealogical research skills. She has written articles that have appeared in Der Kurier (newsletter of the Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society) and Roots-Key (newsletter of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles). Determining the place of birth is often the key to finding additional information about our ancestor, but most federal records give only the state or foreign country in which a person was born. This presentation, through the use of many examples, will show how one may be able to find the exact place of birth in federal records. Emphasis will be on looking at all the details in each record to find the information or clues we need as researchers. The Hollin Hall Senior Center is located 4 miles south of Alexandria just off Fort Hunt Road at 1500 Shenandoah Road in Alexandria, Virginia. MVGS is a nonprofit organization and has over 260 members residing in Alexandria, Fort Belvoir, the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, Montgomery, and Prince Georges, as well as several states. Additional information about the meeting and MVGS can be found at http://www.MVGenealogy.org/. Any questions about the program should be directed to Harold McClendon at 703-360-0920. -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K. It seems that I am doing nothing but writing the list to say that there have been changes in our meeting place for the D-OGS Computer SIG. It's happened again for December, as our preferred date would conflict with the CH Library's book sale, so we have made a change of date, but we DO have the room, so I'd like to try to keep moving forward, despite the obstacles. We will meet on the 15th of December. Besides the usual new and interesting sites to share and articles to discuss, I'd like to suggest something new to see if it is useful for us. When you come, have in mind an ancestor you would like to do some online searching on, and we will put our heads together to use all the tools we know about to compile some information for you. It's the "thousand monkeys and a thousand [sic] computers" theory. Together we probably have a lot of resources that we don't have at our fingertips individually. Bring a name, birth and death dates, locations, any identifying information that will help us search. Please send in interesting new web sites, and other items you'd like to share with the group well ahead of time so I can include them on the agenda. Thanks. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, see you soon. Carol ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Harvard Professor and genealogist Henry Louis Gates, Jr., announced formation of a new DNA project for those wanting to explore both deep roots and more recent ties among African Americans. He was scheduled to speak about his project to us project administrators at our Houston seminar in October but a sudden family health emergency prevented it. This newspaper article and the links to Gates' new website give the essential information: http://www.telegram.com/article/20071115/APN/711150906 This should be a fascinating study. Anne Crocker
Hi Joyce, Sorry to hear that you will not be able to make it. I keep hoping that everyone will come, from near or far. Two years ago, one of our fellow members from Washington D.C. happened to be in Durham and came to our birthday celebration. We were glad to welcome him. If you are up this way and in town the day of one of our meetings on the first Wednesday of any month, we will be happy to welcome you too. Let us know ahead of time and we can meet you for dinner before the meeting. I just happened to know where there is a good restaurant.<g> Happy Holidays to you! Hi Everyone, This is not about genealogy, not political, but a route to reach as many people as I can regarding our troops. My son-in-law is on his 3 rd rotation in Iraq & regardless of your position on the war, we need to support our troops, so this is an FYI. Hi Carol, I have somehow, somewhere along the way managed to end up with TWO copies of PROFESSIONAL GENEALOGY by Mills. I can't imagine how I did this, but such is the case. I would like to donate one of these as a prize for the Birthday Party, if appropriate. Or D-OGS can feel free to use it as a door prize for some other event, whatever. Ava -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2007 8:26 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NCDOGS] D-OGS Upcoming Birthday Party As Paul announced in the recent meeting, we will be holding our birthday party at the Mayflower Restaurant in Hillsborough December 5 (more to follow on details), so it's time to put together the annual quiz that we all participate in as our after dinner "entertainment". I'm inviting everyone to submit a question to be included in the quiz and I'd like to emphasize the fact that this is one of the times of the year that our "distant D-OGS" can participate in the Society. This is a way to say thank you to the locals, even those who have no ancestors in Old Orange County, who serve as Society officers, produce the print materials, do the copying, writing, searching, and reporting of the material that enriches all our genealogy. Questions need not be fancy or complicated, and they should be designed to be answered by the average genealogist, not the experts. (Remember this is supposed to be fun - not the GRE.) It's best to make them easy to score at the party, so consider these types of questions as you start scratching your head: 1. True or false 2. Brief fill in the blank(s) 3. Multiple choice They can address two general topics: subjects pertinent to Old Orange County NC, or subjects likely to be well known by genealogists anywhere, such as forms, terms, standard genealogical tools or materials. They should be reasonable to answer or guess at. Thank you in advance for helping make our birthday party an enjoyable time, and contributing to YOUR genealogical society. Every question truly helps. Tip: the more answerable the questions are, the more likely attendees will be to win some of the prizes I've seen Cathy Elias gathering over the year. You're really going to like the choice she's going to have for us. OK, now I'll start looking in my mailbox for questions! Hi, Wasn't this group talking recently about the importance of genealogy in medicine? I just read an interesting article in the Vanderbilt Magazine regarding a new theory about the Hatfield-McCoy feud. Apparently yet another McCoy descendent showed up at the Vanderbilt Hospital recently to have her adrenal gland removed. It turns out that this family suffers from Hippel-Lindau disease, a genetic disorder that results in tumors that can occur in many body organs, frequently in the adrenal gland. These tumors are responsible for spewing out large quantities of adrenalin-like compounds into the blood stream that result in hyperactivity, etc. This, theoretically, can make a person suffering from this disorder very angry and upset for no good reason. While this would not explain the entire feud, it could explain why it got so out of hand and bizarre!
