    3. A New Trading Path - Volume 15, Winter 2008 Trading Path News! The last issue of our journal was the Summer 2004 Trading Path that was published November 2005. Yes, we are way behind in publishing, our apologies, but we have new editors, Rob and Cathy Elias, and new material. Volume 15, Winter 2008 was delivered to our printer this last Wednesday, 23 January 2008. We plan to mail this issue in the first week of February 2008. It is our plan to publish three more issues this year to catch up and then resume the normal two issues per year. I was involved in the proof reading process, and I can tell you that you are in for a treat - 40 pages and looks very good! I can also tell you that the next issue is already under way and about half way to completion. Here is what I need from you. We must have your current address to get this volume to you in a timely manner. Have you moved since our last mailing or since you became a member or sent in your renewal. Has your Zip Code changed? We are also in process of cleaning up our database to do an emailing/mailing of our membership list. Please send me your changes: Address: Phone number: Email address: *** Do not hit reply!! 3. Allen , I remember this cemetary and walked by it every day on my way to school . I remember about 10 years ago (I think) going to the site and not finding the tombstones. I wondered what happened. I know from my experience as a County Commissioner that moving a cemetary is very difficult to do . I am not sure as to how this was done and what the city permitted. Does anyone know for sure? I would be interested in knowing . I have a feeling that there were some "strings pulled" or ordinances violated in this situation . Please let me know and I may take a look at what happened and if everyone abided by the law, both State and local. 1. [NCDOGS] Carolina Voices
    2. I just heard an announcement for "Voices of North Carolina", a repeat program on UNCNC (Time Warner Cable channel) that will be run this coming Saturday. It will air at 7:00 PM on our local cable channel 204, but I'm certain that will vary widely with locality. The previous program at 6:00 is "Mountain Talk", which features the Appalachian dialects. Some of these programs are classics and I'm sure you'll enjoy them if you can find them. All this is in keeping with the topic of the February D-OGS meeting featuring Dr. Walt Wolfram, so maybe it will whet your appetite for the meeting. It should be fascinating. 1. Re: [NCDOGS] CIG Meeting
    2. Richard, That's good news, thanks for your assertiveness with the scheduling. As you probably deduced from my message to the list, Mike emailed me to protest the fact that he didn't know about the change of the January meeting date and would have shown up on the regular date. I told him we had posted it on the web page, announced it in the meeting, and sent a note to the list and I didn't know what more we could do to inform people of changes. I think we have all become aware that change is possible at any time, so we need to keep our eyes open for the date. The January meeting was interesting and well-attended. The regulars are really enjoying the meetings, and the room adds to the presentations. We still seem to be finding enough to keep us busy and involved. On another front, as you probably know, I've never researched in the UNC library, at least in part because of the difficulty in parking, but also because of my overall unfamiliarity with the facility - it's a bit overwhelming. I may be forced to make the plunge soon though, as I have been using Google Book Search and have found several books containing references to Samuel Burrage Reed, the architect. There is also a reference in the UNC law library and I'm really dreading going after that one but I suppose I must at some point. I have no idea where the building is! You are fortunate to be familiar with that campus. Carol ************** Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape. http://body.aol.com/fitness/winter-exercise?NCID=aolcmp00300000002489

    3. It is with a great deal of sadness that I report the death of long-time D-OGS member Altha W. Parks “Weynette” Haun, 81, passed away at her home on Argonne Drive in Durham Saturday morning, 5 January. Over the years, Weynette had been very active in county records transcriptions in North Carolina and had several volumes of county records transcriptions, including early court records for Orange County, available for sale. Ms. Haun is survived by her two sons, Robert Arnold Haun Jr. and Walter Reid Haun Sr. A funeral service will be held at a later date. 3. Carol, I was able to secure the small conference room at the Chapel Hill Library for 9 February. I called on Monday as soon as they opened. 1. [NCDOGS] Merritt
    2. Dear Mabel, How wonderful to hear from you!!! The Merritt Bible is a puzzle, if Grandpa Merritt had the bible my aunt may know about its whereabouts. Margaret Barbee Merritt, M.B's wife and daughter in law to Henry Carl might know. She is still living and resides in a nursing home in Durham. After that I would think that Eleanor or Frances would be the ones to ask. Eleanor's last name is Jordan and France's last name is Smith and I honestly do not know if either are still living. I have been trying to prove the connection between Pleasant and William Henry for some time. My branch of the Barbee's does not got through that Christopher, but is from William Barby to John Barbee to Christopher. "Old Kit" was the son of William Barbee, who was the son of John and Ann Barbee. That makes my Christopher and William, brothers. Lord knows we are all related. I live in Florida and hopefully I will be seeing my Aunt Margaret in May, I will be glad to ask her if she knows anything about the Merritt Bible. If you live in Durham you are welcomed to go visit her. She has had a stroke and remembers thing generally well, but needs round the clock care that her sons can not provide. Look forward to hearing from you again Linda B. Thompson [email protected] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mabel & Reece Dillard <[email protected]> [Add to Address Book] To: [email protected] Subject: Saw your e-mail on Roots web Date: Jan 6, 2008 6:19 PM Clean Clean DocumentEmail MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Dear Linda, I saw your e-mail about the Merritt family and just had to respond. My grandmother was Mabel Ester Merritt daughter of Marion Barbee and Mary Helen Riggsbee Merritt. She was the 11th of 12 children with Carl being the baby. I have done a lot of research on the Merritt family and would be glad to share what I have. The twelve children were in order of birth Elizabeth Susan, Lila Alma, Thomas Gaston, Mary Beulah, Cara Custis, Ewell Gordon, Wellington Barbee, Lilla Daisy, Alice Helen, Minnie Cleveland, Mabel Ester and Henry Carl. I am particularly interested in knowing if you have ever seen or know where the Merritt family Bible is. It was referred to when Mabel and Carl got their delayed birth certificates. It was said to be in the possession of their sister Alice. Another cousin thinks it might now be with Frances since Alice lived with Carl after their parents died. I have two different last names for Frances so if you know it I would like to verify which of the two I have is correct. I am working on the Barbee cemetery where Marion Barbee Merritt, his wife and several of his children and grandchildren are buried. He and his daughter Cara have tombstones with the rest of the graves marked by rocks. There is some interest in getting markers for the other graves but I lack definite dates for some of the people to put dates on markers. Marion Barbee Merritt’s grandfather was William Henry Merritt. Sr., father of Pleasant, who married Susannah Barbee, daughter of Christopher, “Old Kit” Barbee thus the reason the name Barbee keeps appearing in the Merritt family. I hope to hear from you soon so we can exchange information. Mabel Dillard

UNC football player of note in '69 and '70, Don McCauley, has a Merritt line and I would love to know how "Jack" Merritt, sd. to have been b. in Orange Co., who was another but earlier, 1920 or so as I recall, UNC football player of note, called the "BATTERING RAM" whose nickname gave head cheerleader at UNC the idea for a ram to be the school mascot. Would like to tie the two Merritt families tog. Don's Orange Merritt ancestor was Rev. Merritt who owned Merritt Mill near Morgan Creek. Sorry I don't have any answers for your questions, tho!! 3. How might Francis Marion E. Barbee (1846-1910) who married Medora Alice Norwood (1859-1918) fit into this family? Or does he? Francis M. E. was born in Orange Co. and died in Durham Co. Medora was born in Granville Co. and died in Durham Co. If this is a fit, I have more info and two different and distinct connections to both of these folks. 2. Hi Jim..how about Eben was a master salesman AND Chapel Hill is a very special place!! Hey, maybe that gravel has a different appearance because it came/comes from the area of the TRIASSIC PLAIN????? It's kind of like largish rough, sand - grit.? Collier Cobb, Sr. more or less described Barbee Mt. and Strowd Hill being water front property a "few" years ago!! Bebe PS WHY IS SCHLEY NAMED SCHLEY.? There is even a county by that name in GA, as I recall.? Along time ago I knew who built the farmhouse the Phelps family bought from my Daddy's family, I think in the late 1940's. I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW!!!? Many happy days there. -----Original Message----- From: Jim Richmond <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, 6 Jan 2008 6:30 pm Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] [PHISH]Re: Fw: CHAPEL HILL SIDEWALK GRIT Bebe : I have never seen the stuff except in Chapel Hill. 1. Re: [NCDOGS] Fw: CHAPEL HILL SIDEWALK GRIT
    2. Bebe and John, Are you still interested in the Merritt family? I have done a small amount of research on the Merritt family due to a family connection. my Aunt, Margaret L. Barbee married M.B. Merritt. Marion Bascum Merritt was the son of Henry Carl Merrit and Rachel Eleanor Hobby. Henry and Rachel Merritt are buried at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. They had five children, Eleanor, M. B., Frances, Henry "Peck", Wm. Pleasants. The three boys are deceased now and I am not sure exactly where Frances and Eleanor are. At the time of Bill's death Frances was living in Swansboro and Eleanor was still in Richmond, VA. Henry Carl Merritt was the son of Marion Barbee Merritt. He was the youngest child of eight children. Marion Barbee Merritt and Mary Helen Riggsbee children were, Mary B., Ewell G., Wellington Barbee, Lillie D., Alice H., Minnie C., Mabel E. and Henry Carl. Marion Barbee Merritt's death certificate gives his parents as Pleasant Merritt and Betsie Mason. He died the 26 March 1926 and was buried in the Barbee Cemetery. The information on the DC was given by Wellington B. Merritt. My interest in this family started and M.B. who was my Uncle and a very special one to me. When I noticed the Barbee name appearing more and more, well I still do a little digging now and then. Linda B. H. grit come from??  What exactually is it??  To me it is as memorable as the rockwalls. Happy New Year To All!! Bebe Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] Fw: The Merritt family of Orange and Chatham Bebe, wasn't it a Merritt family that owned the Pines Restaurant out on 54 East? I seem to remember a Mrs. Merritt "suggesting" wines to go with meals out there. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Richard Ellington Sent: Friday, October 05, 2007 9:12 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NCDOGS] Fw: The Merritt family of Orange and Chatham Hey there, Bebe. Clarice and Virginia were Eben's daughters. They grew up on South Columbia Street, just across the street from Eben's filling station. Both were school teachers at Carrboro Elementary. Eben was just a good ole' redneck (like me). His idea of dressing up was a clean pair of overalls! His station was famous (or infamous) as the place for an underage college guy to get a cold beer. My Dad was a building contractor from the late 1940's until the late 1960's. He hired Eben to do a lot of his contract hauling and earthmoving. I know several good stories about Eben that are too long to include here. - Richard Bebe and John wrote: > Am interested in the whole Merritt family at this point so would > appreciate anything you will share with me.
