    1. [NCDOGS] D-OGS Meeting Tonight
    2. Just a reminder if you are planning to attend the yearly "show and tell" meeting tonight in which we all share our progress in our personal genealogy with the group, plan to bring along some comestible to share with everyone such as veggies, cookies, cheese & crackers and the like. D-OGS will do the rest. This is a good opportunity to get a bit more mileage out of data CDs, books, charts, and regional references that you no longer need but may suit someone else's needs. Bring them along and who knows, you may make someone's day. See you tonight. Carol **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. 1. [NCDOGS] D-OGS August Meeting et al...
    2. It's been brought to my attention that my recent note about the August meeting did not contain the time, date and place for the meeting, and that provides me with an opportunity to get in another mention of the usefulness of the D-OGS web site. Although our meetings are customarily held at 7:00 PM on the first Wednesday of the month at the Tobacco Museum/Duke Homestead in Durham, there are occasionally exceptions when a holiday intervenes, etc. To be sure you know the when and where of the meetings, visit the web site and read about the speaker and topic of the upcoming meeting in addition to any late-breaking changes. While you're there take a look around the page and see what you may have missed in the past. _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncdogs/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncdogs/) Carol "If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went." 1. [NCDOGS] D-OGS Meeting - August 2008
    2. The August meeting is the famous annual Show & Tell meeting that we always enjoy so much, so I hope everyone has put together their topic to discuss with us. I understand we will have a computer hookup and projector so there are several options to share your special genie experience for 2007-2008. If you can carry it in we will love to see it. I'll never forget the dresser drawer! The local D-OGS members may want to look around and see if they have some no longer used items that will aid someone else's genealogy efforts. Perhaps you have a packet of forms you got at the NGS conference a while back and used the ones you needed and now you have a bunch left over, or maybe a book about NC research, or some journals that you no longer need. Most of them are very useful even if they are last year's copies or older. What about those commercial CDs containing data that had only one mention of your family, and now you don't need them any longer? Someone else may be very happy to get their hands on them. We'll have a table to lay the things out on and plenty of time to pick and choose. Please bring something so everyone can benefit. This weekend will be a good time to survey your materials and create a space for something new you've had your eye on. While you're at it, plan to bring something to nibble on as D-OGS is providing the drinks to go along with the food. Cookies, crackers, nuts and what have you will do nicely. I hope to see you there. 1. [NCDOGS] Needlework Heirlooms
    2. One of the sites my Google trolls dug up for me recently pointed out once more how valuable a medium needlework can be in telling the family story and sustaining family ties and history. A Pennsylvania woman put her story into a quilt of magnificent quality and it will no doubt become a family heirloom for generations to come. Read about it here: _http://ydr.inyork.com/ci_10017131_ (http://ydr.inyork.com/ci_10017131) What needlework heirlooms survive in your old Orange County families? Do you have something special that dates two or four or more generations back? Whose names appear in connection with it, and where did you get it? How are you preserving it and where do intend it to go once you are no longer here to care for it? Perhaps you've moved far from the "goodliest land under the cope of heaven" and have taken along with you something that means home to you. Maybe you have received something in the mail that represents an inheritance from a favorite aunt who did needlework from childhood. I'd like to hear about some of your needlework and similar treasures that have found their way into your lives and hearts while preserving a bit of the past in Orange County. But be sure to look at the Baltimore album quilt even if you don't take time to read the entire article - it's worth it! Carol **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. 1. [NCDOGS] D-OGS CIG August Meeting - Cancelled
    2. Unfortunately, the Chapel Hill Library has no meeting room available for D-OGS CIG next month, so we will not be having an August meeting. That's the down side, the up side is that now you will have more time to send me articles, newslist and podcast examples, and URLs of interest to genealogists who use digital tools to enable and enhance their research to add to the agenda. Diversity of material is what makes the meetings so interesting and informative and there's a lot out there that one person (me) will never come across so I appreciate all the help I can get. One of our more successful topics ongoing is the advent of new tools available and the best prices out there for purchasing them. One recent success featured a 4GB flashdrive for a pittance that one of the attendees found perfectly suited to her needs, and she might not ever have learned about its availability had it not been for the CIG discussion of the topic. You never know when the topic that answers your specific questions will come up during the meeting, so send along your suggestions and URLs for the September meeting and come along to see what we have in store for you. 1. Re: [NCDOGS] D-OGS Meeting materials
    2. Richard Ellington
    3. To Dan, Doris and others: As much as we would like to be able to provide the program info to our members, we are constrained because most of our speakers are presenting their programs as little or no cost to our society. The presentations are the property of the presenter, not D-OGS. As much as we would like to videotape or record the programs for our distant members and posterity, we are really not allowed to do so without explicit permission of the speaker. We have asked many speakers to provide us with handouts or other such materials that we could make available to our members. Several presenters have done this and those materials are available on the bottom of the "members only" portion of our website at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncdogs/memberspage/. These materials are not necessarily complete transcripts of the program, but they will give you the gist of the program. Our recording secretaries have done a very good job of providing running notes of the programs in our meeting minutes. These minutes are published in our monthly newsletters. If web-based materials are available, we try to include that info also. I truly wish that we could do more to share with our distant members. Hopefully, those of you that are not local will let us know how we can help. Give us some specific ideas and we will see what we can do. We also hope that you will endeavor to share with us your own personal knowledge of Durham & Orange counties by providing some of your own personal research materials (queries, family histories, family trees, oral histories & traditions, etc.) for reprint in our journal and newsletter. As editor of the newsletter, I can assure you that I am ALWAYS looking for pertinent materials to include for all to see. I know the same is true for the journal editors, Cathy & Rob Elias. Many genealogical & historical societies are dropping by the wayside. Many of the ones that remain no longer have ANY regular publications for their members. We can continue to have a newsletter & journal only with the continued cooperation of ALL our members. - Richard Doris Saunders wrote: > Thanks Dan for asking for meeting info to be provided for those members (me included) who live too far away to attend.
