(To do that, on the first page click on the "search" tab then "Research Helps" just below that tab. You want "Sorted by Place", then click on the letter "G" and scroll down to the item on Germany you want. You can download the "Germany Research Outline" as a pdf document to print out or store on your computer.) These guides for various kinds of research are very helpful. Not all presentations are designed to be readily recorded or transmitted as they may depend heavily on graphics that are not in the slide show format (such as objects, overhead projection, etc.). There is always the expense of recording as well as the willingness of someone to take the responsibility of doing the recording, mailing, etc. It sounds like an interesting idea though, who knows, maybe someone will get excited about the idea and take it on. Just for the sake of curiosity, is there a genealogical society near where you are currently living? I'd hope that it would offer some good programs that might meet your needs there, particularly when they are as generic as German research. I know it's not always easy to find a way to have your research needs met locally if you are far from home. For instance, I have no connections south of NY state, and it's a challenge to find research help that comes to me - I often have to go to great lengths to meet my learning needs. Perhaps you could work with the program committee in your local society to encourage them to schedule speakers that are relevant to topics outside of strictly local ones. One of the best sources I've found is the periodic regional National Genealogical Society conferences that are held in nearby states, if not in one's own state. The recent one in Richmond had some excellent presentations on German topics for instance. And they're such fun! Good luck with your research. Dear Bobee, I work at the Raney Library, so was able to pick up copies of all the handouts today. There were none from the speaker, just research guides prepared by the library staff. Where do you folks live? Are you planning on coming to the D-OGS dinner next Wednesday in Hillsborough? I'll be bringing the copies to that event. If you can't be there, give me your mailing address and I'll send them. Cathy Elias Durham In a message dated 11/27/2007 2:32:49 P.M. If Dr. Stadelmeier is invited to speak at an upcoming D-OGS meeting, perhaps he will consent to providing handouts and to allowing the talk to be recorded to be sold, at a nominal cost, to members who are unable to attend the meeting. In fact, this might be a useful feature for most future programs. Some members, like myself, live too far away (about 3,000 miles) to be able to attend meetings. -- Dan Durham ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. I have been in contact with Judy Rysdon, president of the WCGS, to ask for any materials that might have been available at last night's program on "Researching German Ancestry". I asked her to forward any handouts or other materials that the speaker might have brought. She sent me this reply this morning: Richard, The most interesting part of Hans' talk was about the documentation necessary to prove you were not Jewish that was necessary for soldiers to keep on their person, so copies wouldn't be available at some public repository, and his stories about how they lease burial space and remove the stones if the lease isn't continued. He also talked about how records were kept for royalty and how almost all European royalty were German. It was an unusual talk and stimulated a lot of interest. He didn't pass around handouts but I saw one on German handwriting on the desk. He put up transparencies of German names and their American sound alikes and translation surnames. Perhaps it would be a good idea for D-OGS to invite Dr. Stadelmeier to speak at an upcoming D-OGS meeting. Carol: I am too far away to attend the CIG meeting; could I give you a name of my ggrandfather and ggrandmother to search for me; They were listed in the Granville County census in 1880 but I cannot find them after then. I have searched for three or more years and had not found when and where they died. His name is John W. Gresham and her name is Julia Ann Brame. The date of their births was listed in 1818 (at times 1814) and they were married in Granville Cty in 1840. Can you possibly help or someone in the group help me break thru this brick wall. My grandfather, Thomas Lewis Grissom is listed in the 1880 census with them and he and my grandmother Annie Stone were married in Dec 16 1881. Mucho thanks to Carol. I went down that path but chickened out one step too soon! You can go to http://whollygenes.com/ and click on "download a 30-Day Free Trial" and when it gives you the opportunity, key in your serial number to register it. I believe that's what I did the last time I put it on a new computer. I know it was very easy, much more so than I anticipated. Carol
So I found my serial number(s) - I have 2 but that is a long story. TMG did not an "uninstall" so I "removed it via the control panel. THEN I discovered that I cannot figure out how to get to where I can download TMG! HELP, Peg Edwards
