    1. Re: [NCDOGS] burials for Orange County Poor House?
    2. Jim Richmond
    3. The Orange County Home for the Poor was located at the intersection of what is now called The Efland-Cedar Grove Road and The Lebanon Church Road. The farm was located in the Southeast quadrant and the cemetery in the Northwest quadrant. Only a few of the graves are marked but now is a good time to see it because it was recently mowed. Some of the farm outbuildings are still standing. It is my understanding that deaths and burials at the county home were items on the county commissioners' minutes available in Raleigh at the Department of Archives. To visit the poor farm site, go to Efland. US 70 is its main street. Go on 70 West to the Presbyterian Church. Turn North on the Efland Cedar Grove Road. The Lebanon Church Road intersect about 3 miles North. 3. Richard, This exact same message was sent to me at Cemetery Census a day or so ago. I replied to Heidi with information that is available on the web site. I also asked Milton Forsyth to reply with any information he has. Milton has already replied to Heidi and given her some additional places to look for records. Here is Milton's reply: ------------------------------ The "Poor House Book" records cover the period 1842-1868 (1 Vol.) and the "Wardens of the Poor" records cover the period 1832-1879 (2 Vol). That does not mean these persons might not be mentioned in the many thousands of pages of other records that exist, but it is hard to think where one should look. If you want to look through these Poor House records they are on microfilm. There is a copy at the Orange County Library in Hillsborough, in the North Carolina Room. There is also a copy (and the originals) at the NC State Library and Archives in Raleigh. If they died while residing at the Poor House it is likely they were buried in the cemetery there. It is unfortunate the records aren't any better with regards to that cemetery. ------------------------------ The cemetery is listed at Cemetery Census as #083 - County Home [old] Burial Ground http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/orng/cem083.htm At 03:49 PM 03/13/08, you wrote: >Can anyone provide any assistance to this lady? 1. [NCDOGS] Urban hike in Durham this Saturday
    2. Richard Ellington
    3. I just got notice of this "happening" today from John Schelp of the Old West Durham Neighborhood Association (OWDNA). I think it looks like it should be a lot of fun. - Richard Urban hike: Watts Hospital, West Durham, East Campus, Ninth Street & beyond Saturday, April 12 at 9:00 AM Meet at West Club & 9th Street What's happening in Watts Hospital's old operating room today? What Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist went to EK Powe school? Was Duke Chapel really going to be built in Walltown? Why is Ninth Street called Ninth Street? Where did Madonna take early dance lessons? What song writer for Nora Jones (and Lou Rawls) was "born on a kitchen table" near Magnolia Grill? Come along and find out... 4-mile loop starts in Watts Hospital-Hillandale at corner of West Club & 9th Street, in front of the NC School of Science & Math. We'll start by walking down a hidden route, over to Walltown, along Markham Ave by Trinity Heights, past the Bassett Affair house on Buchanan. We'll then go down Watts Street, past Trinity Park park, and cross East Campus. We'll stroll up Ninth Street, past EK Powe, and see the South Ellerbe Creek Nature Area. We'll walk through an old mill village and check out a historic house ordered from a Sears & Roebuck catalogue. We'll continue into Watts Hospital-Hillandale up Oakland Ave to the West Ellerbe Trail in 17-acre Urban Nature Reserve, head over to Westover Park, and end where we started at Club & 9th. You'll see some nature and learn a little Durham history along the way. We might also get into current events in the Bull City. Local history lover John Schelp will narrate along the way. You don't have to register. The NC School of Science & Math is located on West Club Blvd, near Broad Street. Ample parking (for your bike or car) is available on nearby streets. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. After, lunch & drinks are available at several nearby restaurants on Broad St, near Club. Sponsored by the Sierra Club. 1. [NCDOGS] D-OGS Meeting Reminder, Wednesday, 5 March 2008, "Roots of Resistance -- A Story of the Underground Railroad"
    2. Paul Hollinghurst
    3. Wednesday, 5 March 2008 -- D-OGS Meeting TOPIC: "Roots of Resistance -- A Story of the Underground Railroad" PBS Video in The American Experience series. In the mid-1800s, black men and women traveled a network of escape routes known as the underground railroad. Over dark forest trails, back roads and rivers, they made their way along carefully mapped routes leading to night trains to the north or boats to the south. Their flight from the shackles of slavery in the south was organized by other escaped slaves and their allies. This program recounts the little-known story of black America's secret railroad to freedom through narratives of escaped slaves. Viewers listen to interviews with descendents of slaves and slaveholders describing personal danger and terrible risks involved in each slave's departure. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, even a successful flight to free territory didn't guarantee freedom from professional slave catchers who hunted down these men and women and returned them to a life of bondage on southern plantations. 2. Click here: Missouri Secretary of State: News Release I've just come across a remarkable project sponsored by the Secretary of State of Missouri. This is part of their announcement: "Jefferson City, Missouri — Secretary of State Robin Carnahan announced today that her office has placed online a five-part video series highlighting African-American genealogy. African-American Genealogy: Putting Together the Pieces of Your Past was created by the Missouri State Archives, a division of the Secretary of State's office." These videos can be viewed online by going here: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/about/presentations.asp I'm sure you'll enjoy watching some or all of the five-part series. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the state of North Carolina could do something similar? Our heritage is so important, and fascinating to all family historians. 1. [NCDOGS] Upcoming Irish Seminar in Bridgeport, Connecticut
