    1. [NCDOGS] Trading Path Association First Sunday Hike is this Sunday
    2. Richard Ellington
    3. I have been on a few of these walks and they are quite informative and entertaining as well as good exercise. I highly recommend the venture. I will not make this trek, however, because I will be in western NC this weekend. On April 6th we will hike along the remnants of a packhorse road atop Mount Tirzah in Person County, NC. This is, we believe, the course of the upper trading path, the high road, so to speak, of the original Petersburg trail. Packhorsemen crossed the Roanoke River north at Moniseep ford, in Brunswick County, VA and proceeded on virtually a straight line to Mount Tirzah, crossing the Tar River in its higher reaches, and crossing the east fork of the Neuse, the Flat River just above its forks. We will walk from the top of Mount Tirzah down to the ford over the North Fork of the Flat River. Mount Tirzah is a few miles east of Highway 501 at Timberlake, NC, north of Durham, south of Roxboro. We will meet and park at the little store just east of the intersection atop Mount Tirzah at 2 PM and we'll return to that point by 4 PM. Approach this site from Interstate 85 on Highway 501 north out of Durham At the stoplight in Timberlake, a few miles past the Flat River bridge, turn right and follow the road past the school and Methodist Church, past Brooks' Store, and on up Mount Tirzah. It is about three and a half miles up the hill and at the top you will pass an intersection and see immediately on your right will be the store where we'll park. The hike itself is mostly along unprepared and uneven surfaces. The terrain is slightly sloping and, with luck, the leaves will not yet have burst the buds and we'll be able to see quite a bit. Be prepared for insects though. Wear footwear appropriate to open woodland. Maps are found on the TPA website: http://www.tradingpath.org/index.php?option=com_events&task=view_detail&agid=67&year=2008&month=04&day=06&Itemid=29 -- Richard =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Richard K. 1. Re: [NCDOGS] Norton Internet Security 2008 Creates Problems WhenTryingto use ancestry.com
    2. Ava H. Nackman
    3. Margaret, Thanks, I appreciate your concern. My husband has a PhD in Computer Science and tons of experience in this area. Obviously, it is best to leave all aspects of your Security system operational. However, according to my husband, the possibility of having an issue when leaving just this part of the system off is remote. Phishing occurs when you are sent an email that you are asked to reply to and give personal information to, but the email is not from the source it claims to be and the address you are to send info to is not really the address it looks like it is going to. So, if you simply do not respond to emails like this unless you first CHECK to be sure that the request is legitimate, you are just fine. An example would be getting an email that appears to be from your bank and they ask you to send them your SS #. Well, you don't respond to emails like that. You call your bank and talk to them. As long as you are not really gullible and make it a rule to not send personal info by email, you have no problem. Microsoft Explorer also, according to my husband, has its own phishing security, so you are not left totally exposed anyway. In any case, Norton responded to us today and is actively working to fix this problem. They recommended that we do exactly what my husband already did in the meantime. I will pass your recommendations on security systems on to my husband. He did research various systems before buying the Norton and found the Norton to be very highly rated, but these glitches are pretty annoying. The most annoying aspect is that Norton has been fully aware of this problem for some time, but there is no helpful info on it on their website. Had there been, we would have been spared a couple of hours of work figuring out what was going on! It is an important part of your anti-virus and firewall protection. Please, please turn your Phishing protection back on immediately. I have had problems with Norton in the past. Norton is notorious for problems. It is an excellent product, but, there can be glitches. I changed my protection from Norton to another well known brand and that one worked fine until an update and then there were problems with that software. It turned out that it was a Microsoft problem and after several days of trying to find the reason for the problem, Microsoft finally was able to fix it. Since that time, I have gone to Microsoft's "Live One Care" Thus far, I have found it to be an excellent product, Microsoft manufactures it to work with their products and quite frankly, my computer has not run so well in a very long time. By turning off your Phishing component of Norton, you have left your computer open for some bad stuff to enter. So, please, please turn it back on. I hope this helps. 3. Hi All, Recently I upgraded my computer security software to Norton Internet Security 2008. Unfortunately, I discovered that this made it impossible for me to get to an original image of anything on Ancestry.com. It took my husband a while, but he figured out how to fix this: In Internet Explorer, go to the Tools Menu, then to Manage Add-Ons, then to Enable or Disable Add-Ons. There will be a list of add-ons, two of which will be Norton Add-Ons. For each of the Norton Add-Ons, select "Disable", click OK, and restart your browser. This turns off the phishing protection and the Norton status indicator will turn to a red X. If you would like to ignore the fact that the phishing checking is turned off, open Norton Internet Security (right click on the yellow Norton signal on the task bar)--> Open the Norton Protection Center --> click on Phishing protection and then click on "ignore". We have sent a complaint in to Norton (Please also do so yourself) and hopefully they will fix this and you can turn your phishing protection back on. Just thought this might be helpful to some of you, as an internet search made it clear that this is driving a lot of genealogists out there nuts! Ava Nackman

    1. [NCDOGS] Genealogists Press for Open Records
    2. The Association of Professional Genealogists has announced a press release to some of the professionals' lists, and it is of interest to all of us who try to do genealogical research and are blocked by a myriad of laws and constraints that make our work unnecessarily difficult. You may read about the subject in the press release on their web site. http://apgen.org/publications/press/ ID thieves rarely use public records This portion of the announcement sums up the likelihood of identity theft stemming from the most common methods. Even if you don't want to read the lengthy piece, this part is interesting. This is their announcement: "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Genealogists push for open records Formation of the Keeping Genealogical Records Open Workgroup (KGROW) WESTMINSTER, Colo., March 21 - The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) contends that there is no proof that open records significantly contribute to ID theft or terrorism. In a position paper that outlines the case for open public records, APG asserts that open records are rarely used by identification thieves and maintains that the benefit of open access to records far outweighs any potential abuse. APG has joined forces with other genealogical organizations including the National Genealogical Society (NGS), The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) in endorsing the position paper and calling on legislators to keep records open. "Public records allow genealogists and other professionals such as medical researchers, journalists, historians and academic researchers to do their jobs," explains APG President, Jake Gehring. He urges that "concerned citizens tell their representatives that they want to keep public records open." A group of professional genealogists within APG formed the Keeping Genealogical Records Open Workgroup (KGROW) in 2007 and prepared the position paper. Melinde Lutz Sanborn, FASG (Fellow, American Society of Genealogists) and member of the committee, says, "Open records and transparency in government are the best protections we have against twenty-first century fraud." The KGROW committee recommends in their paper that "lawmakers respond to the ID theft problem, not try to prevent a nonexistent problem." Further, they encourage "private companies and government improve their protection of personal data." The Case for Open Public Records position paper is available on the APG website at <http://apgen.org/publications/press> http://apgen.org/publications/press. The Association of Professional Genealogists is an independent organization whose worldwide members number over 1,800. The group's principal purpose is to support professional genealogists in all phases of their work: from the amateur genealogist wishing to turn knowledge and skill into a vocation, to the experienced professional seeking to exchange ideas with colleagues and to upgrade the profession as a whole.