    2. Richard Ellington
    3. This event is coming up on March 15. I did not get it into the March newsletter that has already been sent to press: Irish Americans looking for their roots will have an opportunity to learn how to trace their family trees back to Europe at a genealogy lecture scheduled to take place in Bridgeport on Saturday, March 15, 2008. The presentations by three noted researchers will take place at Housatonic Community College 900 Lafayette Blvd in Bridgeport starting at noon. Prof. Jonathan Shea, a foreign language professor at HCC, will lead off the sessions speaking about American sources needed to find information about the family on this side of the ocean, some of which will take the researcher back to the family’s place of origin in Ireland. Among the sources to be discussed are local birth, marriage and death records, probate files, church registers and similar documentation generated on a local level as well as information laden records of the federal government such as decennial census returns, WWI draft registrations and ships passenger lists from Ellis Island and other ports of entry. Shea, a New Britain native, traces his paternal roots to the counties of Offaly and Mayo in Ireland and has done on site research in the National Archives in Dublin, local county records offices and Catholic parish archives in his counties of origin. Stated Shea, "My family not only emigrated to the US but to the United Kingdom, Australia, Argentina and New Zealand so tracking down all the various branches of the family has taken me on a documentary journey to four continents." Resources in Ireland will be discussed by Janet Pestey of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists. Major records sources such as the nineteenth century Griffiths Valuation Lists and the surviving Irish census returns will be covered as well as information on national vital records indexes many of which are available at the Family History Center in Woodbridge and the resources to be found at Irish National Archives. Also included will be Civil Registration records which began in 1864, church records, tithe records estate records. Local sources and computer sites will also be discussed. The speaker is a retired educator and a frequent lecturer on the topic. The third in the trio of experts is Daniel Lynch of Trumbull. Lynch will concentrate on internet sources researchers can use from the comfort of their own home to hunt for ancestors. As more and more records are digitized and becoming available on home computers, this facet of genealogical research is among the fastest growing aspects of genealogy. a pastime of millions Americans. Lynch is a 22 year veteran of the computer industry and served as a consultant to the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and was featured on ABC News Good Morning America as part of their genealogy series. The author of numerous genealogy articles, Lynch is a frequent lecturer on genealogy and technology. The seminar is the result of a collaboration between Housatonic, The Connecticut Society of Genealogists, headquartered in East Hartford and the Connecticut Ancestry Society headquartered in Stamford. Free parking in the college's parking garage is available to all participants and all are welcome at the event. There is no charge to attend the lectures. The Irish program is the second of a series of genealogy lectures held at Housatonic. Last year's seminar on Polish and Eastern European research attracted a capacity crowd from all over the state as well as persons from neighboring states. To obtain an approximate head count of those planning to attend, would-be participants are asked to contact Prof. Shea at [email protected], Stephanie Hyland of The Connecticut Society of Genealogists [email protected], or Rob Locke of Connecticut Ancestry Society at [email protected] -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K. 3. Ginny, I am always on the look-out for relevant news items such as this. Several D-OGS members have been conscientious enough to send me items that they have seen. I really appreciate the cooperation that I have received. Hopefully, others will continue to share useful "nuggets" that may benefit other D-OGS members. Since we are spread around the country, there is no way of telling exactly who the news item might help with their family searches. - Richard Ginny wrote: > Thanks for putting this tidbit in the February Newsletter, Richard. 3. Thanks for putting this tidbit in the February Newsletter, Richard. I get Eastman's, but missed this information. I have ancestors who lived very early in Madison County, IL. I just never have had a chance to get to Edwardsville, IL although I have been in several of the nearby counties. This will be great! Ginny Durham, NC
